THE CLASH! YES!
There's another documentary on them that's shown on The Documentary
channel occasionally.....And....as I start to type the name of it....it eludes.
Freakin' Half-heimers.
ANYWAYZZZZZZZ, look forward to seeing this. THE CLASH! Hope they
show them playin' "Safe European Home". Excellent tune.

whoa buddy whoa.undercoverjoe wrote:Downer alert:
I think the Clash are the most over-rated band of all time.
they are #2 out of the original ''big 3'' punk bands...
1. Ramones 2. Clash 3. Sex Pistols
This list cannot be modified or anything. It is written fact. The Ramones were the best punk rock band. The Clash was 2nd. The Sex Pistols come in at a very distant 3rd since they sucked.
The Clash made so much great music...really a shame that they made so much bad music too. Joe Strummer's post clash stuff is great though.
buddy, you're fighting a losing war. there are only a handful of people out there who will EVER accept anything a punk band did, as a musicial contribution..DrumAndDestroy wrote:whoa buddy whoa.undercoverjoe wrote:Downer alert:

these are usually the same people who believe that "Freebird" is the greatest song ever.

I guess you figured out I am not a big fan of punk rock. I didn't know it was a prerequisit to post on RP.
I like rock, jazz, blues, country and swing.
Again the Clash are sooo overrated, mostly because the liberal pop music reporters loved them for being anit-authoritaryism. Big deal. Most blues players in the 30's were fairly anti-authoritaryism, but where were the Rolling Stone reporters then? What rock bands haven't challenged prevailing authority? Punk rock bands are not unique in this.

agreed

It's not. I fucking hate Lynyrd Skynyrd (spelling?) but I can still post here.undercoverjoe wrote:I guess you figured out I am not a big fan of punk rock. I didn't know it was a prerequisit to post on RP.
Congratulations. I like Metal, Hardcore, Punk, Metalcore/Deathcore/Death Metal, and various forms of hard rock and indie rockundercoverjoe wrote:I like rock, jazz, blues, country and swing.
If that's your main thesis for thinking the Clash... or ANY punk band for that matter, are over-rated. I think you need to reevaluate your position on music in general. I don't hate Toby Keith because he's a right-wing nutjob... I hate him because his music sucks. Furthermore... I don't hate Ted Nugent because he's a gun-nut... I don't hate him at all.undercoverjoe wrote:Again the Clash are sooo overrated, mostly because the liberal pop music reporters loved them for being anit-authoritaryism.
My response to this will be the same as yours. Big Dealundercoverjoe wrote:Big deal. Most blues players in the 30's were fairly anti-authoritaryism.
About 30 years from existence.undercoverjoe wrote:but where were the Rolling Stone reporters then?
You're right. The Punk movement only screamed out to kids who were tired of the way America was going... as well as kids who were tired of the music in contemporary America. However, I find it hard to believe that one can justify an entire genre of music, as "over-rated"... simply because of the stances they took. Listen to the music -- it may not be your greatest taste... but I don't think you can deny their influence in other bands of this genre..undercoverjoe wrote:What rock bands haven't challenged prevailing authority? Nightcrawlersteve and I went a round about this the other week... and something he said really stuck to me, and that is "You can't deny the influence that one has on many...". Now, Punk is and will forever be an underground genre of music -- and they wouldn't have it any other way... but I can guarantee you with everything in me, as DnD said... most true punk bands today -- and probably forever will list either The Ramones, The Clash, or Sex Pistols as a primary influence... You can't deny that.

Who cares what you're a fan of? Like what you like. Never said it was a pre-requisite to post here.undercoverjoe wrote:I guess you figured out I am not a big fan of punk rock. I didn't know it was a prerequisit to post on RP.

Liberal pop music reporters? Are there really any other kind? Did the conservative ones hate the Clash? The Clash's message wasn't so big for me compared to their style. They incorporated a lot of reggae and rock into their sound. They were very unique. Even I said that a lot of their music is crap. I don't think were overrated nor underrated.
I was merely making light of what you said in my original post. I wasn't trying to give you the old "Johnny more knowledgable about music than thou" line of shit.
Oh by the way...the day I worry about what Rolling Stone writes about bands is the day I jump off a cliff. Maybe that's why I'm not too up to date on the latest anti-establishment bands?

Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros were great.ZappasXWife wrote:UCJ have you ever heard the stuff Strummer did as the Mescaleros? Its great....more like World music than punk. And DON't judge the Clash by the few top 40 things they did. Really mediocre stuff IMO.
Agreed...don't judge them by their few hits. You really gotta listen to their albums to find their golden stuff.
We'll have to agree to disagree on this one. I think they are the most UNDER-rated band of all time.undercoverjoe wrote:I think the Clash are the most over-rated band of all time.
Listen to their entire discography. They were one of the most musically adventurous bands ever. We're talking a Beatles or Led Zeppelin level of diversity here. They completely transcended punk. One of my favorite Clash songs is "The Card Cheat"; it's a piano based torch song with a marching band.

When I saw how many posts this thread had, I immediately knew someone said something bad about The Clash. I was almost afraid to open it.
This is why I like my music to stay underground.
Then people who don't get it never have to try.
