classical (Beethoven, Mozart, Chopin), folk music (Dylan, Croce), some small amount of country...mostly older country, a very small amount of rap/hip-hop (Tupac, Fugees, again...older stuff), ambient stuff, celtic music and music from other parts of the world, a la middle eastern, indian, polka once in a while, I'll listen to some jazz but don't know much about it....hmm....this is hard because I'll listen to almost anything if I there is either an element about it that I enjoy or I respect the artistic output of the genre/song.

I listen to public radio for my classical fix. Also on Sundays they run the folk show followed by the irish show "Thistle and Shamrock".

I listen to some jazz, like Jimmy Smith, Branford Marsalis, The Jeff Hamilton Trio, Cindy Blackman's "Code Red" album, Pat Metheny, Wayne Shorter, Sonny Rollins, Miles Davis, Return To Forever, Billy Cobham's solo stuff, the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, and a TON of funk, like Tower Of Power, KC & The Sunshine Band, P-Funk, Candy Dulfer, Rick Latham & The Groove Doctors, Robert Randolph, Mother's Finest, Ohio Players, Confunkshun, old Cameo, Zapp, Dazz Band, and Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings.

Interesting to see what everyone branches out on, but I must say its weird that people call some of this stuff NOT rock, NOT blues, etc... I think a lot of it is. So much music blurs the lines, crosses over. Funny and insightful quote by Neil Young at a show, someone kept yelling for a certain song and he said in a befuddeled way, 'hey man, its all the same song' and it is....

A lot of jazz fusion stuff like Santana (esp. Oneness, Welcome, Caravanseri and anything he did with John McLaughlin), Mclaughlin, Gov't Mule, the Allman Brothers Band.

3 GREAT cds that are somewhat unknown are:

Gov't Mule---Live At the Roseland Ballroom, hard driven blues/jazz fusion.

Les McCann and Eddie Harris---Swiss Movement, 2 jazz guys met one night and jammed the next at the Montreaux Jazz Festival. So cool and hard edged for jazz.

Steve Lukather and Larry Carlton---No Substitutions, recorded live without any rehearsals, produced by Stevie Vai. Put this one in your cd player, You won't be able to take it out.

I forgot to mention one of my favs that on a regular rotation:

Preshrunk. They're a 3-piece I think out of Europe. It sounds like techno/electronica, but it's actually a drummer and two dude on basses. You gotta check these guys out, bassists. They use a ton of effects, but it's very tastefully done.

I started painting houses and offices with a friend of mine, we listen to bluegrass and oldtime mostly, I'm learning a lot. Today it was Dylan and David Grisman, Foghorn Stringband, and The Meters (old school New Orleans funk). Listening to music makes painting a room reasonably tolerable!
At the Emporium, we have Tower Of Power, Kings X, Jimmy Buffett, and Misha Mansoor, whom I found on the internet. Pretty well rounded, I'd say.

totally cool. i read your post, and immediately checked them out on youtube... some amazing stuff going on there. something every bass player should listen to.
