i believe every instrument should be pushed to the limit, if all musicians stayed between the lines just think what music would be like(probably like we built this city by starship  ) obviously that guy at the music store is a very close minded individual and his brain can only handle one busy instrument at a time, actually the same exact thing happend when matt& i were playing out this guy was trying to tell matt to just play the basic notes and leave the creativity up to the vocals and guitar solos..$@&% that maaaaan!!! what is wrong with people  sorry music to me is art and each artist should express themselves however they want now if they suck thats a different story then maybe they should play basic notes, i love hearing a kick ass bass solo and busy bass parts like rush and primus same goes for any instrument, keys, drums etc. of course theres a time and place for certain parts and the thing that makes agreat band like rush, is being able to bring three very busy instruments together to form perfect harmony and rythm, another point i noticed is that the more artistic or complex a band is the crowds seem to be mostly musicians and a few die hard music lovers, then you go to see a band thats all hooks and looks and theres 500 women screaming

What can I say that hasn't already been said. Reading this thread makes me feel important and happy about being a bassist. That music store clerk would bow down to Mr. John Myung and a thousand other bassists if he ever saw them play. I am sorry to hear that a "musically-credible dude" is stuck in such a little box like that. I would hate to hear what he has to say about multi-string bassists!

I'm a guitar player... and I know most of you guys will cite classic rock, but take a listen to just about any RANCID song & if you still think bass shouldn't play solos or anything complicated, or if you think he doesn't use a pick... you're absolutely nuts.

I love hearing Duff McKagan play bass, all of you probably love Cliff Burton, hell, even Fat Mike from NOFX does some stuff that puts me in awe... like "The Idiots Have Taken Over".
