Your favorite top 5 heaviest slow groove tunes of all time?

Post by Killjingle »

Mine have to be; in this order...

1) Skullcrusher - Overkill (this is a mammoth of a tune; production + great song= #1)

2) Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath (I love Sabbath and this was hard to choose; but if I had to pick one tune to represent them this would still be the one)

3) The Last Judgement - Trouble (hard to find song; these guys had sabbath down to a science.... they cant be higher than Sabbath because B.S. was the first to have this sound)

4) Bridge of Sighs - Robin Trower (I think the best guitar and bass tone ever recorded)

5) War is Coming - Six Feet Under (It just oozes death metal heavy but has a beat that just about anyone can appreciate)

3 honorable mentions:
Slaves and Bulldozers - Soundgarden (Kim Thayil is from another universe)
Walk - Pantera (I always disliked Pantera but this song is HUGE)
U Shook Me - Led Zep

"When The Levee Breaks" Led Zeppelin

"Stranglehold" Ted Nugent

"Too Rolling Stoned" Robin Trower

"Waitin' For The Bus/Jesus Just Left Chicago" ZZ Top

Edit: I didn't list 5 on purpose, for there are so many which had to be left out. Examples: Several SRV Tunes, a couple of Godsmack's, :P :D some Porcupine Tree, Blackfield and a LOT of old Blues.

Next time you come to see The Conniptions, we will play Rumble for you.

Here is another tune to add to the slow grooves list.

Black Hole Sun - Soundgarden
(Peter Frampton's instrumental version is cool too)

I don't know if I could nail down a "top 5", but when the terms "heavy" and "slow groove" are brought up, these came easily to mind;

Sabbath - "Into the Void"

McKinley Morganfield - "Catfish Blues/Rollin' Stone". This song is the basis for much that followed, including both "Voodoo Chile" by Hendrix and "Bridge of Sighs" by Trower - either of which would also be right at home on this list.

Rush - "Witch Hunt". Often overlooked, but one of my faves from them.

Metallica - "The Thing That Should Not Be". Some songs are slower, and some might be "groovier" but this is pure raw heaviness in a way that was fresh for its time.

Mahavishnu Orchestra - "Eternity's Breath pt.1", Johnny Mac & the boys deliver one of the heaviest riffs of all time without ever resorting to excessive sludge.

Other notables: anything by R.L Burnside; anything by Celtic Frost;
anything slower by Pantera, who are arguably the "power groove" masters of our time.

James Brown - The Payback
Fleetwood Mac - Hypnotized
Robin Trower - Spellbound
Steppenwolf - The Pusher
Traffic - Low Spark of High-Heeled Boys
Beatles - I've Got a Feeling
Sly & Family Stone - If You Want Me To Stay (great bass line)
Led Zep - Kashmir
Nightcrawlers - African Echo
Paul Simon - Diamonds on the Souls of Her Shoes
Perpetual Groove - Teakwood Betz
Rolling Stones - Can't You Hear Me Knockin', Monkey Man, and Midnight Rambler (say what you will about these over-played dinosaurs but they did a slow groove well)
Tragically Hip - Grace Too

Ron, you stole my answer with AIC's "Dirt" so how about "The Grind" from Alice in Chains.

Man, what a bad assed tune - I still have this faint recollection of the video for it.
