$9.00. They each paid $10.00 and got $1.00 back.
What is so hard about this?
Ok fine. They each paid $9. 9 X 3 is 27. The bellboy kept 2. That makes 29. So where did the other dollar go?

Ok: 9 X 3 is 27. The bellboy kept 2. That makes 29. Where is the other dollar?
You are breaking the basic rule in math (order of precedence) that you have to do multiplication and division before you do addition or subtraction. You are subtracting the $1 from $10 to get $9 before you multiply by 3.

Is 1 + 3 x 5 equal to 20 or 16? The answer is 16, but then you can't say "why is 16 divided by 5 not equal to 4"?
There's your answer.

I posted this problem a while back and got no response. Look at it this way. Say they each paid with ten one dollar bills. So added together they paid 30 dollars. He gave 5 to the bellboy, who gave each of them 1 dollar back and he kept 2. So now they each paid nine one dollar bills, which adds up to 27, and the bellboy kept 2 which accounts for 29 dollars. Where is the other dollar? This was done with ONLY addition and subtraction. :shock:

These guys each have to fill out an expense report. THey need to put how much they each paid.

So how much did each guy pay. They can't put a bunch of bullshit down on the expense report.

$9.00 it was already explained. They each paid $10 and got $1 back.

Ron explained that with the order of precedence. It's like the optical illusion of math. :lol:

You know, the room was only $25. They paid $30, got $3 back, and the bellhop, that shady fucker took $2. That makes $25. How doesn't that add up? Makes perfect sense!

The guys need an itemized report to submit to their boss so that they can get reembursed. I need to know what each guy paid so they can write it on their expense report.

So does each guy put that they paid $9?
I'm simply looking for this missing dollar. I'm gonna go check the lobby and see if it fell on the floor.

PS Image how shitty it would be to share a room this cheap with 3 dudes.

itemized report says yea, each guy paid 9. There is no missing dollar. The room was $25, not $30. The wording of the question is meant to confuse.

Trucula wrote:I remember that problem!!!, but you missed one line at the end: After giving back a dollar, each man would have paid $9.00. 9 x 3 =27(each man) 27+2= 29(the bellhop kept) What happen to the other dollar? The whole thing was to throw you off and think of adding the wrong numbers. There's like a whole site dedicated to math problems like that...Brain tease?... Thats a good problem tho!....

Here's the results;
Guys = 1,2,3
Owner= O
Bellhop= B

1 has $10
2 has $10
3 has $10
then
1 has $0
2 has $0
3 has $0
O has $30
then
O has $25
B has $5
then
O has $25
B has $2
1 has $1
2 has $1
3 has $1
(that equal the $30) :wink:

This hurt my brain till I did it on paper! :evil:
I guess no one could figure out my chart to trace the money transaction! :(

Here's my theory

Bellhop + $2 + Clients' word to Manager x Manager's rage = -1 Bellhop job
