WTF does WTAJ have against Claudio?!?

Post by BDR »

You know, I can understand when there is gunfire at an establishment, the need to splash somebody's place of business all over everyone's TV screeens, but Jesus H. Christ, I'm watching the morning retards on 10 this morning and there's a "late-breaking" report concerning a liquor law violation (serving someone underage) at 30 Something, complete with exterior shots of the business — including Claudio's new signage and new name. The hard-hitting story wraps with news of the whopping $1,000 fine (whopping to Claudio I'm sure, small when prioritizing news stories for the morning report) being assessed by the PLCB for the violation that occurred last year. They sold the story as something that's just happening which is misleading.

Now, I know and agree that a bar should be fined if they break the rules, intentionally or otherwise (I'd bet this was an unintentional thing and more than likely a PLCB set up), but come on, TV10, I realize it's Monday and the weather wasn't really bad enough over the weekend to fill the morning report with crashes, death and destruction, but is it really neccessary to do whatever is possible to ruin someone's livelihood, especially when the guy's doing everything he can to rebuild the reputation of the establishment? A $1,000 fine is commonplace around here, not a huge deal and IMHO NOT an earth-shattering news item that needs to run as one of your lead stories for crissake.

This type of irresponsible reporting pisses me off. Fü©k WTAJ. Fü©k 'em in the ass.

you mean they couldn't have just done a "big ol fish" segment instead?

probably would've pulled more ratings.

I know that about a year or so ago, the PLCB was sending a decoy around that had a faked ID containing an "Under 21 until XX/XX/XXX" field that would have indicated the person was 21, but their birthday indicated that they were under 21...or something like that. Anyhoo, I know a couple Altoona bars got hit with the violation. Wonder if that's what the story's about.

Of course, Rob and I both know all too well about the unethical and down right shitty journalism that goes on in a few of these local television news outlets. Things like reporting that you haven't spoken with a source even though you did the day before it was reported and using connotative language to imply integrity problems. ;)

It was in the Altoona Mirror. 52 out of 102 were caught serving a minor, in a "sting" operation. Why did WTAJ have to pound on Cladio when he was one out of fifty two ?

TV-10...Live, Local, Laughable...

This is the same type of sensational crap they pulled last St. Patty's Day when somebody caught "exclusive video" on his cell phone of a skirmish by the door at the end of the night at Aldo's, and it became the Dime's second lead story on the 5 PM newscast. But nary a TV-10 camera was present a few weeks later when Aldo's staged two benefit concerts (the Jeff Wallack benefit and the Callum Robbins benefit).

It's not the first time The Dime has pulled this stunt with Claudio. Back in the early 90's when somebody got struck and killed in front of the place, The Dime's report showed the venue, even though it turned out the victim was refused entrance that night and didn't get served there. Showing the venue implied that the victim had been served there prior to getting hit.

We ought to drop some flyers at the Dime about the upcoming Rockpage Jam benefit for Steve McCulley, and see if they are as adamant about covering a positive event happening there...

Its sad that this countrys media, newspapers, magazines that sell the most are the ones that sell trash....Enquirer, NY Times etc and it trickels down to the local level....no one wants to read or hear good things....just junk. well at least the Pa Musician is still reporting good things on the local area. I personally enjoy seeing young & (old) groups still out there providing an escape for people to enjoy. Hats off to JP and the others that provide this service faithfully for our enjoyment.

FOX TV 8 & ABC TV 23 here is Johnstown used to start off each newscast with a "Good News" story about something or somebody positive in the region. Unfortunately, those stations have stopped production of their own newscasts and now purchase those services from NBC TV 6 here in Johnstown (famous for their "Severe Weather" segment even if it is 80 degres and sunny every weather forecast is "severe"). They thrive on things being terrible and the negative things all the time.

I agree with what all of you are saying about journalizm these days!!
I also think that it sucks that they are picking on one establishment.

But, at the same time, I have to wonder if the old saying about "what goes around - comes around" doesn't hold true as well. I personally think Claudio is a crook and it only took one night of playing in his place for me to know that I would never be back and that I would never spend another cent there.

I still think it sucks, but at the same time I am laughing on the inside.

I do understand that different people have various opinions about Claudio, and I'm not going to speak to their experiences, because everyone's is different. Our dealings have always been positive with mutual respect between both parties. Recently, someone else tied to the local music scene got bad publicity in the mainstream press. I don't hold this person - or these people, I should say - in very high regard, though I know that particular people here do not share my opinions. I couldn't help but feel that it was a bit of karma coming to bite them in the asses. Reality is subjective like that.

Regardless, I've really come to realize that you do reap what you sow, especially in such a relatively small community as Central Pa. If a person has an integrity problem, in my experience, it eventually catches up with him or her.

It's good to have a community like Rockpage so people can get information on situations and people and then make their own conclusions.

Claudio and I go way back to when we were 5 years old, his family moved in across the street. We hung out and were best friends through high school. Best man at our weddings.

I know Claudio better than anyone and i will say he is a business man first.
All he wants is the bands to draw, as any bar owner. He's been in the bizz since the 80's and does it his way.
Even i had some dealings with Claud, water under the bridge. Im glad the Canes are back there on Thursdays.

I think the bigger issue remains that the Dime seems to like to publicize whenever something bad happens at a nightspot or live music venue, but ignores when something good happens at one.

I'd like to see if they will give any attention to the upcoming benefit at The Cantina, for example. Here is a nightspot donating its evening, and area musicians donating their talent, to help out an 8-year-old child battling liver cancer. I doubt you'll see any of their television cameras there to cover that event, but, pray-tell, if the PLCB would bust the venue for a noise violation that night, it would be one of their top three stories on their newscast.

JP, have they ever been there for the Toys for Tots benefits?

You know what gets under my skin? Its how the local papers and TV play up theatre, where I used to do a lot of back stage work for ACT. They are talented actors and such, but how come they ignore local musicians that write and play their own music. The plays are already written and the music has already been scored, so the actors just memorize lines and the orchestra plays scored music. There are so many bands around here writing original music and lyrics, but you will never catch the Mirror or Channel 10 anywhere around a local bar where local live music is being preformed.
