Most Hated/Overrated band

Post by grimmbass »

Alright, enough positive energy!

What bands/artists do you hate or at least feel are over-rated!

I have lived my life to hate Creed, and they finally are G-O-N-E! Aerosmith needs to go next!

Who do you all wish would disappear?

one word - Nirvana

If I hear another talking head dufus jerkoff from VH1 or MTV refer to them as the Led Zeppelin of this generation I am personally going to stab them thru the heart with a mic stand. Good band, important band, but Chris Cornell is ten times the songwriter and 1000 times the singer Kurt Kabang was.....

I'm sure I'll get slammed, but here goes...

Neil Young- Amazing songwriter, crappy singer, crappy guitarist.
Bob Dylan- See above.
Pearl Jam- Eddie Vedder really needs to stop making music. Please.
Celine Dion- Somebody please nuke her. Seriously.
Michael Bolton- See Celine Dion.
Ja Rule- When he sings, he sounds like he's attempting to swallow a weed wacker at high speed.
John Tesh- Satan Incarnate (sorry, Bobby Lee!!)
Audioslave- Give me RATM back, RIGHT NOW, DAMMIT!!

And I lost a ton of respect for Rush (my all-time fave band) for putting out that God-awful cover album a couple weeks ago. Good Lord that thing blows.

After how they massacred The Who, Limp Bizkit. Durst, you have had your 15 minutes of fame. Now get outta here! And take Puddle Of Mudd with you, they stank up the stage at Rolling Rock Town Fair last year!

And ToonaRockGuy, I totally disagree with you on Rush. I like Feedback - I liked hearing three masters cutting loose, stepping out of musical character and having some fun with tunes they first cut their teeth on.

The White Stripes: While the dude has a knack for writing a catchy hook, somebody please give that chick a coupon for free drum lessons at the local music store; she cannot even play a fill (if you want to call them that) in time. You don't have to be Neil Peart or Buddy Rich to be a good drummer, but PLAYING IN TIME IS KIND OF A PREREQUISITE FOR BEING A DRUMMER!!!!

All of those really crappy indie bands that you see on Conan O' Brien. (not that there's anything wrong with indie bands, just those awful garage bands he has on) God, any slock who knows two barre chords and has a shaggy hair cut can be on national television. This also goes for all of those psuedo-avant garde noise bands that have their asses kissed by the music press elite. Newsflash here - The Velvet Underground and Sonic Youth have been there and done that; albeit they did it with a lot more talent and a lot less commercial success.

The Doors: 21st Century: Ray, Rob, John, what the hell are you doing? There was only one John Lenon, one Elvis Presley, one Jimi Hendrix, and there was ONLY ONE JIM MORRISON. What's even worse is your touring with this farce of a reunion.
"He's the electric horseman, you better back off!" - old sKool making a reference to the culturally relevant 1979 film.

Amen to that one!!

I love Skynyrd, however, I don't know why people keep requesting them. AC/DC is awsome, but Johnson needs to give it up. See what happens when you scream for 20 years what you will sound like?!? I'm honestly tired of hearing most of stuff playing on the radio. Honestly, you hear it over and over and over and over and over again that you just wish something totall fresh will come out....Not someone riding on another band's coat tail.

Neil Young -- In the interest of public safety, there should be legislation banning him from using an electric guitar. I like Harvest, though.

The Rolling Stones. I don't hate them and I do respect them, but out of all their hits, there isn't one song by them I'd actually like to cover.

That whole Seattle thing. There was a lot of whining and not even one great guitar player--I don't recall ever hearing a solo. Oh, I know, they were rebelling against the shameless guitar excesses of the 80s, right?

LoneWolf DE-sensitivity training classes will commence the next full moon at midnight on chimney rocks.

Lonewolf, The whole Seattle movement only produced one great band in my mind - Alice In Chains. I'd argue they were even grunge, but if you hear any of there stuff, Jerry Cantrell is one hell of a guitarist who played leads in every song. Plus the vocal harmonies are by far the best in the biz in the last 10yrs of rock music.

My opinion on who is overated - THE FREAKIN' DARKNESS !! If i hear that falsetto one more time! If you want GOOD new rock buy velvet revolver.

Any of these power pop punk, neo punk, whatever the hell they call it bands! Good Charlotte, blink, etc. etc. They all sound the same and should quit now.

and of course Britney, Christina, Jessica, her sister, etc. should all quit music and enter the PORN business where they belong!!

