Favorite Concept Album

Post by Don Hughes »

There isn't much talk about concept albums on the board. What is everyone's favorites?

Queensryche - Operation: Mindcrime (both 1 and 2)
Dream Theater - Scenes From A Memory
Trans Siberian Orchestra - Beethoven's Last Night

Any bands locally release a concept album??

Queensryche, yeah man! I love 'em!

A few more that I like are

Pink Floyd - The Wall

Iron Maiden - Seventh Son of a Seventh Son. Powerslave has some elements, but not a concept album in whole.

Jethro Tull - Thick as a brick I really like old Tull material, he was a musical genuis.

Styx - The grand Illusion, Pieces of Eight,Paradise Theatre
I like The Styx alot, they had great production, awesome vocals, lyric, and killer guitars by Shaw and DeYoung. A good package there.

Judas Priest - Nostradamus, it's growin on me, but there's some filler on there.

Pretty much anything by Poison or Motley Crue, cause all of their albums were about partying and getting pussy. They had a nice concept there!

Nice!!! 8)

Most of King's albums were a concept, I particularily like "Eye of the Witch", it's about the Salem witch trials of 1692.
What I like is that he will sing in a different voice to portray each character in all of his albums.

Me and my buddies always said that he has multiple personality issues that come out in his music.

Gotta be a tie between Rush's 2112, and The Wall; but there've been a lot of cool concept albums in my player. Resurruption's the best local concept album, easily for me. Mindcrime and Sgt. Pepper's are obvious monsters, too, I based my list on how much time I've spent listening.
I have a prog-rock/thrash concept record all outlined and ready to write, already have one song underway... it's just one of those things, though. I'll probably never get it written. It's called Redbringer, and it's about a guy who's colorblind, except that he sees blood in color. People start dying around him, and everybody suspects him.
Anyway, I also spent a fair amount of time listening to Styx's Paradise Theatre, so that should be on my list. The Savatage record was awesome, too.---->JMS

It's not my favorite concept, but I do own it and listen to "Pet Sounds". Which Paul McCartney often calls his favorite album.

Great calls on "Blood Mountain" and "Operation Mindcrime"! A few other forgotten gems:

1. "Haunted" by P-O-E. A freakin' pop concept album! She rocks, and is one of my favorite all-time singers.
2. "Operation Mindcrime II" by Queensryche. All right, it's not MC I, but it's still the best Queensryche album in years, and has some great tunes.
3. "Brave New World" by Iron Maiden. Not exactly a linear storyline album, but it does have a lot of ties into to the dystopian future concept.
