LOS ANGELES — Britney Spears was taken from her home by ambulance early Thursday and escorted to a hospital by more than a dozen police officers.

A Los Angeles police officer, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak on the matter, said the 26-year-old pop star was being taken to "get help" but did not give the ambulance's destination.

The Los Angeles Times, citing unidentified authorities, said Spears was taken to UCLA Medical Center to be placed on a "mental evaluation hold." Center spokesman Mark Wheeler declined to comment to The Associated Press, citing privacy laws.

Spears' police escort included motorcycles, two cruisers, and two helicopters.

On Jan. 3, police were called to her home when she refused to return her two young sons, Sean Preston, 2, and Jayden James, 1, to ex-husband Kevin Federline, who has custody.

Officers had paramedics haul Spears to a hospital for undisclosed reasons. She was released after a day and a half in Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.

Police also went to the home Monday night after someone reported a swarm of paparazzi trespassing in the singer's gated community. When officers arrived, they didn't see anyone trespassing, police said, but citations were issued for several illegally parked cars.

Spears has been in a highly public downward spiral since filing for divorce from Federline in November 2006.

Her bizarre antics include shaving her head bald, attacking a car with an umbrella and bringing along a paparazzo pal on trips to a courthouse in her child custody case.

I know lots of people that are much more unstable than her, she's just a celeb so she gets noticed a lot. If the people I know were celebs, they would be in the headlines every day.

leave the girl alone...i dont think as of late her 'antics' are to cause attention...she lost her children she is constantly swarmed by papparatzi...at least dating one she can control what pics are taken and not have a car beside her at a red light taking pictures if they would leave her alone maybe things would mellow out everyone fucks up...you, me and the next guy but all of her fuck ups are nationalized...let her go for a lil bit and send some cameras to darfur

One of the papparazi that takes photos of Britney Spears was asked how they always know where she is going to be. The response- "Because we get a phone call 15 minutes before she leaves her house, telling us where she is going to be". That poor girl, I really feel sorry for her.

i didnt say it was your fault its not...its hers it just that everyone -paparazi-flock around her to the point where she cant even sit in front of her home and be alone she has cameras watching her every move...the point i was tryin to get across is that the things she is doing there are other people out there doing and going through but hers is nationalized on tv in magazines even in our altoona mirror...give the girl a break maybe she'll get her act together how frustrating it has to be to see everything you do wrong everywhere...and i dont even like brittney i just feel bad for her...especially with her mother trying her best to make things even worse for her and her sis cuz she wants a lil money in her pocket too

With celebrity and wealth comes a price — and it's usually paid with your privacy. Boo-effing-hoo. She needs to get over herself and stop acting a fool. She has children who depend on her not to be insane and I have no sympathy for the poor little rich girl.

This is what's wrong with society. Video games cause people to kill, rock music causes people to commit suicide, photogs caused Britney to go bat shit, neglect and endanger her children on a constant basis and abuse drugs. Pul-lease.
