Are (Were) you ever a "genre snob" ?

I remember in the early 70s (yeah, I'm an old man ) that my friends / band mates and I thought that ONLY the prog rock genre of the time was real music. We made fun of the likes of Black Sabbath, Kiss and Alice Cooper.

I'm way over that these days, and I respect all material that's done well.

I wasn't a big disco fan back in the day. I have a button that I bought back then that says "Disco still sucks" . Nowadays I can tolerate most styles/genres with the exception of a few.

I'm not gonna lie, of course I think that the music I listen to is the best out there. And everyone else feels the same way about their music.

Now, on the other hand, I can and do respect musicians who play other styles, even though I dont like it.

To me that's an area in which I matured. I recall when I was younger that everyone who didnt play Thrash Metal sucked, I even hated 'hair metal'.
Now I like all 80's metal because in my opinion it appeals to me more than the music out currently, but I respect it all none the less.

I know that alot of you guys dont care for my music, so I'm not gonna go bashing yours either, it's just a respect thing.
I'm sure that every two people can find atleast 1 band or musician that they both agree on. It's a fact.

I know there are people out there who are. I have recorded with a jazz band and I get the " What are you doing" comment every time I play with them. Well I love to play jazz, as I think all drummers should play jazz. All my friends think I'm nuts ( there not drummers) LOL

I agree, rap an hip hop are about the only genre's I do not like. Other than that, I listen to everything else.

That's funny because I don't like songs that have words in them that the radio stations have to bleep them out all the time.....

I like all types as long as its done right. I will admit that I don't care too much for most heavy but it just seems to give me a headache. I shouldn't do that headbanging stuff..ouch.

I'm what I'd like to think fairly open minded. I like a little of everything. BUT I cannot abide singers who sound like munchkins and/or little girls. Over use of vibrato makes me cringe.

So yes, in that respect I am a snob.

Good topic, Bill, we were discussing this at the Battle of the Bands a few weeks ago.
I said then that when I was a teenager, and well into my 20's, if it didn't have crunchy guitars, I wasn't listening, at least rock-wise. I missed out on some great music... since then, I've found that time period gave the world the birth of rap and hip-hop, the peak of funk music, the rise of world music, and a lot of other great stuff. I never paid much attention to the high school marching band, but when the Cavaliers Drum Corps came to Bellwood, and saw maybe the best in the world at that time rehearsing, man, how could you sit in the stands and have that perfect brass note blast you in the face, and not be impressed as hell? It's not really very different than cracking a nice warm tube amp wide open, and snapping that pick across the strings, it's all thick and meaty, but cuts, too.
It's so stupid to not just consume as much as you can, no matter what the genre. They're all related anyway.------>JMS

when i first got into metal, i was a total genre snob, but as i grew up and started listening to classic rock and hair bands and all sorts of other stuff, i relised that it pays to immerse yourself in as much music as you can. now, i can pretty much listen to anything. in the span of one day i can go from george jones to tom waits to beastie boys to pantera to blue oyster cult. anything. if it's music, i can usually handle it. just no top 100 hits. most of those songs (i.e. 50 cent, britney, umm... uhh... wow, i really don't listen to any hits stations!!) have no melody to them. no singable parts other than words. so i guess long story short... yea, i'll listen to anything other than top 100 hits

I disagree. I don't hate any genre of music. I listened to all types, and still do. I can get ideas for my drumming from every genre out there, from some rapper using an old school LinnDrum sample or a Roland 808 to create a super-funky rhythm to a middle eastern tabla player demonstrating some of their rhythms in music. As long as it's music, it's good. Do I like modern rap? No, but I don't hate it. Do I like modern country? No, but again, I don't hate it.

I was a genre snob until about 8th grade when I came across my first copy of Kottonmouth Kings "Royal Highness". Go ahead, get a chuckle. For my money there are few hiphop cds that can top this one. But that album had shown me white suburban kids, at the time, rapping about just pot and skateboarding and hanging out and incorporating other musical influences into their work. It made me realize just because I liked metal doesn't mean I couldn't listen to other things such as the 'forbidden' rap.

I do not listen to much classic rock, no hair metal, no techno, and I cannot stand most POP.

If having likes and dislikes makes you a snob, then I guess I'm a snob all around.

"Genre snob" presses way too deep to be right. I've got my opinions, and there are some genres that I stay away from. The top 40 part made earlier is an example, although from having to put up with it a lot lately, I've actually found a few songs that, outside my usual realms, I do like. So then, what are my "musical realms"?

Well, I currently have tons of music in my "realms". Most of it is various forms of metal, rock, classic rock, punk, and softer music (i.e. Jewel's early albums, Sarah McLachlan (damn, I used to never mess the name up), etc.

However, there's much that drives away from all of those that you would NOT expect from me. You'll find a couple rap songs. You'll find a few full instrumental songs. You'll find ballads, soft songs (no Michael Bolton for the record, sorry guys), you'll find acoustic songs, you'll find a little funk, a little top 40 music, you'll find oldies, and you'll find things that I don't even know what it is!

Now according to that,... Well, we're all "music snobs", but then I won't just say something sucks unless it really does (remember that night we saw those hardcore kids, Paul?). It can be something you'd think I'd listen to constantly and if I feel as such, I'll tell you I don't like it
