Do you enjoy talent in genres other than your favorite ?

I enjoy many genres. I am not (but wished I was) a jazz drummer. But I love to hear a good jazz band. I used to love some of the Big Bands that the Policeman's Ball used to bring in.

I like to hear a good metal band, but I have no interest in playing metal. I could go on...

Do you seek out and enjoy bands that play material OTHER than your favorite genre ? Who / what do you like that's outside of your favorite genre ?

totally hawk, i'm gonna be honest and say that i severely dislike jazz. But to just watch a good jazz drummer it absolutely amazing to me...extreme syncopation and amazing control...it's awesome!

Yeah, I like Trash Metal, but I also like Death Metal too.

No, about the only other style beside Metal that I can honestly say that I enjoy and have a love for is Classic Rock.

My cd collection consists of:
*Classic Rock: Kansas, Jethro Tull, The Doors, Cream, Rush, etc..

*70's Metal: Sabbath, Priest, Deep Purple,Alice Cooper, Rainbow, etc...

*NWOBHM: Maiden,Scorpions, Mercyful Fate, King Diamond,etc...

*Glam Metal: Van Halen,Dokken,Ratt, BonJovi, etc....

*Classic Metal: Ozzy, Black Sabbath (w/Dio), Dio, Pantera, Motley Crue,Skid Row,etc...

*Thrash Metal: Sepultura,Exodus, Sabbat, Testament, Nuclear Assault, Metallica, Megadeth etc...

*Death Metal: Deicide,Six Feet Under,Obituary,Death,Morbid Angel,Cannibal Corpse,etc...

*Power Metal: Primal Fear, Hammerfall, Gamma Ray, Sinner,Seven Witches, etc...

*Speed Metal: Slayer

*Doom Metal: Solitude Aeturnus, Candlemass, Cathedral, Concept of God,etc.

So, for me pretty much as long as it has good guitar in it, I'm all ears. Other than that it takes alot for me to really give anything a chance

I enjoy many genres of music and have a vast music collection. Even if I am not a fan of a particular style of music, I can appreciate the talent it takes to perform it when I hear somebody who can play it well.

I like to think I can appreciate someone's talent even if I can't stand their music. Case in point:Fiona Apple. Don't like her as a person but recognize the level of talent she has. The list goes on...

Folk-Arlo/Woodie Guthry, LeadBelly, Joan Baez, John Denver, Bob Dylan

Punk Rock and All Types of Metal are my faves of course, but I can even dig a little hip hop now and then. I HATE HATE HATE pop music though.

Shit has no soul whatsoever. I only like a little jazz, but my 3 week old daughter already loves Miles Davis. I have no clue where she gets it.

I used to like jazz but I'm pretty tired of it now. It sounds too much the same to me... melody, solo, solo, solo, solo, solo, solo, solo, solo, solo, solo, solo, solo, solo, solo, melody.

I love pretty much any Maynard Ferguson though!

Barbershop Quartet

I'm a rock/metal player to the bone, but I have a real fascination and love of Chinese & Japanese music, especially the Japanese Koto instrument. I guess when you really look at one, it's like a Japanese lap steel...something with strings!!! They have a very haunting sound that's oddly soothing. As much as I love my genre, there are times when I've had enough and I have to escape to the extreme opposite just to maintain my "musical sanity."

I saw him in Vegas at the Hilton. He puts on a great show. He's features the musicians and BG vocals alot and gives them credit.

I like Jazz too. But only when it's live. At heart I'm a Classic Rocker. Did you ever go down town and listen to The Randy Jackson Band ? (Randy Rutherford, Dave Villanti, Bobby Scholls, and Lee Appleman. These 4 guys are amazing. But I like alot of different genre's. I guess my favorite guitar player was and still is Frank Zappa. Not into hard metal. Do like Hammerfall. Great guitar work. Grew up listening to country and now I can't stand to listen to it. But I do love good roudy Blue Grass.

I like about every style (Most 80s Hair, bad "Pop" and new "Country"...which is
really just bad pop with a pseudo twang in the voice, a steel guitar, and violin...not
so much).

But, regardless, I can certainly appreciate the ability of the people creating it. I can't
think of anything I've heard from Christina....what's 'her name....Aguilera (All I could
think of was "Applegate") that I thought was good song-wise, but she absolutely has
an amazing voice and unbelievable talent.

Frenetic, free-from experimental Jazz, like John Zorn, eh, depends. But, the guys
playing are certainly talented.

Can take about 5 seconds of Yngwie, DiMeola, etc. little arpeggio exercises, but can
certainly appreciate their ability and the practice time they put in.

I LOVE old Standards and such. If I'm listening to something at home, it'll either
be Etta James, Steve Tyrell (Producer who did my favourite versions of a lot of
legendary tunes), or Aimee Mann (Amazing songwriter), or, if I can dig it up,
KD Lang's album "Ingenue". None of which are exactly styles I play out, at least
at the moment, but the songwriting, lyrics, emotion they convey....incredible.

So, ya, certainly do appreciate the people making the music I don't necessarily care
for. Oh...and...Fiona Apple is HOT!

The day I start listening to one genre of music is the day that I should just give up on music completely. Both playing and listening to other genres of music is only going to make you a better musician in the long run.

One of old sKool's friends was out at our gig on Saturday. Dude's an incredibly gifted guitarist and could probably shred Yngwie under the table (and his gearhead-ness would make Joe, Kenny, Jason, Chad, and I look like plug-n-play people. I finally got to see a photo of his 20 space guitar rack.

). He's currently playing country and was telling me how much of a challenge it is, which is something I've been saying for years. A lot of people for some reason or another turn their noses up at the genre, but I guarantee that it will kick your ass if you actually try to perform it and perform it well. There's always something new to learn in every musical situation that you will find yourself in.

At a very early age my mom would bring home every Beatles 45 that came out. My brother still has them! But, I also remember the song "Dominique" by the singing nun, "The Ballad of the Green Berets" by Sgt Barry Sadler?", Buck Owens, Jim Reeves, Bing Crosby, Herb Alpert, Burt Bacharach, Myron Floren, and many other sounds being played when I was knee high to a bottle of jack daniels. I have stuff from Oscar Peterson, Charlie Byrd, Zappa, Yes, Genesis, It's a Beautiful Day, INXS, and hundreds of others. And as a result of all of that, I am and always will be one really fuckin' confused guitar player

You see, what makes this subject particularly difficult is everyones definition of a genre. Personally, I think that music (rock music in particular) has far too many genre labels as it is. In fact, the king of ridiculous in this case is the metal genre with more variety descriptions than heinz has pickles! It isn't good, and quite frankly I really have to laugh at the people who made up all the silly names for heavy metal to begin with!

I am normally a fan of pop/rock music. By my definition, this is rock music that is popular on mainstream rock radio. But I really get into moods where I'm listening to a lot of ska and reggae music. I just love it...it's different.
