What is yours?

Mine is "Over and Out" By The Alkaline Trio. Best Lyrics. They make you sad,happy, hopeful, and like you're not alone all at the same time, and the delivery gives me goosebumps. I will listen to this song way too much.

Man, I love Alkaline Trio. I did some sub work two summers ago, and played Burn and Mercy Me. Mercy Me was definitely my favorite song of the night, such a fun and tasteful bass line.

As far as new stuff, I guess it would be One Ton Brick by Hurt, though the single's been out since like spring, I think. I've listened to Hurt long before they got mainstream success and the new stuff is really good.

I've never heard of them, are they a local or signed band?

My song for the summer is an old one actually. It is 38 Special "Caught up in you". I pretty much play it non-stop to and from work and it hasn't gotten old to me yet. Just one of those classic songs that you've heard many times before and then you kind of re-discover it.
It is a great song!

joe...are you serious?

they are a band from chicago...they've been around longer than what most people think. i think their first record was from '98. they started out just being kinda dark punk rock...their sound has really evolved over time though.

I have been playing "Flame Sky" by Carlos Santana and John McLaughlin. It is on the Welcome album made right after Caravanceri, but it has sooo many cheesy songs. But the song "Flame Sky" is just mind blowing, even the keyboard player goes crazy, and I am not too big a keyboard fan.

It is the song the band Flame Sky was inspired by, FYI.

PS----A song is new to me even if it is 35 years old.....I know, stuck in the 70's again.

At the Moment, I love the song "The Feeling" from Kutless, love the way he sings it!
I got to hang out with them at Creation this year, and they were pretty excited about the new Album! I got it and it definitely rocks!

Chad, I didn't think you would like them very much. I bet you'd really dig some of their older lyrics though. Think more intelligently written misfits songs. That's not a dig on the misfits either, as they are my all time favorite band. I kinda figured they were a little too poppy/bubblegummy for you.

"I'm Still Here," by John Hartford. The version I listen to is from a TV show, I think, it's live and sounds midrangey like old TV audio. It starts out extremely Appalachian-sounding, very old-timey, with just John's banjo and vocal. He sings:

Trains are running towards each other
Shotguns are pointed at my head
Tornado clouds are forming o'er the crossroads
H-bombs are falling towards my bed...

But I'm still here
I'm still here, how 'bout that
My city may be falling
But I'm still here

The song was written during his mid-70's progressive phase, and when he says, 'I'm still here, how 'bout that,' it's with a sarcastic sneer of defiance that out-punks any punk song I've ever heard. He was making a statement about how the establishment/media is telling us it's the end of the world, but that he survives and thrives. You'd have to hear it to really feel the tone of it... I just connect with it on a deep level.
As if that wasn't enough, after the lyrics are finished, the band turns it into a hillbilly-jazz-funk-blues experiment that will drop your jaw. Roy Huskey, Jr. plays an upright bass part that will clue you in as to why he was considered the best-ever... soooo tasteful, yet completely improvised, like all his bass lines, he simultaneously sets the rhythm and meanders in and around it like a vine, holding it all together while Hartford sprinkles these obtuse jazz lines all over it with the banjo (no Earl Scruggs-style here). It's at once powerful and defiant, yet artistic and envelope-pushing. The chords and arrangement are dead simple, but just try to nail the song... you'll see why bluegrass is so popular among rock musicians lately.
Oh, I hasten to add... the studio version... ehh, it's okay, but not as good as the live shot... look it up on Youtube, it should be on there.---->JMS

I have also been listening a lot to a CD that came out a couple years ago but this band is finally getiing lots of attention again and re-released an extended version of the CD. They are called Decemberadio and they were picked as one of the best bands to watch. They cover several styles. They had two singles out called Love Found Me and Drifter. Check them out here.
