Obviously, optimally during soundcheck.
I was going to say the same thing. I try to step off the stage before we play just so I can hear what it sounds like on the floor. There are only a couple of soundguys that I can trust to work with what we do, so I have to do this a lot.

As for personal pet peeves, guitar players with modeling amps who have them set to sound awesome in their bedroom and then bring them to gigs and just crank those settings to ear bleeding levels and expect it to sound awesome.

I have issues with guitar players with killer tube amps who then run a Boss processor on the floor as their main tone.

I also have issue with guitar players who don't realize that tube amps do need to be turned up a bit to really get the benefit of tubes.

Why do some bass players feel the need to crank the lowest EQ setting on their amp and then expect definition?

I can't stand drummers who don't hit their drums and then complain that they can't hear said drums that they are barely touching. I'm not saying that everyone needs to attack the drumset, but drums do tend to sound best when they are hit with a little authority.

That's totally fine. There's nothing wrong with using whatever you need to get the effects you want. 8)

Sold the 7-String? Dang. Was looking forward to trying to find a
song applicable. Guess you got a motorcycle, eh...or the GenzBenz?

def would be appropriate to say

This is a delicate subject for sure. I have ran sound a lot and can really see the problems when a tube amp is ran too damn loud. Kyle and I always bitched about it.

But being the guitarist it is hard when the amp isnt hitting correctly. A 50 watt head is prob the easiest solution but usually doesnt have the technology instilled into like its big brother in many amp lines. A Dual Rec and Single Rec are not that comparable in tone. The Engl brothers are not comparable either.

I hate it when I'm in a drive through, ready to give my order and I'm not quite able to talk into the receiver because the person in front of me is about a car length away from the person in front of them. If they would just move up to where they should be, everything would be hunky dorey and I could get my McProduct quickly and safely.

This is exactly why I stay on the good side of those late-night Sheetz workers everywhere we go. Keep their spittle to a minimum and you have a more
secure feeling.

I'd like to add to yours and reflect on the fact that most PA systems are SOUND REINFORCEMENT. They are not weapons with which you should seek to destroy your audience with a barrage of kick drum and mud bass.

In life, in music, at work - pretty much in general - my biggest pet peves are actually very similar...

1. People who do not take responsibility when things are completely their fault, or even partially their fault
2. People who cannot have civil discussions with anyone that doesn't agree with their thoughs exactly.
3. People who voluntarily suck snot or cough up phlem excessively in a public eating place *

* #3 doesn't really carry the same seriousness of #1 and #2, but I run into it weekly at my favorite Chinese resteraunt and I just want to punch that disgusting f-ing bastard in the throat...

Thank you ... I'm glad that I'm not the only person disgusted by phlem and all the wonderful sounds that come with it while I'm trying to eat.

My co-worker always complains about using the restroom at work to have another guy in there blowing his nose directly into his bare hands. Even though he washes them afterwards, its just not right. We are thinking its a culture thing.

thank god they're not all this way but...

...........can't stand female companions that think playing in a band or going to play a show is like going to an Altoona Curve game or something...you make plans of going then at the last minute starts throwing a temper tantrum because you can't call an hour before to cancel because she wants to do soemthing else...haha doesn't work that way.

Things that were made clear to my wife when we first started dating:

I hunt, I fish, and I ROCK the fuck out.
I bust my ass at work and make sure my bills are paid and my home is taken care of. She is more than welcome to do any of these things with me and actually I love to go fishing with her. (Kinda glad she doesn't like to hunt, she's an excellent shot and would prolly show me up. lol)
When I literally had nothing, and things were looking the darkest, I always had my music. When my dad and I couldn't see eye to eye about anything we could still pack up the truck and go hunting or fishing and our differences seemed to just disappear. She respects that these things are my passions and supports me even when it interferes with something "more fun". I have an amazing wife.
She also doesn't try to tell me what to do with my music. Which is def. a pet peeve of mine.

That is totally signature quote material right there.

God bless all of the significant others out there who support their musician boyfriends, girlfriends, husbands, and wives and stay out of band affairs. I've seen lots of good bands break up and lots of good musicians walk away from their respective instruments because of significant others.

I'm not a contolling person, so I'm not going to tell a significant other what she can and can't do, and by the same taken, I always make it clear that if she has a problem with me being a musician, then she's going to be pounding pavement.

Reading this reminds me of another pet-peeve I have - Multi-show bands where a band takes forever to set up. We had a Saturday off the other week, so I went out to a local venue with some friends. One of the bands - and I shit you not - took longer to set up than it took them to play their set. Now they weren't running electronic drums or Bradshaw switching systems on the guitars or anything like. It was just simple heads into cabs. Total lack of professionalism! Seriously, why does it take this long to set up when you already have a house PA waiting for you? Craziness.
+1 Paul, agreed! Waiting that long for a band that should still be figuring out how to take the ends of the cord and slipping it into a jack, I wondered if I should've been running up on stage and helping them or something. Let me take another one up, since we're mentioning that night...
Killjingle wrote:out of tune instruments!!!!!!!!!!!!!! tune ur drums and your guitars...
Adding to what Paul said, not only were those guys VERY slow to set up, but they were so far out of tune that every note that wasn't played on the low string made me want to go nuts and jump on stage as Edward Scissorhands! Seriously, either tune up WITH THE BAND (which in the case in point would've just been pointless to even let them play), or go buy a tuner if you plan on being on stage soon! Even a cheapass $20 tuner is fine!

Lemme add a couple more...

-People who say they wanna play in a band and never show up, or show up drunk or high and can't play worth a shit because you've done too much. If you're gonna smoke up or drink up, cool! Have fun, I have no problem with any of that! But if you join a band, at least tell me if you change your mind cos whatever else is "more important". I gave 2 such instances MORE than enough chances, and I got sick of it. I guess that's part of the problem finding musicians sometimes...

-People who want to learn it, then don't*. I've seen plenty of people pick up a guitar or drums, play for 2 odd months, learn 2.7 chords, then put it down. Believe me... If I've got the time, I'd LOVE to give people a couple pointers, even if I can only play 2.8 chords! Actually, I think my brother falls under this category... Haha!

*This is obviously not aimed at my roommate, who I feel is a very aspiring, and amazing musician in her own right. Kudos to her, and her trying to collect my ass up and put it together using a spatula, a fair house that still needs a kick in the nuts, and a couple nutty-assed cats (one of which I still think is a bird dog for the curious chirping, and constant licking). Thanks!

-Vocalists who just sit/stand there between songs. It's moderately annoying. Of course I'm not gonna bitch much about this one, because A) I'm not up there myself so I don't know what's goin on through their heads (and anyway, I probably won't be much better), and B) I usually give benefit of the doubt, leaning more towards inexperience. But, just say something to the crowd here and there, we won't kill you for it

-Everyone running out the door as soon as the first band gets off stage. I've seen several times where the crowd loses like 10-15 people after the first act. Ok, this one's more bitchy than usual, and another fan perspective actually, but Hell... You paid the cover. You might as well just relax and see if there MIGHT be something else you'd enjoy. Just because the next act isn't "your band" doesn't mean you've gotta be shoved up their asses and leave the second they finish tearing down. Sit back, grab somethin cold to drink and open your mind up a little. I've seen a couple bands that bring their groupies, then watch as they all leave and just shook my head as I prepared for whatever was next on the bill
