question about bass strings..

Post by EyesOfAnguishbassist »

I play in a metal band, have a 4 string fender mexican j bass and we tune to drop B. I know thicker strings are preferred for lower tunings so what would some of you guys suggest would be best for me to buy? Thanks for any suggestions!

I would go for a .125 or larger string for the low B. That's what I use for the low B on my five strings. Trying to tune down an E string is just going to make it sound floppy and fret out. You'll probably have to widen the nut slot and get a professional setup as you'll definitely need to tweak the intonation and truss rod.

As far as brands - That's personal preference, but I bet a set of Dean Markley Blue Steels would slam! 8)

I'd get a 5 string set and chuck the G string. You will almost certainly have to get the nut slots widened, as paul suggested.
Stand back, I like to rock out.
