I read on the Seymour Duncan Forum that you can take a pickup aparts and slide the magnet out and put it into another pickup to get a different sound and characteristic from that pickup.
I would like to know more about this, and if anyone has done it, could you please share how it's done, and what are some good suggestions to use as my base.
For ex: An Alnico magnet into a pup with more windings (A pup that was originally described as a "hot" pickup", like a JB or something...)
Another ex: A Ceramic magnet into a pup with less windings. (Like a PAF or something similar)
Is it recommended that I re pot or wax the pups after the change? What are some things to look out for?
I heard of this being done, but didn't realize it was so simple to accomplish. (atleast it appears to be...)
Thanks alot!

Or any links or tutorial on this subject would be very cool as well.

Here's what I got so far:
I have 2 humbuckers here, both no name.
Humbucker #1 is a Black regular spaced w/ 1 height screw on one side and 2 on the other, similar to a Schaller pup if you know what I mean by that.
Humbucker #2 is White and it's an F spaced pup, but one of the legs for the height screw was broken off, so it is useless as far as mounting it goes.
Well, I took the bottom off of each pickup by removing the 4 screws that hold the baseplate onto the pickup bobbins.
Then I removed the magnets from #1 (black pup), they are much bigger and stronger.
I took the magnets from #2 (white pup), they were thin and weak.
Being I mostly use Floyds, I figured that I'd take the Magnet from #1, and the bottom plate and put onto #2 and make one usable pickup out of both of them.
I forgot to tak esome photos of them before I took them apart, so bear with me here.
Here's some pictures:
The baseplate of the white one as you can see has a broken leg, and the one from the black one is pictured right beside it, and that's the one i'm going to use.
Also pictured are the poles that I took out of the black pup

Underneath both pickups, there's a magnet that runs along the poles on the outer edge of the pickup, and one wider magnet between the poles located in the middle of the pickup.
Here's the difference in thickness between the outer magnet of the white (thin magnet) and the black pup (thicker magnet.)

Here's the magnet that runs up the middle of the pickups. Again, note the difference in thickness:

Here's a shot of the difference in the pole height.
The shorter pole is from the white pup, which also have the thinner magnets. I needed to use the long poles because they run along side the thicker magnets, and use up more of the magnet area, and the magnet's pull.

Here's another shot to help explain that better:
This is the white pup with the thicker magnet installed and the longer pole on the right and the original short pole on the left:

Another shot of the baseplate:

This is all i got done so far, i'll let you know more as I go further with this.
I can't find my multimeter, which sucks cause i wanted to measure the before and after of this mod.
I just hope it sounds half way decent...
I might use allen head poles in these cause i have a bunch of different size and lengths of allen bolts.
And yes Jeff, I am bored as all hell man!!
