The Central PA Percussion Society - SUNDAY APRIL 13th
The Central PA Percussion Society - SUNDAY APRIL 13th
EDITED : 4/2/08
Sunday April 13th
2:00 PM
Bring a drum pad if you have one. Bring an extra one if you have one to help out.
PLease See my post at the top of page two for an update.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Alright, I was just trying to come up with a better name than "Drum Night".
Give it a shot yourself.
LET'S HAVE A CPPS SESSION SOON !
We have a facility to do it now, thanks to Ed Ford at Ford Music Store.
Altoona, PA.
Let's try a poll first.
What day works best for you ? What time works best for you ?
Saturday ?
Sunday ?
Weeknight ?
We can do different days and times so as to accommodate as many drummers as possible.
If you have never been to one, see the Jim Price write up in the PA Musician .
What you'll find is just a group of drummers with a passion to share ideas , to teach a little and to learn a lot, and to leave inspired. You can be a new student or an expert . No one has an ego problem.
Sometimes we check out videos, play some, discuss tuning, discuss technique, anything and everything related to percussion.
Post your ideas and answer the poll.
Thanks,
The "Drum Night" gang.

I've always wanted to go to one of these. Thanks for the initiative Hawk.
Ideas:
1. First _____ of the month. Easy to remember.
2. Sundays after 1pm and or a Mon-Wed evening. Most likely non-gig times.
3. Occassionaly held some place other than Altoona.
4. Gear swapping.
5. Maybe a "theme"? I dunno, maybe not a good idea, just a thought

Hawk,
I love that name, and would be proud to be part of it.
Personally, I love my time doing absolutely nothing on Sundays (recharge for the upcoming week).
Maybe just try scheduling on different days/nights and see what happens?
It's always tough to schedule anything nowadays.

We could do a blues night, jazz night, rock night....pick a rudiment and jam out to it. You get the idea, we could do work on solid timing night. There are a ton of things we could go over. The only thing we need to do really is organize it, so it's not just a goof off session. We really want it to be about substance.

Somethin that makes me wonder... Is this gonna be available for the occasional other musician to drop into? I was considering comin to see what the fuzz is about. But then I don't have a good excuse to play spy games unless my band's drummer decided she wants to stop in... Which she does
Besides... I wouldn't mind learning at least some basic drumming technique

Ha ha! I don't think there is a secret handshake sort of thing or anything worth "spying" on.Naga wrote:Somethin that makes me wonder... I've never been to one so I can't really say. I thought they were get togethers with drummers to talk shop, play a little, learn a little and generally have a good friendly time. Is it more than that? Like do we have to do homework and stuff?
Rob, I had to chuckle about "work on solid timing night". What do you mean by substance? Im not sure I take myself that seriously.....especially when hanging out with a bunch of drummers

We've been doing these for a few years. Sometimes five or six show up, we've had probably as many as 25 - 30 show up when we used to do it at Tyrone High School.nightcrawler_steve wrote:Ha ha! They tend to run in no particular direction and in many directions. (Drummers, go figure.) So if we have 5-6 it works out well. But when we have more than that, it can get chaotic. One time four people brought a kit . Soon we had four kits going at once. Good thing I had ear plugs.
We do hang out, laugh, and have a good time talking shop and playing(usually to share an idea).
I know what Rob was thinking. To loosely have a few get togethers with a theme to focus on. For instance I mentioned to RandyDrummer that I'd like to know more about the Blues. He said, "No problem, I'll show you some things". So if we end up with a large group, we can focus a bit on one thing.
Each time we have had one, they have taken on a form of their own. Some have been extremely inspiring. I do guarantee, no matter what your level is (novice to pro) you will feel comfortable the first time, and you will leave wanting to go home and try something you picked up from someone else !
Secret Knock : Paradiddles with proper accents but written in triplet form. Just kidding. This was an idea we picked up at a Donati Clinic. And none of us could do it the first time. Tap your foot on the first of every three beats. Try going back and forth between 1/16 notes and triplets. It can sound good orchestrated on a kit for a fill.
No, you don't have to know rudiments. You don't need to be able to read music. We will teach you if you're interested, but all you need to show up with is a love for drums and drumming. If you like to hit things with two sticks, you'll fit in.
Jim Price was the first non drummer to come along. Jim if you are reading this thread perhaps you can give your perspective on the subject.

CPPS
Yeah, it's time to get this rolling.... pun intended. I like the "secret knock speeding up" joke. Secret handshakes are difficult to do with sticks in your hands. Don't worry about The Man... Drummers ARE "the man"... or so we like to tell ourselves...
Sundays work best for me, but I'm willing to work stuff out. My wife and I both teach some lessons weeknights.
I propose a "chops session" for the first meeting of the new CPPS. Everyone brings a pad (keeps volume low enough to talk and get to know each other). We bring some recorded music, put on a song for tempo, pick a rudiment, and go for it. Change song, change rudiment. Very simple. Then we can discuss what kinds of topics we'd be interested in working on so we can put together an interesting and informative session for the next meeting.
Something else to think about: If you're willing to drive to Williamsport: The Bullfrog Brewery does a jazz brunch workshop every Sunday from 12-4. You can sit in, hone your jazz skills and enjoy some good microbrews. We could carpool if interested. MAybe even a trip to Dale's sometime?
