The PLCB seemed to have done a good job waging its own little war against Johnstown too.RiffRandell wrote:
Oh...the music scene does SUCK in johnstown. it's NOT because there isn't anyone playing it. it's because bar owners and people in general are idiots.

There was an article in the Tribune Democrat about Around The Corner where the PLCB's decision was overturned by a judge.
One thing that hurts ATC is the fact that they wrote a few bad checks for beer. They claim it was a banking error; but Ive heard that before.
They were acknowledged of their effort to keep the noise down. They did make an effort to soundproof the back of the building.

The PLCB cant be blamed for the entire downfall for the Johnstown scene. They have a huge part in it; but there are so many other reasons.
Im gonna call a spade a spade in this case. Long term commitments to entertainment in their establishments has to be acknowledged. Claudio and Aldo have their downfalls and slow seasons, but these guys didnt try to get rich quick and shit all over patrons and bands to get there. I may not have agreed with everything Claudio ever said to me, but at the end of the day he isnt in business to lose money. Neither is Aldo Im sure.
Another club that comes to mind in JT is Westmont Gardens. This is the Aldos on this side of the mountain. It can be freakin fantastic or abysmally slow. A long term commitment on Frank's part has allowed him to succeed. Cant say that about a lot of other places over here.
I think one can see a venue's commitment to entertainment just by the inhouse equipment or stage that is constructed. You can also tell by the lighting situation. Obviously this is not the situation for all clubs, but I think the key for these established guys to weathering the storms is their commitment to entertainment.
When u walk into a place that has clearly projected itself to be an entertainment venue for some time to be; I think a person will then make up their mind that they will be returning in the future if they enjoy themselves.
When I walk into a bar and see a different PA (from 1000 to 15000 watts FOH) every week and a band shoved in a corner or behind a wall with no stage or no unloading zone I have to honestly wonder if that commitment exists. This is my feelings on this matter and obviously its only an opinion, but I think a lot of other ppl would tell u they feel the same way if they were being honest.

I definitely agree with you on this one, Chad. About three years ago, we did two gigs at Westmont Gardens and between the two, we may have had 35 people there. Such often happens to an unknown band in Johnstown - and we knew that going in. Regardless, we were all treated with a lot of respect and were made to feel welcome at The Gardens. Furthermore, we were handed the agreed upon amount of pay at the end of both nights, no questions asked - Rob handed back some of that money to Frank, as IMO, that's always the classy thing to do in these situations. Perhaps we'll have to come back to Westmont Gardens sometime in the future, and give things another try.Killjingle wrote:

Hey Chad...commitment to entertianment...I know of one club where that is bullshit. The "said" club was out to make a quick buck from me, then stab me in the back...now "said" club is trying to take advantage of what I bulit for them and book bands on their own. Said club had no clue or interest in most of the nationals who I had roll through, however, they kissed enough metal band ass and tried gaining enough contacts so when the time came...ahhhh...knife to my back.
Said club is back to what killed them a few years ago...djs and karaoke. So much for trying to be that "original band rock venue" they claimed to be.
If enough people put two and two together, they will figure out who "said" club is. I wish for people to not visit "said" club, because they really didn't give two shits for any original local, original regional, or original national act. They got greedy like so many do...only cared about the quick buck by taking advantage of so many others.
