The LB series is pretty much the standard line that Carvin puts out. I dig my 75 mucho, as is obvious by my last post. The standard pickup in them now are the H50s (a stacked humbucker). Mine came from the days when the J99 (jazz-styled single coil) was standard. I haven't played any Carvins with the HBs in them, but the general thing that I'm told is that they sound good, but they don't sound like the Musicman pickup that they look like. I'll let you know how I dig the soapbars once the Icon gets here.
The 70/75A models look sweet. Here's a photo of a cat's 75A off the Carvin boards.

He says he had to spend some time tweaking it to find the sound he dug, but he seems really happy with it. That's a lot of Maple to tame there! You've probably seen him, but there's also a cat running around Talkbass who has an LB70A with a 2x2 headstock, very cool looking bass!

"He's the electric horseman, you better back off!" - old sKool making a reference to the culturally relevant 1979 film.

I dig natural finishes the most. Stain or dye is fine, clear I can handle, but a natural finish (oil or light matte) makes it all feel 'right'
And it doesn't sound fruity about connection to instruments. I have a bunch of one kind and I'm pretty certain I could tell the difference without looking. The only one that I feel that connection with is the one I always reach for, even if its out in the car and the other are sitting out right there.
I try not to buy any bass without playing it first. There are some that I have done that with, but I never get that feel I get with an instrument I've played and felt good with before I purchased.
Thats the only concern I have with a custom shop guitar. At the point you get to play it, its too late if you don't feel it

Doesn't Carvin have an 11 day return policy on their instruments?JackANSI wrote:I try not to buy any bass without playing it first. There are some that I have done that with, but I never get that feel I get with an instrument I've played and felt good with before I purchased.

I believe they have something of that effect, not sure on the exact day.Thornmoon wrote:Doesn't Carvin have an 11 day return policy on their instruments?JackANSI wrote:I try not to buy any bass without playing it first. What other company would let you return a Custom Shop guitar or bass?
My problem is that when I do find a good canidate that I'm considering, 9 times out of 10 I have to get it ordered in.
And unless I have already played it before I am stuck with purchasing it.
Most places don't carry left handed guitars, so it sucks even more for me.
