Post by tornandfrayed »

I was having a conversation with my 12 year old daughter and she said "Isn't it weird that the only kinds of original bands around here are Metal bands?" I felt a little bad because I immediately assumed that she believed that because I had only exposed her to metal bands. Then in thinking about it I started to wonder how many different styles are represented here on Rockpage?

Can you "represent" and indicate your genre?

Not trying to be a dick here guys. But how do you do ORIGINAL music from the 60's 70's 80's etc. ? It's 2008. If you are playing ORIGINAL music styled after those golden decades i see, but if not you're playing covers, amirite? :?

Wait...

There are other types of music than metal? When did this happen?

BTW the Marauders are probably one of my favorite bands of all time. Chris is a wicked bassist and one of the original people who sent me down the path of that instrument. Go see them if you can.

The Flame Sky band has many varied originals and I guess the best description could be a kind of fusion of heavy jazz and rock. Some have called it doom jazz.

So what's the point? I don't get it. You just kind of went in a circle there, DS. Many folks write original music styled after other music. Metal does it too. I seriously don't get the point of that post, since you answered your own question.

But I agree, there is more original stuff out there than metal. I know (like Hawk said) that The Hurricanes are working on their third full album. Also, Chris V & The Stanley Street Band have some really hip original stuff going on. Dustin Burley has a ton of original acoustic music he's doing.

There's original folks, original metal, original punk, original country, original goth, original rap, original head music, etc...

It's out there for the finding if you look hard enough.

********POINTALERT****POINTALERT**********POINTALERT******

My point was I really didn't know if they were playing 80's metal (Metal from the 80's), or Metal that was written in the 21st century styled after 80's metal. (Which IMO cannot be called EIGHTIES???)
The one dude said "FROM the 60's,70's etc) That bands been around awhile huh? Guess that's what happens when I ask a question, and yeah I took a STAB at answering it myself. (Guess I nailed it lol)
Jesus Christ, you give me a white guilt like feeling for speaking about originals sometimes.

The Basement Alcoholics COVER lots of punk bands, and even the Dixie chicks. There. Am I redeemed now? Just because they're originals doesn't mean they're GOOD. Now I have to be accepted. You bust my balls everytime I say a thing about og music. Go write something, so you lose that complex homie.

Now come on guys, don't fight. If you are angry take it to the streets and let's get this Country of ours back!

There is no problem with original vs covers here. I was asking about the genres to see who is actually on this page that belongs to a band that plays a different genre. It surprises me that there are not more people from say country, pop, blues, etc. See?

We have more to be angry about then the age old "covers vs originals" thing, but God forbid I don't want to muddy the intellectual content of Rockpage with Politics, it has nothing to do with us musicians anyway.....

Oh, I thought this was about original music. My bad. Not fighting, don't care who plays what. Just pissed about gettin my balls busted for asking a question I was kinda foggy on. Some people seem to think I hate on cover bands and I think they have no talent because I write my own stuff. Whatever. FREEBIRD!!!

Post by tornandfrayed »

Dude anyone who has ever talked to you knows that is not true, if someone who has never met you calls you out on stupid shit who cares?

I know that you do a lot of good shit and are very involved on a lot of different levels here in the local scene. I was talking about original bands cause you know me I don't really give a rats ass one way or the other about bar bands.

But most of the guys on here are in bar bands so they need to represent also, they deserve a voice. That was my bad for excluding them.

So continue...

And Brian, fucking eh! People love you on here man!

Now that might not be the same for some others.....

I wasn't trying to fight, or start anything. I seriously didn't understand the question, and it seemed to me that the answer was provided in the question, that's all. It made my head hurt trying to understand it. *shrugs* Sorry.

Thanks for the shout Bill.Progressive lounge Metal. It's true i do overplay i know,i know.
Mostly i just like to write things that put a smile on my face and affords me a few bars to whip out the 6 licks that i have .That's it period. If other cats dig it cool. We're hoping to book some studio time soon to share this music with others.
I don't make it out alot but i always make a point to follow links and check out everybodies offerings. It seems to me even on this little forum that we've got going here the talent is in abundance. Being an OG cat myself i say hell yeah to the cats who lay it out there to have it judged and take the stones when they fly.
