Drummers

Post by cucuplex96 »

Is it just me or do alot of drummers take pride in their snare drum as far as its overall sound more than the other drums in their set.. I mean really paying attention to the specs of their snare in regards to what the sound is that they like.. some drummers like a deep thunderous snare sound and some like a high crack like a picalo (spellin?) I wonder which is the most appealing to the mass of drummers sometimes. I sometimes wonder what it must be like to be a drummer and liking what you like about it.. I know what i like about guitar.. what kind of strings i like to the tone and overall sound of my amp, and what sound i would like to have verses what i got. It just seems like every drummer has a great sounding snare.. I sometimes sit behind my drummers set and tinker around a little... and they sound like shit... bad... at least when i play them, cause when he gets back there and plays them.. they sound like a totally different set. They sound great when he plays them.. I swear there is some kind of magic between him and his set.. He gave me money to go pick up these Zildjian titanium hi-hats.. and I wonder what drummers opinions are of that series. He bought a zilgjian titanium crash of some sort off my uncle, and our thoughts were that, it must be a tough series because its titanium. He is tough on cymbols, and they are pretty thick compared to some others.. idk.. he got that crash and it sounded pretty good.. and i found a matching pair of high hats and thought ok. since his are cracked. I just hope that maybe we found something that might be hard for him to break.. his playing style is set in stone.. so there is no adapting to save his cymbols, just hopes that we have found a stronger material. Of course all cymbols are thin metal and i think that even tho they are titanium, it is still possible to break them.. our hopes are that it would just be harder to do so. Give me some feedback. that would be helpful

it all depends on the drummer...every drummer has his/her preferences.

i've played many different ways...but i have a way that i prefer.

the titaniums are zildjian zxt's...i had them and broke 'em when i was learning how to play drums.

Personally, I like every aspect of my kit, from cymbals right down to the kick pedal and hardware. I pay very close attention to everything and I try to get the optimum performance out of every item in my kit. It doesn't make sense any other way...at least to me.

I'm a Paiste guy, so I don't know much about the cymbals you mentioned. From the description, I believe that they are a less expensive line of Zildjians and hence, there is a bit of a quality issue.

these seem to be made quite well actually.. there thicker than some of the other hi-hats he has had.. he had this one thick pair of zildjian schimatars.. or something like that.. he had them for 13 years b4 he broke them.. these just seem better. i was just out in the garage tappin on them for like 25 minutes.. hitting them in different spots and hearing all these sweet overtones, some of them even sound like feedback in a way but their real hard to hear.. If you were in the studio recording just what you were doing on these.. you could really get some crazy noises they sound pretty cool. Hey as long as he gets his money out of em and they last him a long time who really cares if they are cheaper than other zildjian sets right. The guy goes thru snare drums like guitar strings.. he got tired of spending few hundred dollars every time he needed a new snare.. so he buys these cheap pulse piccilos for like 40 bucks i think.. he has like 4 or 5 spares laying around cause you never know when you might break some hardware, or bend a rim... or even break a head. haha he's nuts... but i love em... proud to have stood next to him on stage for the last 14 years.... hard on drums but boy can he play em

Zildjian Titaniums fucking suck, they are the most brittle cymbal in the world and will break pretty much instantly, they did for me, and i don't play hard. Titanium is a harder metal, but it has what is called a "high tensile strength", which means it takes a lot of force to break, because it doesn't bend as easily, but because it doesn't bend, it just breaks, in what's called "catastrophic failure". Bronze is the best metal for cymbals because it is malleable, but it still has good tensile strength. Cymbals need to be able to bend and warp to make a good musical tone, and titanium is not a good metal for it period, i'm sorry for his loss. They do have great tone, so if you're going to record with them (and record only) then they're great, but they have serious durability issues. As for which drum is the most important, i spend more time getting a good sound out of my kick than any other, next is my floor tom, but next is my snare, i like a big boomy snare, so i keep mine tuned down rather low and i have a wooden snare for warmth.
If I ever see an amputee getting hanged... I'm just gonna start yelling out letters...

I agree 100 %, but im a zildjian man from way back, my advice on the cymbals is either buy alot of replacements or dont hit em so fuckin hard, costly habit!!!

As far as breaking cymbals goes, part of the blame may be the cymbal and what it's made of, but alot of the time, it's the way the cymbal is struck. Technique is important but unfortunately, is lost on alot of players who just bash the crap out of their gear because they don't know any better. The only solution there is to have deep pockets or learn a little bit about how to strike a cymbal. Cymbals should be struck with a glancing blow, so the force of the impact is spread out and dircted away from the cymbal itself. You'll get all the sound you want from it and prolong its life.

I agree. Your snare sound is phenomenal for the type of metal that you play. I always tell that to whoever is standing next to me at a show.

I used to break a TON of cymbals until I bought Z custom rock crashes. I swear they seem 1/4" thick. I always thought they sounded pretty good also. At least nobody ever said any different.

Same with hats, then I got some A custom hats. I dropped a lot of cash for them, but they were worth ever cent.