I agree with JP about Limp Bizkit... first album was neat in 97... after that they all sucked and got worse...

Neil Young? sorry I have to disagree... He is classic... never get tired of listening to Old man or Needle and the Damage done....

anyway... here is my list...

Nickelback.... shut up... here is proof that they suck... 2 examples...
http://media.skoopy.com/vids/vid_00174.wmv (walking off stage)
http://www.thewebshite.co.uk/nickelback.htm (proof of suckness)

And not naming particular artists... I'm tired of so much R&B/pop or whatever it is... singing out the club/boys/girls/other lame stuff... it has it's place in pop culture... but lately I feel like it's completely taking over... ugh...

Nirvana: Yea, they had a different thing going for that time, but the media places way to much importance on this mediocre band
Bob Dylan: Over-rated? Hell no, he is an amazing songwriter and his unique role in the evolution of music is unparalleled. He's my favorite songwriter but should retire...and yes Toona, crappy singer and guitarist
Sex Pistols: There's much better punk bands but love the name (hey there would be a cool thread-fave band names)
Celine Dion: See ToonaRocks post
Ja Rule: See ToonaRocks post (its the way he walks, the way he talks, blah blah) Sorry if I put that song in your head for the day...
Stones: I don't hate them, maybe they're not even over-rated exactly, but for every good song there are 5 crappy ones
Velvet Underground: I don't get it
Eric Clapton: He's good but not God...sometimes boring actually
..........but most over-rated (in my opinion)............
GRATEFUL DEAD: Some good songs, but TOO much mindless noodling, bad singing, but I do find the culture and their place in rock music interesting...I enjoy reading books about them. Sorry Jerry RIP

wow Dwane tell us how you really feel, no I can't listen to the radio anymore either. The music (??) I know you are referring to as hated & over-rated, well, for Rockpage those are a given. Besides them! Maybe a better way to phrase it would be: what bands/singers are you supposed to like, but don't

I was never a fan of the whole progressive movement, Yes, ELP, etc (Rush gets a pass here cause at least they have a sense of humor) It always seemed self-indulgent and boring to me, Classically influenced, my ass, Technique is fine but, say something.

I could never get off on some of the heavier metallyier metal, ( I know I'll take shit for this) Iron Maiden, Yeah, some technically cool moments but So what?, what the hell does the Flight of Icarus have to do with my life? The whole leather jacket, head-bangin, if it ain't metal, it ain't shit thing just seemed a bit too. . . .dogmatic , that's the word, for me

I guess I like my metal, medium

The Neo-hardcore, Godsmack, et, al "ARRRRRRRGH" is not a lyric"

The seattle thing, somebody said, except Alice in Chains, I'd add Soundgarten but the rest of them....blech and Kurt Cobain the next John Lennon. . . .Puuuuuuleeeeeze. a great Songwriter, Cobain but the next Lennon?...PUUUULEEESE.

Neo R & B, News flash! real Rhythm and Blues is gone now, it died with Marvin Gaye. This new stuff is just more Pop crap that's barely one step up from the Britney, Lindsey, Cristina, N'Stync, backstreet horseshit, poisoning the minds and musical tastes of our helpless youth.

Anybody who needs Dancers to appear on Leno or Letterman

DIVAs, from American Idol on up, they all desperately wanna be Mariah, who desperatley wantes to be Whitney Who (in between visiting Bobby in Jail and smoking crack) desperatley wants to be Aretha. and that includes your overblown show in vegas, french canadian ass too Celine.

by the Way the South Park guys are totally right about Barbra Streisand.

ANYBODY and I MEAN ANYBODY, who puts the name of their group in the lyrics of their song.

Metallica is the obvious first choice here, I mean for Pete's sake, they have become Craptallica...

Now the rest, I like others will have people slam me on these but it's my opinion, so here it is:
Korn(J.Davis singing is lame now comared to the first album)
Godsmack(how many times can I hear a song about go away?)
Nickelback(all sounds the same)
3 Doors Down(look above)
The Darkness(no explanation needed)
pretty much 95% of all nu(un)-metal....
If youth knew; if age could.

Hey FatVin, there is one songwriter I'm sure you don't think is over-rated or that you hate who mentioned the name of his (former) band in a song:
"I don't believe in the Beatles, I just believe in me..."
Pretentious, yes, but it was JOHN LENNON after all...

Ozzy-Once a metal icon, now a pathetic sell-out. Besides Blizzard of Ozz and a few cuts since, his music puts me to sleep.

