Do you have Blue eyes ?

Post by Hawk »

I just found this interesting. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/22934464/wi ... ?GT1=10815

ALL people who have blue eyes have ONE common ancestor ! We all are linked to one single person. 8)

I saw this on another site earlier. It got me thinking-there are a lot more than just blue eyed people with that common (most likely maternal) ancestor.
Take my family for example: I have blue eyes and two of my three children have blue eyes. My middle son has hazel-green eyes (that do have a strange purplish/blue quality in them). Obviously my son shares all my ancestors in common with me, yet he does not have blue eyes. There are obviously plenty of people like my son. So if 40% of Europe alone has blue eyes and there are an unspecified number of people without blue eyes who still share the same ancestor, what accounts for the disproportionate number of descendants that can be attributed to that one ancestor. They must have been quite fertile!

Actually DNA has shown that we are all descendents of only seven different ancestors. Like there was a "bottle neck" (as though many died accept for seven families) of the human race and we are all linked to those 7 ancestors.

I know. I believe paternal DNA can be traced back to only 5. It's still amazing. I'm pretty sure the "bottleneck" theoretically occurred well before the hypothesized time of the mutation in the article, though. I think blue-eyed people just make better lovers .

Ummm...gazing into each others' eyes might be romantic, but give those of us who know better a break already! When it comes down to hanky panky, the eyes DON'T have it! (Yes, my Hazle eyes that sometimes appear Green , and used to appear Blue as a child depending upon I was wearing, were seeing RED . )

In keeping with the "Genetic" theme, when I read the information below in an article, it was a keepah! :) My paternal Grandmother's paternal Grandmother, who married her paternal Grandfather, (Sheriff surname.) was an O'Donnell at birth. What was SO funny to me after reading the following, is my Grandma never seemed too proud of having Irish ancestry!

Scientists in Ireland may have found the country's most fertile male, with more than 3 million men worldwide among his offspring. The scientists, from Trinity College Dublin, have discovered that as many as one in 12 Irish men could be descended from Niall of the Nine Hostages, a 5th-century warlord who was head of the most powerful dynasty in ancient Ireland. His genetic legacy is almost as impressive as Genghis Khan, the Mongol emperor who conquered most of Asia in the 13th century and has nearly 16 million descendants. It's another link between profligacy and power. We're the first generation on the planet where if you're successful you don't (always) have more children.
The research was carried out by Ph.D. student Laoise Moore, at the Institute of Genetics at Trinity. Moore, testing the Y chromosome that is passed on from fathers to sons, examined DNA samples from 800 males across Ireland. The results - which have been published in the American Journal of Human Genetics - showed the highest concentration of related males in northwest Ireland, where one in five males had the same Y chromosome. The results reminded the team of a similar study in central Asia, where scientists found 8 percent of men with the same Y chromosome. Subsequent studies found they shared the same chromosome as the dynasty linked to Genghis Khan.
It made them wonder if there could be some sort of Genghis Khan effect in Ireland, and the best candidate for it was Niall. The team then consulted with genealogical experts who provided them with a contemporary list of people with surnames that are genealogically linked to the last known relative of the "Ui Neill" dynasty, which literally means descendants of Niall.
The results showed the new group had the same chromosome as those in the original sample, proving a link between them and the Niall descendants. "The frequency (of the Y chromosome) was significantly higher in that genealogical group than any other group we tested," said Dan Bradley, whose surname is also linked to the medieval warlord. Other modern surnames tracing their ancestry to Niall include Gallagher, Boyle, O'Donnell and O'Doherty.
Niall reportedly had 12 sons, many of whom became powerful Irish kings themselves. But because he lived in the 5th century, there have been doubts that the king - who is said to have brought the country's patron Saint, Patrick, to Ireland - even existed. Before this research, characters like Niall were almost mythological, like King Arthur, but this actually puts flesh on his bones. When international databases were checked, the chromosome also turned up in roughly 2 percent of all male New Yorkers.
