I agree with Kevin. Learn to keep to the topic(s) and DON'T TAKE IT TO A PERSONAL LEVEL !ToonaRockGuy wrote:The above quote from Kyle is why I don't get involved in political threads. You know what, you just go ahead and vote for McCain and flush this country down the toilet.CHICKSINGA wrote:Give me one example of the liberal media attacking Joe Biden with gotcha questions like Gibson and Couric did to Palin.
Do you think that Biden would have an astute answer in such a rapid fire situation? Would Couric and Gibson continue to badger Biden? Doubt it.
AND when Palin did mention the fact that in 2006 McCain was forefront in warning about the future debacle that would result in the mortgage market from the lack of regulation going on, (Of which Obama did NOTHING) Couric ignored it and just kept digging for answers that are tough to explain in such a forum. Because she had an agenda - to make Palin look bad, no matter what.
Is everybody here so knowledgeable that they have the answers or are we fighting as partisan "haters' so much that you just spew the spin that the media puts forth? How much time do you spend watching all channels that cover politics? We watch NBC, CNN and Fox. We spend our time watching all of it. Right now the only person making ANY clear sense is Lou Dobbs!
Before you get on here and just reiterate the Party Spin that the LIBERAL Media wants to brainwash you with, SPEND the TIME! Do the Work and use your own mind!
Right now the Republicans are holding up the decision about the bailout – but shouldn’t this decision take the time necessary? Do we really want to give tax payer money to the people that screwed it up in the first place? We aren’t “transfer of wealth” thinkers, but we feel the money would be better spent to give it to the people to pay their mortgages.
Yes it's our party, but we won't sit back and say they are right just because it is. We do the work to have valid conclusions of OUR OWN.
Be honest - DO YOU?
But I disagree that the President doesn't matter. The Presidential powers seem to be constantly increasing over both houses.
True, Bill. I'm hoping that the next admin will throw down the veil of secrecy the Bushies have put up. This president uses "executive priviledge" like a get-out-of-jail-free card (literally!
), and "loses" tens of thousands of e-mails and other recorded correspondence on a regular basis. No president (and especially vice-president) before has had the carte-blanche and lack of accountability, with the exception of possibly the Nixon admin, before Watergate proved absolute power corrupts. --->JMS

Ok - I finally found the time to watch the debates. And, as I've stated before I still have the same stance on issues like the war. It's a big mismangaged mess. But I still believe that we need to keep the terrorist factions at bay.
As far as the "Witch Hunter" thing. Yes - it's strange. So is Jeremiah Wright. So our a lot of religious sects. I have a friend who believes in crystal healing, etc. I have my own multi-spiritual beliefs. I won't judge anyone that way. Not Obama, not Palin.
My vote still will not go Democratic simply because I don't believe in National Healthcare, open borders, SSI benefits for anything other than retirement, and funding ridiculous socialist programs. Bush didn't do so well on these issues, either. But he's NOT a conservative. I don't think McCain is either. But I KNOW Obama and Biden are not.
I know for a fact that McCain tied to put legislature forth to quell the out of control mortgage practices in 2006. And even though Obama said at the debate that he did, he DID NOT. I guess that lie is ok, it's not about the war.
I do believe in offshore drilling, Nuclear Power and drilling in ANWAR. I do believe in equal taxes for all - Rich, middle class and lower class. Flat tax would be fine with me. I don't believe in Earned Income Tax credits, especially to those who pay no income tax. That is socialism. I believe that most wealthy people worked hard to get where they are and create most of the jobs in this country. I realize that greed is rampant and caused much of the financial upheaval but I don't hold the "rich" accountable. By Al Gore's standards when he was running for President we were considered rich. What a joke!
I don't profess to know everything, but I know what I believe. It may not be popular, but that never concerns me. I think for myself and stand by it.
If I'm wrong, I'll admit it. If you have examples please share.

