Guitar Hero / Rockband

Post by Colton »

Here you go guys, bitch and complain. Just please keep it outta the ad sections.

Personally, I dont mind guitar hero. I've seen alot of people who would have never touched a guitar in the first place finding interest in them now that theyve gotten some simple motor skills down by playing guitar hero.

"ZOMG LRN 2 PLAY REEL GITAR NOT DUM GAME UR RUINING REEL MUZISHINS N TAKIN OWR GIGS"
It's a damn game. Probably just a fad thats gonna eventually get worn out. Go bitch at the people who have bingo nights too then, we could be gigging instead of these assholes playing their games, right? Bingo is ruining the band scene.

God I hope you people can sense e-sarcasm....

On another note, DJ's can just as easily take a bands place at a bar. Most of the time its not people saying "I like DJ's better" or "Guitar hero would be soo much cooler than live music", most of the time it comes down to the money. If a bar isnt bringing in any business booking bands and decides to have a guitar hero night, its probably because the band thing isnt working. So what if its a DJ or a video game. Im terrible at wording this, but I dont see guitar hero replacing bands at ANY venue that normally gets good live music turnouts.
Laugh if you want to, really is kinda funny, 'cause the world is a car and you're the crash test dummy.

If bands are losing gigs to Guitar Hero wack-fests, then they probably weren't that good to begin with.

But I do agree with ya on all accounts Colton.

My son brings his 1 Guitar into the living room a couple of weeks ago, says, "listen to this" and with a HUGE smile proceeds to play "Iron Man".
I asked him if he knew what song that was and he said yep, "Iron Man", and that he had first played it on Guitar Hero. So, in my estimation it can't be all that bad. :D

Guitar Hero rox. My kids have been introduced to a lot of cool music that otherwise would be lost on them, ala Iron Man. Plus, it's fun.

I admire it only for Rob's point...it introduces kids to music that would have otherwise been long gone and left for dead.

On the other side of the coin, the hours they spend on this thing could be spent toward playing a REAL instrument. For that, I hate it.

When I gave lessons, I had several young kids come and go thru the door because they were proud they could play this or that on Guitar Hero then when they found it wasn't quite so easy to learn to play guitar, they bailed on it. They wanted to be able to learn "Through The Fire And Flames" as fast as they did on GH, and it just didn't work like that. The word "weeks" scared them..."months" terrified them, and "years" caused some to mentally break down.

So my feelings are mixed on Guitar Hero.

I think its ok as a game. period!

As long as the kids remember its just that. I heard they are working on a game you plug a real guitar in and it teaches you to play.."THAT WILL SELL!!" They already have and actual drum set (not the game version ones) but an electronic that plays without the game. Another plus!!..Kids just need to remember the cut off point of where it goes from a game to real music being made...

I like the idea it's bringing old music back for the kids because that's our future bar crowd!!!...LOL

I was just in Las Vegas for a seminar for work. I got to meet some really great people from all over the country. More than once I was part of a Rock Band conversation. There were comments that it was opening young kids minds up to appreciation of classic rock and how cool it is to be a real musician. I agreed that these were wonderful things. But I also interjected that the problem was that Rock Band does not teach real chord structure and it also doesn't hurt to learn how to play. Everyone I said this to was confused. They didn't understand that learning to play guitar or bass hurts - the callous development, the hand cramps - at least until your dexterity develops. And being married to a drummer I know the aches and pains he's had over the years, not to mention carrying that set (trap case!) all over creation. I pointed out that Rock Band only plays on the glory of being in a band not the essential part - earning it!
But, alas, that seems to be a problem these days with a lot of things...

I respect your right to like and play anything you want. It's a free country. It's just when I see an ad to start a Rock Band Band I think "Whoa - what's next" - just like I did when no one seemed to care about lip-synching or bimbos without talent in bands. Just sayin'...

