Would you play WHATEVER it takes ..........

Post by Hawk »

Would you play whatever it takes if you could have a hit record ?

Play / Record a song you don't like ? if it would be a hit ?

Play / Record in a genre you don't care for ? it you could have a successful hit ?

I would never play a genre i didnt like. Thats the freedom of originality.
As far covering a song i didnt like so much, i dont see why not. As long as it was voted for by the band. Not because of anything being a hit , but because the band voted.

Doing something you normally wouldnt do, just because of money....thats selling out.

I'd rather play a song that maybe I didn't care for that was a hit and be financially secure enough to then follow my own muse than follow my muse since the beginning and spend the rest of my life being a starving artist. I seem to be in the minority with that philosophy. *shrugs*

Though, I'm to the point that I can find meaning in playing just about any style of music. Truth be told, I use to seriously turn my nose up at the style of music that I'm currently playing. I humbled myself and realized that I wasn't the bad ass bass player that I thought I was and ended up learning a lot about both music and performance in this band.

simply no.

i'm not into music for money or anything like that. it's a hobby.

i've had more fun playing to 50 kids at a fucking keg party right up in my face than i could doing anything else.

it's taken us almost 7 months to sell 500 and some CDs...give or take a few freebies we've given out. The experience of playing all over the place has made it worth it.

let's get the "you can't tell me you wouldn't wanna....blah blah blah" shit going.

I wouldn't play "anything" but I have a pretty broad musical pallete so my options would be open.

As for recording a cover to break in and open the door for originals, I'm all for that. Many "legendary" bands have recorded covers through history and I see nothing wrong with it, especially if you're putting your own slant on it.

No.

Not in it for the money or fame.

Nothing against anyone who does though, cuz they get theirs in the end.
Ever see VH1 Where are they now?

Yes they have. Usually though, they cover songs that they like/ have influenced them. (Slayer, Mike Ness, And Metallica have done full albums of covers) OR they do those Ironic covers-( Me first and the Gimme Gimmes play nothing but covers.)

Very good answer though Rob. You've been watching these politicians very closely huh? You never said yes or no. lol

Wasn't Quiet Riot's whole recording career based on Slade covers? LOL

I once argued with this burned out dude for like 15 minutes that Black Magic Woman was originally a Fleetwood Mac tune, not a Santana song. I still don't think he believed me.

On a serious note, part of being a musician is being able to play stuff that you may not exactly be hot about. I've played both covers and originals that I could have honestly done without, but reality dictates that's the nature of the gig.

I don't believe in releasing weak material or poorly produced material just to have something out there. That goes back to my thread a few months ago where I asked if it's sometimes not beneficial to have a demo out for the masses. Honestly, I've heard some local bands that absolutely kill live release some of the most poorly produced crapola. I have recordings that I've played on in the past that I really don't allow to see the light of day because I didn't feel the recording was good or the songwriting was up to par or I got some fret noise during the chord change in the second chorus. Then again, I'm a perfectionist like that. On the other hand, maybe it's better to just put stuff out there than pull a "Chinese Democracy" and spend all of your time in the studio trying to reach some paramount of perfection that is unrealistic. :?

Yep, it would have to "do it for me" to record it. For example, I would not be able to record a cover of, "She Thinks My Tractor's Sexy" just to break in to the country market because I wouldn't be happy doing it.

Hehe ... you should never rule out a run for office.

But Sanchez, honestly, some questions can't be answered with a simple "yes" or "no." If it were that way, discussion boards would be very boring.

I would for money.

There's lots of things you would not normally do unless money is involved. This could be a fun thread. Kind of a spin off of Fear factor....

I'm with Paul. I certainly could if I would be able to approach it from a studio muscian's POV. You don't have to like the song, you just have to be able to execute it. Hopefully I would be able to disassociate myself from it (except financially) and use the revenue to support myself (& the fam) while I keep rollin' with my original projects.

BUT.......if you have a hit, you would be expected to play it every time someone sees you play. Could you handle that ?

I don't think I could. I'd have to stop at kicking back and collecting royalties. Granted, without the tour support, it would have less chance of ever earning good royalties, but that the rub. In a comprimise between $ & self-respect, I'd have to choose self-respect.

Sure we could say no, but if this situation were real and you been working your whole life on your craft. I bet the answer would be different.

I know i probably would after being a soup eater...

Working musicians understand, of course, not everyone is or wants to be a working musician. There is nothing wrong with that either. Some people wanna do it for a living, some don't. Either way, we all love to play.

Once upon a time, I'd have said no, but now...
Obviously, I have my point where it's gone too far, and I'd say no, but I must admit, there haver been times when I felt a certain way about a song, and did it anyway, and it surpassed my expectations. A long time ago, my bandmates in Thin Ice basically TOLD me we were doing an AC/DC medley. It clocked in at 26 minutes-plus. I said no way, it was TOO much, and lasted way too long, and people wouldn't like it.
 It essentially paid our bills for the next 2 or 3 years, people LOVED it. Everytime they'd try to leave the dancefloor, another song they liked would come on, and they'd stay up dancing. It got people's attention for long enough that we could play our original music, and they'd listen. Happily, I was wrong, and I realized it ain't always about me.
I'm not playing Achey-Breaky Heart anytime soon, but I have warmed up to that Grateful Dead stuff I don't care for, and I try to keep an open mind as long as bandmates still keep doing the low-key "nobody's-looking-here's-your-pay" handoff at the end of the night, that we all love so well.------>JMS

If it got me out of this town, to live comfortably, and allowed me to follow other avenues as well, yes.

If not...then yes. I always wanted to be famous, I'll take it one way or the other. Since my aspirations of being a pornstar flopped, I will take what I can get.

I mean, let's face it. Aside from the all original bands in the area - aren't we all competing to +1 each other in our style to get better bookings and more money?

Some of my favorite songs are tunes I thought I absolutely hated (or just had no interest in) before playing them.

Alot of people on Rockpage spend way too much time defending their favorite genre by bashing everything else. Try broadening your horizons.

Nickelback is underrated when it comes to this. Everyone bashes them, but they are talented and write some great tunes!