I wish I could say I don't blame the rich, but I do. They do not all work to get there. In fact more than %50 of the rich are handed that life style one way or another. A flat tax for all? That amazes me to hear someone say. If you can give more you should. This country is in bad shape and if an American can give more in taxes to fight that war or help ssi than they have a duty to their country to do it. Pay back for those freedoms that being taken away daily.
I love to hear big tough men say how we needed this war. They say the will follow us home. That is fear talking. Bush scared you. Some of us were able to see what he was doing from the beginning and a lot of others are catching on now. I guess some people cannot admit when they were wrong.
I say give me liberty or give me death. I want the freedom I was promised in the constitution. I will not cower down over one fruit loop with a boob. I will not change my life for that horrible man, or he wins.

Where do your statistics from to back up such a ridiculous statement? Why should people who don't want to go to school (or work hard enough to do well to go) get any breaks? I grew up POOR. I never asked for ONE hand out. I worked my ass off to get ahead. Not boo-hooed about how poor I was, or have a child before I could take care of him. Like my parents did. Bush didn't scare me. 3000+ dead innocent people in the World Trade Center and insane terrorists who would kill their children to kill the "infidels" scare me.
What freedom do you suppose you are owed in the constitution that you don't already get? To collect tax payer money without earning it? What have you done to deserve it? I'd really love to know. Did you serve in the military? If so, I apologize. The Peace Corp? Please give me some indication that you deserve this freedom you speak of. Do you deserve to be safe? If you are a hardworking person who earned everything you have, I apologize. If you are just one more person with their hand out asking the government (taxpayers) to save you, sorry.

1.
Witch Hunter vs. Rev. Wright.
Rev. Wright's problem was he called whites racists. Even though Obama was not there when it was said. As he continued with his racist rhetoric, Obama denounced what he said. COOL !
The Witch Hunter beeves in...well...witches and the hunting down of them. Palin not only accepts this. She credits his prayer with her becoming governor.
Not to mention that her church believes they and Alaska will save us from Armageddon ! Does that mean (McCain has had Melanomas 4 times ) when she is President she will push the nuclear button from Alaska ?
2.
Obama does not believe in national health care. It just goes to show that you are uninformed and buy into the Republican sound bites.
Here is Obama's Plan. Please read it and you will see how wrong you are.
http://www.barackobama.com/issues/healthcare/
3.
Open Borders.
Do you know why the borders are open. It is because the rich want the cheap labor. Republicans like to keep their rich friends happy. And these illegals stealing A LOT of good paying construction jobs from Americans. Wake up. Bush has had eight years to close the border.
If you read what Obama said in 2006 you will see that he AND McCAIN worked on a plan together. Yes, unless he has flip flopped. Mccain agrees with Obama on illegals
http://obama.senate.gov/podcast/060504-immigration_ral/
4. Social Security only for retirement.
What if you pay social security but then become disabled ?
I don't know what other social programs you were speaking of so I can't comment.
5.
I'd like to know the bill that McCain tried to push through to quell the mortgage problem ? McCain is all about DEREGULATOIN.
When McCain suspended his campaign to go save the bailout - He had NO imput until it was nearing the end. Then he said "There should be less regulations" ! He was one of the KEATING FIVE. He will never change. His economic adviser id Phil Gram. Phil Gram IS the man who is responsible for this economic disaster ! He put addition's on to bills (at the advice of Enron) for deregulation.
Obama has been saying he wants to CLOSE these loopholes for over a year - while McCain was going around telling how strong our economy is. His Economic adviser Phil Gram made the statement that there is nothing wrong with our economy, we are just a nation of whiners !
6.
Offshore drilling. Most economists agree that if prices don't go up in the next ten to fifteen years, the offshore drilling might save you between $.03 and $15 per gallon. Yet McCain tells you that it will give us independence - Please.
Nuclear. That scares me mostly because they are such an easy target for terrorists. And , we can't yet properly dispose of the nuclear waste.
At least Obama has a plan besides keeping the USA addicted to oil.
http://my.barackobama.com/page/content/newenergy
A.N.W.R. Stands for Alaska National Wildlife Refuge. Alaskans want to drill but if you ask them why is is because it will bring them jobs. If you ask them if they could have jobs and NOT drill in ANWR they are for that. In other words they already got screwed in Valdez and they don't want to drill in ANWR.
What's worse ! The Democrats tried to push a bill through that said, "If you drill in ANWR the oil must stay in the United States. John McCain voted AGAINST that bill !