"My kid is obsessed with Guitar Hero, and we thought we'd try him on a real guitar."
I hear that A LOT now at the music store. I was dragged into the Guitar Hero era kicking and screaming, believe you me... why play a toy, when the real thing is right there, and kids can do it? Then, I started hearing about how it's getting kids interested in playing, and I reluctantly admitted it's significance. I read just today that 2.5 million kids in the U.K. started instruments because of GH and RB.
Obviously, not every kid who makes the jump from game to instrument will stick with it, but that's true of all kids who start an instrument. I've always felt that the kids who drop music were supposed to. If you can't commit to music, you should just stay a listener, as it opens the playing field for the rest of us. Those folks should be relegated to being a listener, as opposed to a creator. (I do think everyone should TRY, however.)
Guitar Hero will be replaced by next year's product, and become a historical footnote, but if it puts an instrument in a kid's hands for a few minutes, I'm okay with it. You wouldn't want a kid stealing cars after playing GTA, but as musicians, you all should use the game to encourage youngsters to move into music, because music is good for them.--->JMS

I'm glad Guitar hero/Rockband has a lot of kids thinking about and trying the actual making of music. I'm also glad that those same kids aren't going out to live "Grand Theft Auto" in the real world!

Game

Post by tornandfrayed »

Guitar hero is a game. Do you realize how many gamers there are out there? The truth of the matter is that learning an instrument and putting the time into takes a different type of commitment level then learning to play Guitar hero.

I do not think that many people will gravitate from video games to playing guitar. I do believe that people who want to learn an instrument will learn in regardless of the state of Rock Band II, Guitar Hero World Tour or Wii Music.

So I guess that it is good cause maybe someone will pick up an instrument who might not have if they had not been exposed to GH...

And R, yes it is good that people do not use this same analogy with GTA 5...

We would be in a world of hurt.....

Not that we aren't already....

Songsmith's comments make a strong point. If a kid starts on GH or RB and if it really fuels his interest for a real instrument and he pursues and succeeds at it, I think that's sensational. It pointed them in the direction they were supposed to go. Not ALL my students who were GH players dropped out - all apologies if that's the way I made it seem. But he's right... if they drop out, perhaps they were never meant for it.

My niece dabbles in the guitar, and she's also a GH fanatic. Sorry to say her skills at GH far exceed her skills at the real thing. I jokingly ream her for it when I see her, and she openly admits she could practice more. "But it's so much harder", she says.

And for the record (and all it's worth) I have GH & GHIII on my cell phone. I play while waiting to get loaded (I drive a dump truck). It's in no way hindered me from my real passion, which I devote to every evening and on the weekends without fail. I know fantasy from reality. And I actually enjoy playing it when I'm away from my guitar. Granted there's only three buttons to push, but I like jamming on the tunes anyway.

If Guitar Hero and Rock Band are your thing, then awesome! Personally, I tried Guitar Hero once and it wasn't my bag. I found that the rythmnic structure of the game did not always mesh with what the rythmnic structure was of the actual song. When you actually know how to play and "feel" music, it can be real difficult. Maybe it could help with internalizing polyrythmns. I don't know. :?

But most of us can agree that DJs are evil and that kareoke is at least annoying as fuck. If we're worrying about losing gigs to Guitar Hero, then I think it's time to take a look in the mirror. It's like the La Grenouille being worried about losing marketshare in the restaurant industry because McDonald's exists.

However, I do agree with Trace and Buck. Learning to play music takes time and dedication. There's only one way to be good at it, and that's the hard way. Some people are scared to pay them there dues...and I'm speaking about more things than music. Guitar Hero and Rock Band will go the way of the digi-pet and pogs. Real musicians will continue to plug away.

Most definitely!

P.S. Guitar Hero is lame. Sure it may spark interest in music
but I'm so tired of hearing, "I can play........on expert with 95%
accuracy." Plus it makes dumb kids talk about Dragonforce.
I hate Dragonforce. Probably one of the most over rated bands
ever........besides The Beatles.

We have more than enough shows. I cant believe this has been going on for the last four days. So i said something stupid big deal. Get the hell over it. I'm a big enough person to say sorrry. I had no intention to say anything bad about Alfred. In fact to keep the Peace! I'm asking him to attend our 12-13-08 show At the grove and do a song with us . Hell Im willing to Show for your Gutiar Hero Gig if you do. You have my word. What a lot of you dont know is the back story of my feelings on the issue. I Love Music. The abilty to play is someting I take to heart. The problem is that there are not a lot of places that promote live music. Jp and rockpage have given us a gift to promote music. When i read his post i was upset due to the fact that i felt as if a line was crossed in regards to this. I trully was and in my own way sticking up for what i thought the true spirt of this page was. For my trouble Ive been made fun of, My musical abilty put into question. and really taken a lot of shit. So many of you made very good points about this issue. It's cool to see this page come together. So Alfred the balls in your court.
