Battle of the bands and finding the winner
I've been asked to provide production for a battle of the bands type event.
I've also pitched an idea to the promoter to avoid the he who brings the most friends guarantees a win type event.
Here it is;
3-4 judges on a small panel each get 1 vote
The attendees also get 1 vote the favorite so to speak
Add the Judges votes together with the favorite vote
Example
Band A gets the favorite vote and two Judges votes
Band B gets one Judges vote
Band C gets zero votes
Band C gets one judges vote
Band A wins because they have a total of three votes. Ties could be resolved via the amount of favorite votes.
Band B,C or D could also win if they had the judges votes.
This would help with the bring the most friends and you win type event.
It has some kinks I know but its only an idea.

I agree that having a judging panel of people who know music along with the audience popular vote would be a much more fair way to have a battle of the bands. Most battles of the bands in the past have been a fiasco in their voting process and many bands are reluctant to participate in them.
By the way, who gets to be the nasty British judge?

When I did that battle of the bands at that greedy venue I used to book for, I did a panel of judges counting for 75% of the vote and fan voting couting for 25% of the vote. The judges had three categories...performance, musicianship, and overall music. Here's the kicker...that backfired on me. Once the bands heard it was judge based...they felt no need to bring any of their fans and felt no need to promote the event. One band brought with them five people...or as they called them "roadies"...bullshit! That band sold me five tickets that day..."roadies" became paying patrons! Anyway, fan voting puts people in the venue but typically isn't the way to find the best band. Judges is the real and best way of ifnding your quality act but that leaves an empty venue.

JayBird has a valid point, but having the entire thing based on "he who brings the most friends" thing is also totally uncool. There's a middle ground somewhere, I'm sure. Otherwise, it'll just become another Emergenza Music Festival...thank God that's getting re-tooled.

In the example above the fans vote can acount for 50% of the total. Depending on the number of bands. You'd need at least two votes to win.
One fan based vote plus one judges vote might be enough.
Four or more bands and the fans vote counts just as much as the judges vote.
One judges vote to each of four bands and the tie breaker would be the judges or fans vote.
Lessen the number of Judges.
I don't know just thinking.

Why not just use both on different levels? Set up 2 prizes (assuming you have a prize system). Have the one that brings in the most fans win one prize, and have the judges elect their winner for another prize. Separate it entirely, but give room for both. That would give several bands a shot to really feel like they've accomplished something

I was asked one time to be judge at one of these battle of the bands at Lakemont because people respected my opinion and I was asked by Jim Price but I have to pass because my little brother's band was in it and I knew other people in other bands ( Shatered China, Fatal Maim, Geonesta etc ) playing and I felt that I could not be fair to all but if I was asked to do it now I would say HELL YEAH and where is the pencil and paper!
is it 4:20 yet?
