smoking ban

weren't they supposed to vote yesterday? Did it pass, was it delayed? teh interwebs aren't telling me. Does anyone know?

I know this belongs in the law section, but I'm hoping to get an answer before it gets sent to the section nobody checks...

Yes, it has been passed. I was trying to read it to figure out if a outside smoking section may be provided....can't find a mention of that.

Its now up to Rendell and he will pass it because it protects his private clubs and casinos. He gets a lot of support from those areas.

Nothing has passed yet. The only thing they did yesterday was a committee approved the changes to the billl to present to the state house and senate for vote. There are way too many rules in the proposed bill to make it very confusing. One rule is if over 20% of the annual income a bar makes is from food sales, the entire establishment must be 100% smoke free. That will include most bars that have bands. However, private clubs are exempt and that is going to cause lots of problems for other bar owners who see that as favortism toward private clubs. Other states have included all bars and private clubs in their no smoking laws.

Actually, their are exceptions for bars and taverns. "A dozen exemptions would ensure that smoking can continue at some bars and taverns, portions of casino floors, private clubs and elsewhere."

And also, I guess what you're saying is I am no longer welcome as a club musician? Not that I want to be, but since you're the righteous one...

They should ban praying in churches.

The bill was heavily lobbied by casinos, public health advocates and bars and taverns. Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter wanted his city's ordinance to remain in effect. Catholic priests worried that a smoking ban would kill their bingo games.

Where did I ever claim I was righteous? I'm just pointing out the economic barricade that is going to make things even more difficult for gigging musicians. Many people smoke in clubs. While I believe that the quality of music will always win out, you'd have to be totally blind to believe that a smoking ban won't adversely affect club attendance. My point is that a smoking ban really doesn't affect you negatively; you don't play in clubs. Many of us do, and with sound ordiances, .08 limits, rising gas prices, and other distractions, this is just another nail in the coffin. Sorry if you don't like the truth from my "righteous" side of the fence.

Hell, I don't mind playing non-smoking places. Kind of helps the ol' vocal pipes ya know? That way if I choose to damage them myself I can (which is a dumb name thing to do to myself). I can't blame the smoke in the place for a weak vocal night! And believe me, I am looking for excuses

Anyway, I don't think it will deter people from going out.

I don't smoke and I tend to agree that more people will come out when the smoking ban goes into effect. Especially for a good band. You might lose some of your audience that just happens to be getting shit faced at the bar you are playing at....

I wouldn't mind the indoor smoking ban if it was fair. It really is discriminating against bars who already has to try to compete with private clubs. The private "non-profit" clubs already have many benefits that makes them a profitable entity such as gambling. They make huge amounts of money off of their small game of chances. We have several vets, several moose clubs, the Cro Club, the Morann Club, and more in our area (within 5 miles of us). These clubs will get our customers who smoke.

If we cut way back on our food sales, we can still have smoking. We can only have 20% of our revenue generated by food sales. And this has to be shown on our sales tax reporting. We can also no longer allow any customers under the age of 18 into the bar.

There is no mention in the current law about banning outdoor smoking areas. The law is classified as an "Indoor Smoking Ban" so we are looking at ways that we can provide a nice place in a non-enclosed area such as our deck.

I'm a non-smoker and when I first heard of a smoking ban in Pennsylvania, I welcomed the law. However, as a small business owner, this current law will hurt our business because its not the same law for everyone across the board. We can only hope that we can continue to build loyalty in our current smoking customers while gaining those who would not come out because of the smoke.

This what happens folks when you let government make decisions for you and run our lives. We have too much influence in our lives by the current system. We need to go back to the days of Reagan and allow the people to think for themselves. We need to have faith that individuals will make the right decisions.

Small businesses were hurt bad with the min. wage increases. Bars, taverns and restaurants will be hurt by the discrimination of this law too. Its time that big brother takes a step back and allow the people to decide what is good for them.

If a bar says "Hey, you can smoke in here!" Who's to tell them no. Bar owners didn't purchase these businesses just so they could have their rights stripped away. You don't like that i'm smoking in a bar, go to the City Hotel, they are non smoking. You should know the consequences of your actions, and know that people will be smoking where you are going. The final decision of going there is yours, and no one elses. No one is holding you at gunpoint and saying "YOU MUST GO TO THIS BAR!!!!". Fucking retards run this world, i swear.

There's never been a law that says that a club owner (Dave at Zenos, for instance) can't make their club non-smoking.
