Wake up and smell the roses

In reply to the Betty Sheetz fracas….
To the youth in Altoona that always BITCH (WE HAVE NOTHING TO DO )
Well guess what my friends, you guys just blew a huge opportunity for yourselves….

The security at this event must have been few to none to let a couple of kids from Clearfield cause a problem like this, there is No Excuse…
If they were causing problems throw their ass out no matter if their band is playing or not. "Their not God" or even close. Wait your damn turn like everyone else…
It’s a damn shame that now Altoona’s youth is going to suffer from this, don’t think so
See if theirs another event like this one at the Sheetz Building again or anyplace else.
Promoters and club owners are going to shy away from this like flies from fly spray.
And if Classic Attitudes are not careful and nip trouble quickly when it starts,
The news Again will have a field day with it. No Positive aspects of music and youth.
Just The Shit Hit The Fan Again in Altoona
IS THIS WHAT YOU GUYS WANT!!!! NOT A DAMN THING TO DO!!!!
Wise up Altoona youth before you have nothing at all to do…
Don’t ruin it for the others…

With Constant Rumbles with road crews occurring like the one in Latrobe
no one needs to keep up with the Jones, Enough is enough …
Help get your younger brother or sister, nephews, nieces, cousins etc…
Get them to look up to you, Be a Role Model…
Keep Music Alive
Do Not Let It Die or Fade
Give the kids an instrument and let their minds explore!

In a way I am, that after people work very hard to get events up and started for the youth of the area and it only takes a select few to screw it up, and of course the media is always their.
When you ask the media to come to a event to show the community
how music can benefit the youth and health benefits their no where to be found.....
and to Dear mikers85,

I could very well "Go Their" with you, but I'm not
I'll let it speak for it self next time you might want a gig at becky sheetz building or try to get a gig at a place that use to have youth bands or anywhere else...Do you think that this is going to go unoticed by the club owners ?
The Club owners are very cautious now
not even to mention orgs. that might have considered youth nite dances..

Good luck Mike and your band The Syrins
Your Going to Need It Mate !
I hope it don't come to what it might be for your and all the young bands
in Altoona..With the things that have already happened ...
All I ask is to police yourself and your friends as well...
thanks guys...

My Opinion

Post by getclosertothemusic »

Go to the post below this one to Becky Sheetz Building Fracas
and read threw the post by J.P. and other post.
Theres more to the story than whats there but it will give you an idea
thanks esa for reading the posts on rockpage...

Also to Mikers85 No offense taken, just wanted to make a point with others as well
Like I said Good Luck with your band Mike I hope this mess gets all
worked out with things that have happened at the sheetz building and in the Altoona area.
Get Closer To The Music wants to keep youth involved in music and in youth groups and bands.
Some may say this was a bad post for this organization, but not everyone knows all the facts not even myself for that matter but, when events get started late and have another band (not of our area) start pulling plugs out of the wall to get the playing band off the stage and so on with the next band thats enough !!!
We will continue to encourage the youth in our area and we're here to stay....This was my personal opinion on this thing...
And to Mike if you or your friends need anything or any other youth in the area that reads this post have so sort of music needs get us an e-mail and we will put our heads together and try our best to see what we can come up with and be glad to help ...

Again I will defend my friends here, quit blaming the "out of the area" band if you don't know the facts! (read Becky Sheetz Building Fracus Thread).

You admitted to not knowing the facts, but continue to blame the other band and that's not fair and not what happened. As I said before, these guys are great guys who never create any type of problems at their shows, and don't deserve to be blamed for a poorly coordinated event with little to no security or adults on the premises.

For being someone who claims to be trying to help the youth and music in general, you sure are quick to cast the blame on the out of town band when you don't even know what really happened. That is poor judgement on your behalf and doesn't make whatever it is your organization does seem very credible.

Although I wasn't there, this situation sounds more like a security issue, and the responsibility most likely rests with the show organizer or even the Becky Sheetz folks for not being more careful about who they rented out their facility to. (Didn't the Sheetz folks have a policy that people staging shows there had to hire two security folks?)

In any case, the time for finger-pointing has passed. The damage has been done. Now, what does our music scene do to try to resolve the problems created by this mess? Specifically, where do young people go to stage and see shows?

One suggestion I offer - if Big John and his staff would be up for it - might be a return of all ages shows at Peter C's, perhaps on a limited basis (once a month or once every two months). In the year that Peter C's staged all ages shows before all the PLCB chaperone crap went down, I saw very few, if any, incidents - and when a moshpit showed any signs of getting out of control, Peter C's security was quickly on it and nipped it in the bud. The security was there, and these shows were monitored.

I know the chaperone issue would need to be dealt with - perhaps with shows only happening once every month or two, more effort could be made to get parents or other concerned adults to be present as chaperones (if these shows would happen on Tuesdays, for example, I myself could probably be at most of them, as Tuesday is usually a light night for me at work and I could be available). Also, with school soon back in session, attendance at these shows during the school year would likely be lighter, and less chaperones would be needed.

