Who wouldn't you do a benefit for?

Post by DirtySanchez »

I saw a post in the benefits section that got me thinking.
I know the Humane society does great things for pets, but I'd never support anything they do. The reason is because they are the Nations biggest anti-hunting activists. I don't believe in animal rights, I hunt, fish and eat meat. There were times as a kid, that all we had for dinner was wild game and vegetables we grew. We were working poor which meant we made too much money to get assistance and too poor to afford anything.

I hunt because I enjoy it, but I also eat what I kill. I also practice catch and release 99% of the time when I fish, but if I kill it I keep/eat it.

I didn't start this thread to turn into an anti vs pro argument.
I'd like to know if there are any causes you don't/won't support and why?

Please don't turn this into a hippy vs. redneck flame war.

I don’t think people look into what they are sponsoring. It just sounds good. I applauded you for taking the time to look into the politics behind the Humane Society.

I personally will not have anything to do with the Jaffa now. I learned a lot about the politics in that place and I didn’t like what I saw. Crony capitalism is not something I’m for.

Agreed. There are a lot of "non-profit" groups out there that are formed specifically to make the owners a nice salary more than to help the actual cause.

I personally thing that a lot of the animal rights non-profits are corrupt. I guess that it may just be me. I'm not cruel to animals and love pets, but I grew up on a farm so my personal human/animal views are geared more toward the human aspect.

I still do think that in general... people suck... but I also won't risk crashing my car to save a bunny that runs out onto the highway.
... and then the wheel fell off.

I support the humane society. I eat meat but don't hunt so I am not directly affected by their stand on hunting.

If God didn't want us eating animals, then why de he make them out of meat?

As for a group I would not do a benefit for....
I would not do a benefit for the Young Natzis of America.

I feel roughly the same way, but I don't hunt. I do fish, but I tend to release unless I have a reason to keep them.

I think the humane society does do good overall, even if their love all things furry does interfere with some people's activities. I mean the people who abuse animals or neglect them need someone to hold them accountable and the normal police are just too busy most of the time.

Its one thing to hunt and take down an animal quickly, its a whole other ball of nasty when you starve, torture, or injure an animal for fun, sport, money, or stupidity.

Overall I think if we didn't have hunting in PA, you'd have deer getting hit on the highway a ton more and basically being a more invasive species. Its a shame (to me) to see what would have been put to good use by a hunter, wasted and rotting on the side of the highway.

I will never support Greenpeace, they are the biggest bunch of hypocrites in the friggin' world... While in the Navy stationed out in Pearl Harbor, they would try to get in the way of a nuclear sub, because they were protesting nuclear power... take a guess how many nuclear accidents the Navy has had in all of it's years of operation...ZERO. There was a reactor leak one on occasion, but the quick reaction and proper training it was contained by the crew, and there was no outside contamination of personnel. They put more danger to us by making a 6927 ton boat try to dodge them, and after we got around them, I noticed that their fleet ship (The Rainbow Warrior) has a horrible oil leak, and they were leaving a huge oil slick path where ever they went....morons.
If I ever see an amputee getting hanged... I'm just gonna start yelling out letters...

Don't they kill the animals they can't get rid of? Thats what I was always told, so that would make them HUGE hypocrits. Does anyone know if that is true?

From what I understand, yes, they do. Our local shelter is not a No Kill shelter.
I will give dog/cat/bunny etc food to the humane society to use for the animals that are there, but I don't necessarily support the humane society at all times. I don't agree with much that they do, but I care so much about the animals themselves that I feel I have to do something for the ones that are there.

I would not support any known racist group or any group that has any ties to a racist group of some kind.

I say fuck people. People can help themselves. Animals can't. I'm not talking about wild animals, either. If my dog and a person were bleeding to death and I could only take one for help, a human just died. Big deal. That's my view. Have a nice day.

I'm cool with the humane society, they do a lot of good. PETA on the other hand, is crazy.

We just did a benefit for the Humane Society last week and it was huge, 585 bikes came out. There's a big difference between pets and wild animals.
Im not against hunting but even up the odds a little, chase a deer and see how many you get, or go after a bear with a knife, now thats a fuckin hunter.

we do it for the kids. really.
althougth i have a difficult time with the Salavation Army and other faith based charities because of their view on women's right to choose and homosexuality, i never let that get in the way of helping someone who needs it (as long as the charity or cause is not completely bonkers) especially considering the person you help may or may not share the views of the organization. i always hope we're helping out a child or someone elderly that really needs a break to fall their way, be it medical or financial. that being said, The Embalmed's favorite charities are always Toys for Tots and anything cancer related for obvious reasons. i am in no way an animal person (i can't stand 'em) but i respect and understand why people love and cherish their pets; the point being that i would glady play a show to respect to what someone else holds dear even though i have absolutely no emotional attachment to it.
so what wouldn't i support?

+1000000000000000000000000000

I enjoy benefits, and some of the best gigs I've ever played were benefit gigs. I don't try to have any selfish reasons to play them; I just dig doing them (and as Kevin always says, where are the news cameras when local entertainers do good?). A friend/former professor of mine, who is originally from Florida, commented how cool it is that so many musicians around here do benefits. Apparently from the urbanized areas where she's from, it doesn't really happen all to often. I was kinda taken aback by that comment, as there generally seems to be at least one major benefit happening every month.

Generally, I wouldn't play a benefit if it were for...

- A hate group or any type of group that promotes intolerance or racial or religious superiority. That goes for all groups: I wouldn't play a KKK rally or a a Stormfront.org benefit, but I wouldn't play a Black Panthers benefit either.

- Any overt political benefits, even if I agree with the politics. I generally wince at musicians thinking that their political voice matters more than the general populace. Why should I give a fuck which presidential candidate Madonna supports?

- Any show affiliated with a certain local promoter from the Altoona area. I won't name names out of professionalism.
so what wouldn't i support?
