~*~A.B.A.T.E. Poker Run~*~
Dmfj already posted this in the shows, but this is an important event. So I'm posting it here too.
July 10, 2004... Saturday!
The Cambria Summit Alliance of Bikers Aimed Towards Education (A.B.A.T.E) is sponsoring aTh Fourth Annual Memorial Poker run. It's in Memory of Chris "Stretch" Hamilton and Dan McDermott. The money raised is going to benefit needy children in the area. This years recipients are Joe Stevens (a heart transplant candidate) and the three children of Rick Driskel (who passed away this past February from complications caused from a garage door accident).
Details:
If you want to be part of the Poker Run, Sign Ups are at the Cresson Italian Club from 10:00am to 11:45am. We leave there at Noon sharp.
This costs $15 a person/$25 a couple. If you can't ride a motorcycle, that's fine. Cars are welcome to join in.
Bar stops are: Hammerjax (Bellwood), Bar53 (Coalport), Clair's (Ashville), VFW (Ashville), Magoo's (Cresson), Schooner (Cresson), Spanky's (Loretto), and Loretto Pub (Loretto).

However, if you didn't, it will be $15 a person at the gate, regaurdless. Price of admission includes all the food you can eat and all the tastey beer beverages you can drink.
Also.. Local live entertainment will be there. They should be starting to play 4 or 5'ish area.

Thanks! You brought up something I forgot! Camping! Since you'll be drinking there, you are welcome to set up tents or stay in your cars over night. Drinking and Driving don't mix. So.. please please please please please... be careful. Have a desig driver.. or stay.
Also.. yes... you can bring in your own alcohol if you don't like beer..but please make sure it's not of the glass variety. We don't want any broken bottles or anything there... safety!

Tell ya what. I'll go take the drive today and write down some visual signs. Off the top of my head, if you're coming via buckhorn/Ashville... stay straight on the road going through Ashville....the road will eventually pause in Chest Springs at a stop sign. If you go right, it will take you towards Patton, if you go left, it will take you towards Loretto, Ebensburg area. Go left... it will be a couple miles passed Hagens on the right.
I'll go for a ride today and get exact mileage from certain areas and try to throw in some big land markers so you know you're on the right way. I'll do it via Altoona route and via Ebs. route. Check back here for posted directions this evening!

JP,
Yeah, Lisa has it fairly accurate.
Head into Chest Springs (from Altoona) on 36. When you get to the weird triangle intersection, stop at the stop sign and then go straight (or left) just don't go right! (36 will continue to the right).
Follow that road about 2 miles.
You will turn off a dirt road on the right to get to the party. Look for signs! Depending on the time you arrive, you may be able to follow some bikes in!!

Hope to see you there though!

Alrighty...so!
My band didn't play because of an injury, but watch out for next year! I give a big salute to Legends of the Lost and Found for doing what they did. It was fantastic. Another member of A.B.A.T.E. said that John singing "Country Boy Can Survive" was so fitting that it was scary. Great job guys. Beyond Reason was smokin' as usual. I love seeing those guys. Totem was freakin' awesome. That was the first time I had heard them play and damn do they sound great. I don't know what the hold up was between Totem and Felix and the Canes but I do know I passed out in my tent listening to them around 3-3:30 in my tent! The Canes sounded awesome (like they always do), but I was too damn tired to hold my eyes open any longer.
I had a blast and can't wait to do it next year.

I had a very good time as well. I was saddened to learn about Legends Of the Lost & Found and Bill Marks' passing; John's tribute to his fallen partner was special and memorable. I thought Beyond Reason, Totem and Felix & the Hurricanes all did very well. I left shortly after 3 AM after the 'Canes went on break - did they do another set?
Echoing Imgrimm, it was my first time at this event - I met lots of cool people, and it's always cool to see a crowd of 400+ without any attitudes or fights. Good music, good food, good brew, good people - parties like this are one of the things that summer should be about!
Thanks again Urbs for hooking me up!

On behalf of myself and all the other members of ABATE, I would personally like to thank those musicians and bands involved with the after party, and the musicians and others that showed up for the Poker Run and Party. Everyone involved helped to make it a success.
On behalf of the recipients, my heart felt thanks and appreciation. Just wait till next year! It too will be intense! Those of you who didn't make it this year, keep your calendars open next year.

That was our 4th time there and it gets better every year. There was a holdup before we went on because Totem took there PA down and we had to do without. But were used to it. Yeah Jim we did do another set and played till about 4:30. Hats off to all who supported it. Next time Big Bob we will do suck apon. my fault, i forgot all about it man.
I'm sorry it took me this long to respond! I left for North Carolina only a few hours after leaving the party and did not have internet access for a week (it was actually a blessing).
Anyway, as President of the Cambria Summit chapter of ABATE I would really like to thank so many of you that showed up.
Bobby Lee, it was great to meet you and am glad you made it a point to find me!! I'm really glad you had a good time!!
JP, as I said at the party, I will keep you in mind when I am involved in events like this one and I am glad that you also had a good time!!
Esa and Jae - Mucho thanks for all the work you guys did at the signup and at the party!! I'm sure you already know how much I appreciate that!! (How much I appreciate all of the help from the ABATE membership!!)
And, especially thanks to everyone who turned up to make this year another successful fund raising event!!
Totem & Felix and the Hurricanes were both awesome (but then again, that is exactly what I would expect.
) I don't think I can even put into words how I felt about Johnny and Karen's tribute to their friend and bandmate Bill Marks (of Legends of the Lost and Found)- it was inspiring! And, of course, I always enjoy my time playing tunes with by brothers in Beyond Reason!! I'm sorry that ESY couldn't make it to play, but these things do happen from time to time. Also, thanks to the folks in Totem for the use of the PA system!!
Thanks Again!!!!!!!