7.
Taxes. McCain was called a maverick because he was against GW for giving big tax breaks to the top 4% of the rich. HOWEVER he as changed his mind (Hmmm - no surprise) and now wants to make those tax breaks to the rich Permanent !

Obama wants to reinstate the tax to the very rich and CUT taxes if you make less than 1/4 Million Dollars per year. Seems to me you and obama want the same thing, some equality in taxation.
The earned income tax credit IS Bipartisan !
8.
Rampant Greed. Was made possible by McCain's economic advisor Phil gram and a LACK of oversight from the federal government. Greed will persist in damaging the economy without oversight. McCain is openly against any oversight for the 700 Billion of your money he wants to give away.
Sorry Trace. Much of what you believe is wrong. You really should see how much your ideas and Obama's are similar.

Are you OK with the fact that we lost 4000 American lives going after THE WRONG MAN ? You do know 911 had NOTHING to do with Iraq don't you ?CHICKSINGA wrote:

It's a fact Bush and his gang lied for the sole purpose of starting a war we shouldn't be in . McCain supports Bush all the way on this war. That should scare you.
Obama has been saying for a long time he wants bin Laden who is in Afghanistan. I'd think we should go after the terrorists rather than spend 100 years in a country where we act as the peace keepers in a civil war among their three religious factions.
^This guy knows.KyleMayket wrote:How about the fact that she doesn't believe dinosaurs were here 4000 years ago. there is a 3/5 chance that McCain will not survive his first term (going on median age). She's going to have this countries nuclear codes! doesn't that scare the shit out of anyone else!?

I do not appreciate a personal attach on me as a person. I have in-fact done very well for myself. I have worked since the age of 15. Not that any of that is your business. It does surprise me that you felt the need to go there.
It is a fact that in the US 5% of the population owns nearly 60% of the wealth. It is common sense that they want to keep it. They pass it onto their kids. The greedy get greedier. I never mentioned a hand out. What do you suppose it means to be a true American? If they can help their county with going without things like heating oil shouldn’t they?
On to your next argument, as a country we lose more people a year to car accidents. Are we going to war ageist cars? Where is your proof that would happen again? All there was and still is, is a fear of the next terrorist attach. Who told you to fear that?
Why do I deserve freedom and rights? Because every human on the planet does.

This thread has brought out the best in all of you.
Somebody says she wants her freedoms and gets pigeonholed as a useless nobody asking for handouts? WOW!!! The apologies in the post itself indicates you knew what you were doing too.
I'm proud of you if you worked hard to become independent and wealthy or independently wealthy, but that attitude, that attitude right there. It's the whole reason this nation is, and will continue to be on a downward spiral. Fuck the facts. Lets make assumptions and jump to conclusions, cuz it's much easier and less time consuming.
Vote for whoever you want. You guys think we get one day every four years to pick someone to blame the next four on anyways. I'm already printing my "Don't blame me I voted for Nugent" bumper stickers.

As far as your non-answer about freedom and rights - Can you tell me why? "Just because" is a cop out.
I was not assuming that this person is getting handouts at all. But tell me where the above statement makes any sense at all. Where did you get these facts? It's none of my business what anyone here does. But I also feel it's not my responsibility to support people either. If they are legitimately disabled, fine. But I know people who get SSI for their kids because their father's a lazy drug ass who won't work. Why do I have to pay for his kids? There are other examples. Why should someone from another country whose parents never paid into the system get a dime?
And really, Roar Chick, if you want respect, at least use a spell checker. I barely understand some of your points because of it. It's not hard and that way I don't have to infer your meaning. The word is attack not attach.
I respect Hawk for going to the trouble answer my post with facts that I will research and use my best judgment to make up my mind. If I see that he is correct I will change my mind. I am not so in love with either candidate that I can't do that. Do I sometimes reiterate spin? I'm sure, we all seem to if we feel passionate about our beliefs. All we can ever hope for is that we listen and research with an open mind and vote the best we can.