Again, Big John has the final word on this, and I offer it only as a suggestion. Perhaps also, in time after the furor over the Becky Sheetz fracas dies down, an organized effort could be made to approach local halls about staging all ages shows again, with an organized game plan that involves having security there to see that things don't get out of hand. I would think that if bands like The Syrins or Sound Driven (whose music is not conducive to moshing or aggressive dancing) could organize an effort to approach local halls and convince them that their shows are not violent, it might reopen some doors down the road.

AMEN JP!!! blame, blame, blame...blah, blah, blah...IT'S FUKKIN OVER!!!! the damage is done & we need to focus on shaping up the all age scene instead of dwelling. jp has a good suggestion...last i heard, which was at a BCC meeting Big John attended a while back, john was willing to do all age shows but not as often as before, not every week. i'm sure we'll need to touch base with him but it was cool then.
does anybody remember the "crimewatch block party" on lexington ave. back around '91 or '92??? if anyone does then you know...we rebounded from that riot ( yes a real riot...cops, girls on top of cars fighting, beer bottles flying thru the air, underagers scattering everywhere, people getting trampled, and so on) so we can come back from this too.

Two other ideas/suggestions that crossed my mind:

1) Perhaps touch base with the folks at the Altoona Hospital Partnership for a Healthy Community - the folks who organize the annual "Teen Fest" - and see if they might be interested in sponsoring a few more "Teen Fest"-like events through the course of the year, perhaps seasonally (one in fall, one in winter, one in spring, and the big outdoor one in summer). The "Teen Fest" events always have ample chaperones and security, and strongly promote the motto of "No drugs, no alcohol, no violence." It might be an avenue to pursue, and local community centers and halls might be more open to all ages shows if the Partnership is behind them.

2) Provided a venue could be secured to stage such an event, how about an all ages benefit show for the Becky Sheetz Building, and more specifically, the organization that operates the building, the Association of Retarded Citizens (ARC) of Blair County? If the young area bands and youth could organize it, monies raised from the show could go towards compensating the ARC folks for the damage done to the Sheetz building, with leftover monies helping the programs of the ARC. It would be a good fence-mending gesture towards the ARC folks, and would let them know that not all the kids in our area condone what happened; it would also be a way for the all ages scene to show accountability for what their peers did.

And also - if all ages shows are ever again able to be staged at the Sheetz Building, use a show or two a year to kick back monies towards the ARC. It would help justify having the shows there, and make the ARC folks more forgiving in the event anything else like this recent fracas would happen again.

My last post on this issue

Post by getclosertothemusic »

Now that I got peoples attention.....This is my last post on this matter....
The finger pointing is through! Like rug has mentioned in his post.
Lets get up and do something to make better events for the youth lets have bigger and better events, keep the youth involved...
J.P. Has hit the nail on the head once again....
I said from the very first post "were was the security?" at the sheetz building???I was more upset at them than anyone else to let things get out of hand....
J.P. has great ideas for youth staging and shows.....
If Big John agrees, Rockpagers support it completly, he does have very good security.
If the Altoona Hospital Partnership for a Healthy Community - the folks who organize the annual "Teen Fest would like to get something up and running "awesome" and to have it back at the Sheetz building to mend
broken bridges and help support (ARC) in Blair County like J.P. has mentioned "outstanding".
I'm all for it and I know when teens start talking to other teens it wouldn't
take a whole lot for them to organize any events....
Just don't forget the security ok guys....
God Bless You All, this has been a learning experience for myself
Thank you all, Ed

Dear Fellow Musicians and Organizers,

My friend directed me to this page after seeing mention of Sound Driven, my band of about 6 or 7 years now. I'm living in Pittsburgh right now playing jazz piano and studying composition (and the others all on their respective endeavors), so Sound Driven is lucky if we get a few shows in a year. We have always geared our shows toward the all-age crowd because as many have said in this forum, there really is next to nothing for the youth of the area. We've had no hinderance forking over large amounts of money to rent out Becky Sheetz Hall ($250 for a night I believe, plus security), packing the place, and barely breaking even. We created the desired atmosphere and got our music out and and that was the point. We have helped and been helped by bands such as The Syrins, Electric Blue, and Choco Sam to do the same thing over and over again.

But life would be pretty boring if only one type of music existed. Though I don't really have a big appreciation for punk and hardcore, one cannot discount it as a valid artform. And it has a pretty large following around here. The way I see it, the violent nature of the music itself causes its fans to get caught up in the emotional release of the moment, hence the popularity of the mosh pit. Similarly, when a band such as ourselves strikes the right vibe with the audience, it is not uncommon to see some pretty crazy dancing.

So this is what I suggest: the owner of any place considering hosting an all-age event establish right from the beginning its expectations from the band. No moshing means no moshing. If an owner told me, "You can play here, but no dancing," I wouldn't take my band there. I don't like to be discriminatory toward the heavier bands in the area, but liability is a huge problem when dealing with such agressiveness. The truth is, I know people that played at Becky Sheetz that night and they are not violent or aggressive people. And if a venue (bar or not) is willing to take the risk of having a band with a potential mosh pit, realize that security is a top priority and even at that mishaps will happen. This most likely is not be the fault of the band, and it is definitely not the fault of the youth music scene as a whole, but rather the fault of few morons who cross the line between "release" and "riot."