Any band with cookie monster/bullfrog singers. It's a shame cause there's a ton of musically great bands, if you can get by the vocals.

Most overrated-Bruce Springsteen. Doesn't get any more boring than that.

Most hated-Just the thought that Queen might reunite with a new singer. Mercury simply cannot be replaced. Period. Kinda like Priest without Halford.

Here's another vote for Bruce Springsteen. The guy is a GREAT live act, and does some nice stuff when he gets in a more sinister mood. But in general his songs just don't stick with me. Great performer, bland material?

In defense of Kurt Cobain, I always thought he had a great "tortured soul" kind of voice, and had a talent for making listenable pop songs out of dissonant, off the wall chord progressions. At the same time, I agree that the music press has deified him to an absurd extent. And that AIC and Soundgarden produced a better catalog of work. :D

Re: Kurt Cobain...

I have to agree with Jimi Hatt, about AIC and Soundgarden putting out a better body of work...but the thing that really gets me is that the general public usually accepts Nirvana as the "innovators" of the Seattle grunge movement..

What, nobody heard of Mother Love Bone (the band that gave birth to BOTH Pearl Jam and Soundgarden) or Green River??

If you've never heard Mother Love Bone, do yourself a favor and get a copy of their only album, the double-disc "Apple". It's one of the most sonically amazing records I've ever heard. "Stardog Champion", "Bone China", "Stargazer" "Come Bite The Apple", and "Chloe Dancer/Crown Of Thorns" are 5 of the most amazing songs you'll ever hear. And believe me you, if Andrew Wood had not passed away, nobody would have given 2 sh*ts about Cobain.

I'm going to have to go with Godsmack and the lothesome CREED. This is great, I can vent on Creed online today instead of complaining to my wife about them. I have to vent daily about Creed or else the universe will implode. I can just imagine some big corporate boardroom with some music exectuitves scheming up a popular band. "Let's see. They have to be handsome, maybe hint at some kind of shady or tortured past. We'll give them an underlying pseudo Christian message that they can embrace and rebel against as we see fit. The singer......We'll make him be ultra sensitive, ultra bland so that he kinda reminds everybody of their favorite singer, even if it's Elvis or Eddie Vedder. Let's give him a Christ complex. Yeah, that's it. Oh, wait a humble Christ complex so that when the camera is on him he has that "I don't know what all the fuss is about" look on his face. We'll make them write songs that are real ambigious and then the band can refuse to comment on them. Then we can reel the public in like we did with everyone from the Scorpions to Fuel. You know, first CD....Lots of rockers/ one ballad........Second CD..Some rockers/ three ballads......Next CD..One rocker..all the rest ballads. That will get the girlfriends Yeah! Yeah! The girlfriends. Guys will have to take the girlfriends to concerts, buy tee shirts, buy CD's ,Re buy the CD's when girlfriends loan them to their friends and they get lost. And the Devil smiles as he shines his pitchfork......"We shall call this band CREE."
You can put kittens in the oven, but that don't make 'em biscuits.

DMB
Almost all nu metal/hard rock.. most of the singers can;t even sing in key on stage anymore!! They owe their lives/careers to Pro Tools.
White Stripes-- since when is not being good at your instrument a measire of greatness. That chck drums like my step son! (he's 6!!)
Some this up quick: Puddle of Linkin Roach Korn Nickle etc.....
New Found Blink Power 182 etc.. These singers couldn;t hit a note if it hit them first! Fell bad for Travis Barker though.. he's fuckin awesome
ALmost everything by RHCP
Steve Vai- Malmsteen- etc No emotion their for me

the J LOVES Mother Love Bone - I have Apple, and it is one of my faves - another kickin' tune is Captain Hi-Top - a little silly lyrically, but a cool tune

one tsmall point, tho - Love Bone did not give birth to Soundgarden - Andrew Wood lived with Chris Cornell and Matt Cameron from Soundgarden, and when Wood died, Chris wrote 2 songs about him - Say Hello to Heaven and Reach Down - which he recorded with Matt as well as Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament who were in Love Bone with Andrew - they added Mike McCready on guitar and recorded the Temple of the Dog album (Temple of the Dog was something in a MLB tune, by the way) - on the Temple record, they got Eddie Vedder to do some backups and some lead vocals on Hunger Strike (as everyone here probably knows) - this is I think what you were thinking of, but Soundgarden was already around while MLB was still intact.....

just FYI... and, yes, I know entirely too much about this....Image