I deserve rights because everyone does. That seems very simple to me. Are you going to define who is worthy? If not you than who? I am an American, I pay taxes, and follow (most) of the laws, is it my color of skin or maybe sex? What criterion now defines which Americans they spoke about in the constitution?
There are a few articles about the rich and poor in the US to check out and I have more if you need them. My point was this; taxes should range for people, as incomes range.
I am so very sorry I hurt your delicate sensibilities with my spelling. I hope you will recover!

Wealth is rarely created through wages. It comes through owning and investing capital. That's why I have to disagree that those who are the richest in this country "worked" to get there. I'm sure that a lot of them worked hard through school. I'm currently busting my ass through grad school right now; however, I know that the day gig it's going to lead to isn't going to make me rich.
If wealth were created through wages, I'd probably feel a lot differently.

I think that McCain and Obama have almost identical views here - I'm glad I looked into this further.
3.
Open Borders.
Do you know why the borders are open. It is because the rich want the cheap labor. Republicans like to keep their rich friends happy. And these illegals stealing A LOT of good paying construction jobs from Americans. Wake up. Bush has had eight years to close the border.
First off - Bush Sucks! I admit that. Too liberal, Bad Management of the War, plays to his cronies
If you read what Obama said in 2006 you will see that he AND McCAIN worked on a plan together. Yes, unless he has flip flopped. Mccain agrees with Obama on illegals
http://obama.senate.gov/podcast/060504-immigration_ral/
I think Obama has more "forgiveness" built in to his plan - citing that he would do the same for his family if he lived in poverty stricken countries. The problem is that immigrants do nothing to fight corruption in their own countries they just come here. I lived in LA for 8 years. I saw immigration issues so out of wack 12 years ago and it's no better. Once again Bush Sux - but I think Obama will let too much slide. Looking at McCain's plan I'm skeptical too. Will it be implemented ?- doubtful.
4. Social Security only for retirement.
What if you pay social security but then become disabled ?
I don't know what other social programs you were speaking of so I can't comment.
If a person is TRULY disabled I believe in helping. Too many are not being truthful. I know a family that gets SSI for their kids because Dad's a lazy druggie and won't work. Sorry - I should not have to pay for his kids. It's too damn bad that the most important thing we do in life - procreate - is the one thing we don't have to have a license for. I know of many people getting SSI benefits for like reasons. People playing music (which we all know is work) AND not claiming the income from playing because they wouldn't get those benefits
5.
I'd like to know the bill that McCain tried to push through to quell the mortgage problem ? McCain is all about DEREGULATOIN.
[b]Following is McCain's speech on the Senate floor during debate of Federal Housing Regulatory Act Of 2005 urging the Senate to pass the Act which fell to defeat after being blocked by Senate Democrats.
Mr. President, (referring to the Presiding Officer of the Senate) this week Fannie Mae’s regulator reported that the company’s quarterly reports of profit growth over the past few years were “illusions deliberately and systematically created” by the company’s senior management, which resulted in a $10.6 billion accounting scandal.
The Office of Federal Housing Enterprise Oversight’s report goes on to say that Fannie Mae employees deliberately and intentionally manipulated financial reports to hit earnings targets in order to trigger bonuses for senior executives. In the case of Franklin Raines, Fannie Mae’s former chief executive officer, OFHEO’s report shows that over half of Mr. Raines’ compensation for the 6 years through 2003 was directly tied to meeting earnings targets.
The report of financial misconduct at Fannie Mae echoes the deeply troubling $5 billion profit restatement at Freddie Mac. The OFHEO report also states that Fannie Mae used its political power to lobby Congress in an effort to interfere with the regulator’s examination of the company’s accounting problems. This report comes some weeks after Freddie Mac paid a record $3.8 million fine in a settlement with the Federal Election Commission and restated lobbying disclosure reports from 2004 to 2005.
These are entities that have demonstrated over and over again that they are deeply in need of reform. For years I have been concerned about the regulatory structure that governs Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac—known as Government-sponsored entities or GSEs—and the sheer magnitude of these companies and the role they play in the housing market. OFHEO’s report this week does nothing to ease these concerns.
