In addition to some of my favorites that have already been mentioned (Godz, Heep, Riot, Montrose, Dolls, Face Dancer, Starz ...) I'll add:

Legs Diamond
Mott the Hoople
Diamond Reo (Pittsburgh)
Artful Dodger
Hustler
Yesterday & Today (much different than their 80s work as Y&T)
Loosely Tight
Dictators

A couple more names I'll float out there...

THE ANGELS/ANGEL CITY. Also from Down Under, The Angels had to change their name to Angel City when they came over to America to avoid confusion with the D.C. glam band Angel (another band that could arguably be on the list!). They also did Aussie raunch rock with a slightly punkier twist. I always liked singer Doc Neeson's paranoid singing style; he was having some serious health problems in recent years.

FRANK MARINO & MAHOGANY RUSH. The legend had it that while Frank Marino was in a coma in the early 70's, that the spirit of Jimi Hendrix had taken him over, explaining his Hendrix-like sound. (Marino denies that myth.) My favorite album of theirs was their Live album which came out in '78. Frank and the current edition of Mahogany Rush played the Sterling Hotel in Allentown a couple of years ago; I heard they were fantastic!
I got turned on to Angel City back in the late 70's. We used to do 3 songs by them and they still go over. Take a long line/Marseilles, I ain't the one, I can't shake it. They reminded me alot of AC/DC. I saw Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush at St. Francis with the Guess Who. I don't really remember it much, just a guy with super long hair playing guitar in a strobe light. I'm sure they were good though.

Traffic

The only cover I have ever heard of any of these 3 bands was some Traffic being played by The House Band who did among others, Low Spark of the High Heeled Boys and another band locally who broke up used to do Light Up and Leave Me Alone. I have never heard any local band cover WA or TYA.
I was in a band in the mid 70's that did the Wishbone Ash song, "Throw Down The Sword"

Pat Travers is one of my favorites

Here are a couple more good ones.

Two more:

BROWNSVILLE STATION. No, Crue fans, Motley Crue didn't invent "Smokin' in the Boys Room." The late Cub Koda and Brownsville Station created that classic, and had a string of good rowdy rock'n'roll singles in the early 70's. Singer/guitarist Cub Koda passed away from kidney failure in 2000. Guitarist Michael Lutz more recently was a member of Ted Nugent's band. One album I still need for my collection is Brownsville Station's self-titled 1977 album, with the "All Night Album Rock" classic "Martian Boogie" on it. Anybody have a copy?

SLADE. And likewise, Quiet Riot didn't invent "Cum on Feel the Noize" or "Mama Weer All Crazee Now;" those songs were Slade creations from the early 70's. In fact, even Quiet Riot's best-known non-Slade hit, "Metal Health (Bang Your Head)" owes some homage to Slade, as Slade's fans are often credited with inventing the tradition of "headbanging;" they used to thrash their heads in front of the stage during the group's shows in English pubs in the early 70's. Slade's Slayed? album was the first record album I ever won from a radio station!

Slade was awesome, best name for a front man in a rock band "Noddy Holder".

I can't believe I left out Starz! GOOD SAVE!! I have Violation, Attention Shoppers and Coliseum Rock on vinyl. I have the last two on CD. Amazing vocals and guitar work. Their singer, Michael Lee Smith, is the younger brother of Rex Smith. When Rex had is own band in their early days (REX), Orville Davis was their bass player. OD ended up playing w/Starz.

Yep. They were great. "Bang a Gong", "Jeepster", many others. For
dying so young Marc Bolan had a huge influence on several later genres.

Since many better known bands/performers are coming up:

Bowie
ELP
FLOYD!

Also,...Deep Purple, anyone?

Lotta others. Marshall Tucker Band, B.O.C., Jethro Tull, etc. OH! Hawkwind!

Just dawned on me that I was listening to one of the not-so-known best
albums on the way in this morning. Marquee Moon by Television.
