Already...
Obama wants us to NOT drill in Utah for oil and natural gas! Woohoo! I guess we can start to throw energy independence out the window.

Already...
Alternative energy is the ONLY way to stop our need for foreign oil, and many will NEVER understand that.
I read and have heard (c'mon, you have too!):
1. We produce only 10% of the world's petroleum, yet use 24%. (Jimi,
GREAT link to the D.O.E.!)
2. Companies already own or are leasing thousands of acres of American land they could be using for oil and natural gas, but are not.
To my thinking there is NO sense in saying MORE drilling here is going alleviate a thing, other than energy companies shifting blame when co$t$ $hoot up and then say that happened because they cannot drill due to "Nutty Conservationists and Environmentalists."
Of course, one has to use their OWN reasoning to reach the same conclusion I have.

It never fails to make me laugh when people talk about getting more fossil fuels out of the Earth as if that's going to make things better. Folks...fossil fuels are not limitless. We are going to run out eventually, and from what I've read, it's going to be a lot sooner than many people seem to think. The only way to avoid a major energy crisis is by investing in renewable, clean energy sources.

It's not perfect, but the people at MDI are proving it can be done. And this is just one example. We've got the technology to get energy from the wind and sunlight. I've seen viable engines that can run on WATER. Drilling more oil out of the ground is just wasting time, effort and money prolonging the inevitable end of fossil fuel use.
But, of course, the Big Oil fatcats don't want us to use alternative energy sources. They'd rather keep the great money machine turning and keep raping us at the gas pump rather than do what's best for everyone. But their days are numbered, ladies and gentlemen. We WILL run out someday, and frankly, I'm looking forward to it...

We need to find other fuel options. I do not like giving countries billions and then watching them stab us in the back. The more we can do for ourselves, the stronger we become and more independent. I long for the day when we can tell other countries that we don't need/nor want what they have.
Music Rocks!
I am all for solar, hydro and more nuclear energy, but we still need a few more years with oil and coal. Nobama want to bankrupt the coal industry. With coal powering 49% of America's electricity, look for your electric bill to skyrocket in the near future.
He wants no new domestic drilling, so we will continue to be held hostage by Mid East countries for at least the next 10 years IMHO.
He wants no new nuclear power plants, even though we have not built one since the 70's. No help here.
Troubling times in the energy area until new technologies become affordable, but we have HOPE and CHANGE....

Rob, you do understand that the oil will belong to the oil companies, not us. And it will added to the world market. It will not be strictly for US consumption with the price of gas dropping the day they begin sucking it out.RobTheDrummer wrote:We need to drill now, while we find alternate resources. We need to get off the middle eastern teet right now, and be off of it for good.
Actually, we need to get off the North American teat too. Two of the top three sources of oil for the US are non-OPEC Canada and non-OPEC Mexico. Canada is our number one source of crude oil.RobTheDrummer wrote:We need to get off the middle eastern teet right now, and be off of it for good.

i'd love to see some new nuclear power plants built. we're still using power plants built in the 70's... they're perfectly safe, but not as safe as new ones could be. nor are they as efficient. right now, there is no reason not to use nuclear power to ease pollution and consumption of fossil fuels.
when it comes to oil consumption... there will be a transitional stage. i don't know about anyone else on RP, but i can't afford to buy a hybrid right now. if i could, i'd buy an escape hybrid. when you start talking about water powered cars, and the like, efficiency is the major issue. you can't run a car on water like you can on gas. although bio diesel holds some water (parden the pun) compared to other ideas people have had.

Hate to say it
I hate to phrase it this way but I can't help but believe that if I am in the minority on this page then I am on the right track...
I guess we will see.
I watched the last president fuck us all and it seems like most of us enjoyed it....
Guess time will tell....
Not a lot more to say though....
Not much to do on here, lots of others can use a helping hand....
Peace...

The words "safe" and "clean" are oxymorons when used in conjuncton with nuclear power, especially the resultant waste it leaves behind.
I$ anybody THINKING about how many year$ and the ma$$ive amount$ of natural re$ource$ (including fo$$il fuel$) it would take to build even one nuke plant??? (I doubt it.) Plus, underground storage of nuclear waste will not be so "safe" if an earthquake or other natural distaster hits, but what the hey, inexpen$ive electricity i$ all there i$ to THINK about, right???
I still believe solar, wind, etc., are the ways to go...all the means necessary are readily available and the wind generated in the midwest alone could power most of the country. Of course, this would SAVE $ instead of passing the cost of new nuke plants on to the American people, and we could not have THAT, now could we???

Windmills aren't efficient enough. Nuclear is clean and very efficient, despite what you believe. Also, are you saying we should quit making roads and other buildings too, because of all the natural resources it takes? That's backwards thinking.YankeeRose wrote:The words "safe" and "clean" are oxymorons when used in conjuncton with nuclear power, especially the resultant waste it leaves behind.

How does efficiency matter when the source of energy is 100% free?RobTheDrummer wrote:Windmills aren't efficient enough...
I'm OK with nuclear power too, though I do believe that the incident at TMI was much worse than the public knew or ever will know.
There just seems to be something about nuclear power plants that I'm strangely attracted to.

You are right that the source is free, but the thousands of windmills we would need aren't....oh and what about all those poor bird casualties we will see and the fragmentation of land? Sounds silly, doesn't it?Ron wrote:How does efficiency matter when the source of energy is 100% free?RobTheDrummer wrote:Windmills aren't efficient enough...

I'm sure you've seen the movie "Rainman". You know the part of the movie where they are near Palm Springs and all of the windmills? I used to work for the son of the guy who started that windfarm a long time ago. He started with one windmill, took all of the profit and used it to build more windmills. In 1989 he was making about $9000 per day in pure profit.RobTheDrummer wrote:You are right that the source is free, but the thousands of windmills we would need aren't....oh and what about all those poor bird casualties we will see and the fragmentation of land? I can see some concern over bird strikes, but fragmentation is going to happen as long as the human population grows.
