Most under-rated rhythm guitarist?

Post by AllHolLowsEVe »

So I was thinking today about all the guitar heros and shredmasters that I have always idolized, and then I thought about some of the really great rhythm guitarists that tend to be overlooked. So some that have popped into my head today were....

Brad Whitford of Aerosmith
Dean Roland of Collective Soul
Zacky Vengence of Avenged Sevenfold
Izzy Stradlin of Guns N Roses

It would be interesting to see what other's you guys can come up with!
Videos destroyed the vitality of rock and roll. Before that, music said, "Listen to me." Now it says, "Look at me."

I saw Aerosmith back when they were still a metal band :o and Whitford played almost all of the solos. I think Joe Perry was too strung out to play, or he just wasn't interested that night. Whitford is deinitely under-rated.

plus a million one. He keeps the riff machine on course while Angus works the crowd.

Hettfield is pretty damn good too.

I was just discussing this issue about Brad Whitford and Malcolm Young recently and how important their guitar licks and roles are to the songs and overall sound of their respective bands and without them, the songs would not sound as good. A great rhythm player is very valuable and hard to find. These guys also play leads, fills, and harmony licks as well as straight forward rhythm.

There are many bands with dual or triple guitar attacks that have players who take on the alternating role of rhythm player very well such as Thin Lizzy, Scorpions, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Def Leppard, Lynyrd Skynyrd, .38 Special, Molly Hatchet, Kansas, Styx, Allman Brothers, Blackfoot, The Outlaws, The Cars, and Eagles to name a few.

A few other underrated great rhythm players are:

Bryan Adams
Robin Zander
Rick Springfield
John Lennon

Paul Stanley. He had to be ready for Ace Frehley to fall apart at any time.

Hell yeah! Paul Stanley is to KISS as James Hetfield is to Metallica.

Gotta give credit to ANGUS Young and Kirk Hammett. Both are kickass rhythm players live. Angus starts off the groove in every song.

An honorable mention to singers who aimlessly strum an acoustic guitar on every song, even though you never hear a note of it. An unamplified acoustic is the glue that holds every country band together.

Nick Catanese- Dude is amazing, but has to play beside Zakk Wylde, so you pretty much have to expect to be looked over I guess. The more I think about it, Id say the rhythm guitarist is the most underrated person in the band. Keytar players/tambourineplayers/backup singers get noticed more.

And this is just so funny because of the amount of truth in it. I wonder who first thought of using the guitar as a prop? If I were a guitarist, I'd be pissed at these posers.

Anytime the subject arises about the most underrated rhythm guitarist, Malcolm Young gets mentioned.
Well if he is so underrated, how come he is mentioned? I've seen this in magazines before actually.

Not knocking the man's skills at all, just thought it was humorous.
Same thing for James Hetfield. How can he be underrated if he is mentioned all the time.

Just curious, is there a top 10 or top 25 best Rhythm Guitarists list out there? Who are the great rhythm guitarists that are overshadowing these 2 great players?

here's a top ten list.

Hetfield and Young are 1 and 2
so I'd say not underrated.

But, Johnny Ramone is not on there so I say him, and Rudy Schenker.

I personally always thought that Paul Stanley was an over-all better guitarist than Ace.
