Happy fifth anniversary, "Shock and Awe"...

Post by Barfight »

ITT (that's "In this thread" for all those joining us from Nebraska) we discuss the process of dropping bombs "the size of Volkswagens" onto a sovereign nation in the name of "Winning Hearts and Minds".

do it up.

I'm shocked and awed that it's still going on.

War is Big Monies. The economy would just be sucked into a void if the War Machine came to a screeching halt!

I was just whipping a pan of lasagna and thinking(Yes it happens sometimes...) Where is all the anti-war music? Can someone name me a few songs from this generation?

During My Gennnerrration...(Hope I die before I get old... Didn't happen Damn!) There was plenty to be said in the music about the government and war especially after it being drawn out like it has been.

Anyway it won't end with "W" and the way the news and music are censored it could continue endlessly. I bet we roll into another desert or jungle when this one is over!

one of the most aggressive anti-war songs of this generation would have to be "Warhead" by Otep.

Anti-War songs are everywhere... but they're more subtle this time around, because of the 'backlash' that seems to come shortly after releasing media opposing the war...

Smile Empty Soul has a good anti-war song in "This is War"

just a few examples.

Strangely enough, it seems most of the anti-war music is coming from the older generation rockers, not the younger ones.

Probably the closest thing to an anti-war song getting airplay right now is the Eagles' "Long Road Out of Eden," which references the war and our society's greed and complacency. John Fogerty, Neil Young, and even Rush have put out songs recently that reference either the war or our messed-up world to varying degrees.

The Dixie Chicks got their fingers slapped for opening their mouths.

Way back when it was top 40 music anti war songs... Now it's more important to see who survives Survivor Island or if Brittany gets her kids to visit or the next teen idol. The media focuses on so much bullshit these days.

I know there was a Rock for the Troops which was cool but are there any plans for an anti-war concert from anyone?

I suppose that the only really political mainstream band from my generation is Rage Against the Machine, but it's hard to swallow songs about how great Marxism is when the people who wrote them are selling millions of albums. :? They still have one of my all-time favorite lyrics, though: "So I'm rollin' down Rodeo with a shotgun. These people ain't seen a brown-skinned man since their grandparents bought one." :D

There have been songs that have come out recently that allude to the war in Iraq and Bushy but don't call them out specifically (e.g., "Holiday" by Green Day and "Megalomaniac" by Incubus). Actually, it's probably a wise move for bands not to write songs about this clusterfuck of a war, because it would be so easy and passe' to do that.

I still remember being a young 'un and never knowing what Fortunate Son was about, but I always thought it was one of CCR's coolest songs (yes, I used an acroynm!). When I got older and understood its meaning, I came to realize that it's probably one of the most angry songs I've ever heard in my life. Even after listening to everything from the heavier side of the music spectrum, I still consider Fortunate Son to be one of the most angry rock songs ever written.

that is a good point. and it's been said about ratm since they have been around.

their views on censorship are right on though. that's something you can't deny.

exactly. rage (along with a few other socially conscious bands) brought those views to the mainstream years ago and now that it's economically viable for a band to do it, they will capitalize. i can understand how that looks hypocritical.

for the record...green day is still good. they haven't changed their sound all that much BUT, the concept of American Idiot came out of nowhere.

Quit listening to the shit they feed you on the radio.
This is why I love Punk Rock and can't stand Hinderback fratboy rock.

BAD RELIGION LYRICS

"The Empire Strikes First"

We strike first
And we're unrehearsed
Here we go again
To stage the greatest show on heaven and earth
Come on, get your money's worth

Don't wanna live
(can't live)
Don't wanna give
(can't give)
Don't wanna be
(won't be)
E-M-P-I-R-E
Don't wanna live
Don't wanna be
E-M-P-I-R-E

We're comin on fast
And we're built to last
We stumbled once in 'Nam
Now we're glad to finally say
Those days have passed
Tell me how long can it last!

Don't wanna live
(can't live)
Don't wanna give
(can't give)
Don't wanna be
(won't be)
E-M-P-I-R-E
Don't wanna live
Don't wanna be
E-M-P-I-R-E

We just started out
You don't need to be afraid
Yeah you deserve two minutes hate

Well, we spit and we cursed and our bleeding hearts burst
But even ten million souls
Marching in February couldn't stop the worst,
Couldn't reverse

Don't wanna live
Don't wanna give
Don't wanna be
E-M-P-I-R-E
Don't wanna live
Don't wanna be
E-M-P-I-R-E

I can't live
If it isn't with you
"You are now either a clueless inbred brownshirt Teabagger, or a babykilling hippie Marxist on welfare."-Songsmith
