Comedian George Carlin dead at age 71

Post by Mistress_DB »

SANTA MONICA, Calif. - A publicist for George Carlin says the legendary comedian has died of heart failure at a hospital in Santa Monica, Calif.

Jeff Abraham says Carlin went into St. John's Health Center on Sunday afternoon, complaining of chest pain. Carlin died at 5:55 p.m. PDT. He was 71.

Carlin, who had a history of heart trouble, performed as recently as last weekend at the Orleans Casino and Hotel in Las Vegas. It was announced Tuesday that Carlin was being awarded the 11th annual Mark Twain Prize for American Humor.

The dean of counterculture comedians, Carlin constantly pushed the envelop with his jokes, particularly with a routine called "The Seven Words You Can Never Say On TV."

I never realized he was that old.

Without a doubt, my favorite comedian of all time. I watched him from the time I was a little kid in the 60's up to today and always thought he was the best. He was the master and innovator of observational humor and went beyond just telling jokes and funny stories. He was one of those comedians who would make me laugh out loud so hard I would be crying because it was so funny.

George Carlin actually helped me form my views on the environment. He (and I) felt that Mother Nature always wins, and humans are simply one of millions of species. If we were eliminated tomorrow, the world would go on turning, and really very little would change. He once said that humans are egotistical in our idea that we could destroy the planet. I think that's very astute.
I followed Carlin from his days as the Hippy-Dippy Weatherman, and I think he's in a group of less than 5 comedians who ever really impacted our culture. My sympathy to his family and fans.---->JMS

George Carlin was so much more than a comedian. He was a social observer and critic, pointing out the ridiculous and the sublime in ourselves and each other, and getting us to laugh at those very things. As has been said many times today, he not only made us laugh, he made us think. Never has a "comedian" made me laugh harder, or think more deeply.

I don't think I've ever felt worse about the death of someone I never knew.

Listen to this dude Rufus - he knows what he's talking about.

He's one of the best ever, his insight on everything was profound. He thought about things in different ways, outside the box. Always made you think. He will be missed, I couldn't help feeling sad when I heard this news. RIP George...life is just a series of dogs.

I saw Carlin in 1974 or 75, with very good seats, and was able to see him as well as hear his comedy. He was so funny that my friends and I had diaphragm pains the next morning because we were belly laughing so much. We saw the classic "hippie dippie weather man" and "seven dirty words" routine among others and he was exceptionally clean, and almost "G" rated even doing the dirty words routine.

In his most recent HBO appearances, he can't say a sentence without throwing in several F bombs. He is not the same comedian he was in the 60's and 70's, he seemed to get angrier.

My favorite skit of his is the difference between football and baseball. "football has the BLITZ'', "baseball has the bunt" "football sometimes ends in SUDDEN DEATH OVERTIME" "baseball's goal is to be safe and come home"

When I heard the news early this a.m., it was a shock and immediate downer. :( He will be missed.

I remember listening to my friend's 8 track that contained The Seven Words, etc., laughing MAO, and a bit of  when the info was related that who we were listening to and the Hippy Dippy Weather Man were one and the same.

Yep, he basically said, if and/or when conditions get bad enough, Earth will shake the human race off like a dog shakes off fleas and be just fine. He spoke the truth, whether or not we cared to acknowledge it.

Sympathy extended to his family and friends.

I watched "Inside The Actor's Studio" tonight, since they ran the GC interview. What a great program, and what a great man. God is laughing his ass off right now, with another great comedian to go along with Lenny Bruce, Chris Farley, and John Belushi.

RIP, Mr. Carlin. God Bless.
