16 inches of snow in Johnstown?!?! From a clipper?
16 inches of snow in Johnstown?!?! From a clipper?
I just got an unconfirmed report that Johnstown has received 16 inches of snow today from this clipper system. While I know this is possible... Im having a hard time believing it...
anybody able to confirm?

About 12 inches give or take. I could find spots that measured less, but 12 seemed to be about right. The least I measured was 10.
Now I'm not in town about 7 miles outside near the top of a mountain. I quarantee you on the very top about 100' higher they probably have 16 inches. Thats only around 1/4 to a 1/2 mile away.

The National Weather Service was reporting that Westmont had a half foot of snow as of 6 PM. Definitely this was more snow than everybody was predicting; my forecast on Q94 went from "a dusting to an inch" on Thursday to 2 to 4 inches on Friday, and I swept about 5 inches off my car when I left work Friday night.
SATAN or waydowneast can verify this, but I understand Way Down East had problems and went off the road en route to Aldo's, and had to withdraw from their show there on Friday night. Solegion and Choking Faith played the show as a double-bill.
The roads were treacherous in Altoona around 10 PM. I used some strategy, knowing I would never make it up my hill if I tried to go home early, so I went to Aldo's and hung out there until the end. When I arrived home after 2 AM, my hill had been plowed and I could drive up.
Spring starts officially in a little over three weeks. Hang tight, just a little more winter to go...

The latest National Weather Service numbers say 14 inches of snow in Nanty Glo and 10 inches in Boswell as of 9 PM Friday night. Given those numbers, 16 inches in some of the upper reaches of Cambria County is likely. That same listing said 5 inches of snow in Hollidaysburg, consistent with what I swept off my car.
Next week looks like it could be interesting: 2 storm systems, 2 total opposites (as of right now... this could, and probably WILL change)Jim Price wrote: Spring starts officially in a little over three weeks. Hang tight, just a little more winter to go...
Tuesday into Wednesday it looks we have another 'usual for 2007-2008' Lakes Cutter storm, as shown here by the GFS models.

540 (Rain/Snow/Mix) line looks like it cuts right through Elk County... another mixed bag.. great
Next weekend, specifically Friday into Saturday looks like it could get fairly interesting. Now, it's still 7 days out and with each model run it will suggest a different track and p-type, it still warrants close monitoring... here is why.

if that exact scenario comes true... that's a monster. 540 Rain/Snow/Mix line goes just south of DC, Philadelphia, NY, but North of Boston... almost half an inch of precipitation from South Carolina to Maine. Granted, the chances of this happening (especially with our beloved SE Ridge poking absolutely every storm over the great lakes) stand at about 15 percent, but March is traditionally the snowiest month in a La Nina pattern
Just a few more weeks...

Yeah. Predicting weather is no definite science. They've got computer models, they've got satelites,... Hell, they can probably make countries jealous with all the knowledge they yield. But it's not enough, we're still FAR behind the predictive points we would like to have, and some people ACT like we have. Weather personell really do take a lot of crap from people when really, they're only little less clueless than us about what can and will happen. I will DEFINITELY give them credit for trying though
...However, I will not withdraw my previous statement about Joe Mergo

no, Murgo is a moron. Actually.. MOST tv meteorologists are morons... well, half of them aren't even meteorologists.Naga wrote:Yeah. Predicting weather is no definite science. I attended a Civics Day at the Elk Lodge in Huntingdon... god I was in 8th grade? and Charlotte Ames was the keynote speaker -- she recanted a time in which WTAJ's news producers wanted her to do on-air weather... including forecasting. What a disaster.
Most TV Weathermen may have been a Meteorology Major in College, but they might not be a certified Meteorologist, or a member of the AWS. Joe Murgo is... but he sucks.
Doug Allen, from WGAL in Lancaster is good, and Ed Hanna from the Lehigh Valley is probably one of the best I've seen on-air. Ed Hanna is also on the Accuweather Channel on Comcast, and takes part in discussions on Wunderground.com
To be honest, Naga... the computerized systems and models that Meteorologists, the NWS, and various other organizations use aren't suited for forecasting... but for guidance. That's why a lot of Meteorologists (Joe Bastardi is the ultimate example) will preach the message of keeping track of the here-and-now issues - temperature, wind direction, barometric pressure and that will help give you a better idea of what the weather is going to be... If there is a storm coming from the southwest or south, and you're experiencing winds from the north or northwest -- you know right then and there you're looking at a mix at the very least, all snow to start... but the very moment winds start coming from the south ... you can kiss your precious snowstorm goodbye. The models we use all have their flaws, for example the GFS model never takes into account the existence of Cold Air Damming that usually takes place in the Cumberland and Lower Susquehanna Valleys -- which is why down here, we get destructive ice storms when up there you get snow. The NAM model (North American Model) usually has a hard time tracking correctly, and most of the time it'll give you the wrong precipitation type. Each model has its flaws, which is why it's so important to understand now-casting.
Other than that, it's really all Climatology. What angle the sun is at, what direction the winds come from, how much daylight do we get, how warm is the surface.. how warm is the ocean. ect ect ect

This is why I have a theory to predicting the weather myself. In the winter, it'll be cold. If you wanna make sure of that, step outside. If it's not cold, bring a damn coat anyway!
Conversely, in the summer, it'll be hot. Whether or not it rains is irrelevent. If you don't wanna get wet (as I often don't, or at least not by a chilly rain), bring an umbrella
In the spring and fall, ALWAYS bring a jacket of some sort! I don't care if it's 95º in the late evening. By the time it's nighttime, it could be 35º!

I think we should all sign a petition to get these damn weather people off the TV or we should join forces and SHOOT THEM! They were calling for 1-3 in Indiana/Cambria county with those numbers remaining on the lower end ONCE the rain hit...RAIN MY ASS!!! I went out plowing at 4:00P yesterday in order to get a jump on things if rain was coming...the slushy refreeze would have made for a nightmare. Well I was out until 10:00P and it never turned over to all rain. There was a brief moment where it was a very wet snow mixed with some light rain, but the snow kept coming down in buckets. I would say that Indiana had about 8" of snow during the time I plowed. I went back out at 5:00A this morning and the first half of my plowed clients (from yesterdays plowing) picked up an additional 2" of snow, so I replowed those clients. Moral of the story...the weather people were WAY OFF with the 1-3 INCHES PREDICTION!!!
On a side note...even with all the snow...Indiana Wal-Mart was still packed!!! Where do these people come from...no bad weather is keeping me from vacationing at the local Wal-Mart!!!

I remember this... My little brother was born on mar 10 in 93, we could leave the hospital when my mother was supposed to be released. My little brothers been a pain in the ass ever sinceJim Price wrote:Just a reminder...the Blizzard of '93 (the one that dumped 3 feet of snow on most of the eastern half of the country) happened on March 13.
Laugh if you want to, really is kinda funny, 'cause the world is a car and you're the crash test dummy.
