Can you think of a song that's a rip off of another song?

Post by CCdrums »

I'm not talking about sampling and stuff like that, just the general outline or structure of the song. The first one that comes to mind:

"Freebird" - Lynrd Skynrd......"Highway Song" - Blackfoot

It just seems like the guys in Blackfoot said "OK, Skynrd had a huge hit with Freebird, lets copy the song format exactly and just change the words around a little bit and we could have a hit too!"

Talk Dirty To Me (Poison) is said to be a rip off of She's Tight (Cheap Trick).
The person below me enjoys a good spanking.

Green Day keeps ripping themselves off. They should probably sue.

"Keep Away" by Godsmack is a blatant rip off of "Hey Man, Nice Shot" by Filter.

Of course, just about every song Godsmack writes is a rip off. When you're band's name is based on an Alice in Chains song and you have a song named after another band ("Bad Religion"), what hope is there for you anyway?

Well, there are probably a bazillion songs that are in a 12 bar format. Let's not also forget everyone's favorite ballad format, the I - vi - IV - V progression. I think every doo-wop song in existence has that progression for either a verse, chorus, or bridge.

• The bass line in "Comedown" by Bush is a compelte rip-off of Bon Jovi's "Livin' O A Prayer."

• Chris Daughtrey's first song (can't remember the name) was almost an exact replication of Fuel's "Hemmorhage in my Hands," ironically, the band that offered him a deal to front their band. You can actually sing the verses to "Hemmorhage" right along with it.

Putz.

Black dog gay?....Wow, if that is considered gay by todays young musicians, I guess I'm out of touch and turning into my dad. I always thought gay was KC and the sunshine band or Air Supply...not Zeppelin and Black dog! Arrrggghhh.......

Yes but the entire idea of ripping yourself off is ripped off of ACDC who've been doing it pretty much their entire career.

Listen to a bunch of Jeff Beck Group and Zep stuff side-by-side.
It's like they were trying to outdo each other with similar songs.

Both were great...one just proved greater.

Also Papa Roach's Last Resort is the exact chord progression as Green Day's Brain Stew I think the name of the song is, i have to admit, i'm not really a fan of greenday, but it even has the same pauses and everything

Hahaha, anything by AC/DC sounds like a rip off of AC/DC.
By only using 3 chords and writing hundreds of songs it is hard not to come up with different combinations. The drums all sound the same to me also.

And Godsmack sounding like Alice in Chains. I always thought Godsmack sounded better when they called themselves Alice in Chains.

But yeah there's so many songs and only 12 notes.

I am with you there,....but...Robert Plant did prance around on stage wearing young girl's blouses 2 sizes too small for him singing about fairies in the hedgerow. He did have kind of a girlish voice.

I can remember a drunk one night asking RickW to "Play some chords we haven't heard before". Rick replied "You've already heard all of them". :D

I'm a believer that 90% of songs you write are parts of other songs you've heard before.
... and then the wheel fell off.

I always thought Sweet Home Alabama and Werewolves of London sounded a lot alike.