In fact, the report does quite the contrary. OFHEO’s report solidifies my view that the GSEs need to be reformed without delay. I join as a cosponsor of the Federal Housing Enterprise Regulatory Reform Act of 2005, S. 190, to underscore my support for quick passage of GSE regulatory reform legislation. If Congress does not act, American taxpayers will continue to be exposed to the enormous risk that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac pose to the housing market, the overall financial system, and the economy as a whole.
I urge my colleagues to support swift action on this GSE reform legislation."
Senate Democrats blocked the passage of the Bill and while it passed in the House it failed in the Senate because of the Democrats.
I got a 125% loan on my house in California. Bill Clinton was President. I held on to that house for 6 years after I left California as a rental and in 2002 paid off the 125% and the 1st mortgage and made $60,000 profit (AND paid 15% capital gains tax) George Bush was President. The loans that have failed started before Mr. Bush. The economic housing boom in Ca. was during Bush's term. Seems to me to have happened over both Democratic and Repulican presidential terms. I came out ahead because I 1. took a risk, 2. made sure that my mortgage was never unpaid 3. Sold at the right time.
I read Obama's plans - while they sound good there is no specific plan except to say that we will subscribe to Green Technology. Ok - I work for The Department of Environmental Protection. Ethanol is a boondoggle that costs more to produce than saves. You cannot transport ethanlol through pipes - you have to transport it with trucks burning, guess what?, gas. In the future I do hope to see more electric vehicles. But watch how electricity skyrockets. There IS too much GREED. And we all want a new mousetrap - has BIG OIL stopped the development of technologies? undoubtedly. But no one bitched enough till the pump price went nuts. It did before in the late 70's. We should have done something then. Windmills? The paultry few we erect around here do next to nothing. We need thousands like they have in the Tehacapi Desert in CA. to be effective. What will hear then? NIMBY! (Not in my back yard!)
John McCain voted AGAINST that bill !![]()
Yep - John McCain did vote against it - what a dumbass! My hope for the future - the drilling for natural gas in the Marcellus Shale layer in PA and neighboring states. If they find that the yield is what they think it will be a truly great thing. But I still believe Nuclear is good - I'll save the reasons for another time - I'm going loooong!
7.
Taxes. McCain was called a maverick because he was against GW for giving big tax breaks to the top 4% of the rich. HOWEVER he as changed his mind (Hmmm - no surprise) and now wants to make those tax breaks to the rich Permanent !-
Obama wants to reinstate the tax to the very rich and CUT taxes if you make less than 1/4 Million Dollars per year. Seems to me you and obama want the same thing, some equality in taxation.
I'll be honest - I pay too many damn taxes and I don't want to pay any more. I'm not considered wealthy under each plan - so we'll see if either implements something that works better.
The earned income tax credit IS Bipartisan !
Yes it is and it's socialism and I think it's bullshit!
8.
Rampant Greed. Was made possible by McCain's economic advisor Phil gram and a LACK of oversight from the federal government. Greed will persist in damaging the economy without oversight. McCain is openly against any oversight for the 700 Billion of your money he wants to give away.
Voted down - Republican's the majority, but mostly considered bipartisan.
Sorry Trace. Much of what you believe is wrong. You really should see how much your ideas and Obama's are similar.
Bill - I still don't see it that way, but I came to the middle even more and I'm better educated. Thanks!

Re: o
What do you guys think of a straight consumption tax? No income tax whatsoever, just tax goods and services (not food, basic clothing, etc). If you want to save - do it.CHICKSINGA wrote:Yes it is and it's socialism and I think it's bullshit!Hawk wrote:

* People who have lots of money will still spend lots of money and in turn will pay lots of taxes.
* People who scrape to get by will pay less and get more - helping lower class families stay out of poverty
* The IRS could be drastically reduced because they'd only have to audit businesses that sell goods/services - saving tons of tax $$$
Just curious if either candidate has even considered this type of a tax system.
