injuries??

Post by nighthawk »

have you ever injured yourself well enough to make you worry about playing or how long it might take you to heel well enough to play again. i fell today and hurt my hand fairly bad. i wont be strumming any time soon but for a while, at least till i found out it wasn't broke, i was fairly worried. for now i am taking my pain pills and patiently wating till i heel well enough to play again.

i had a legit serious thumb injury in the beginning of december.

i was worried about my future.

physical therapy and a steady diet of alcohol and pain pills took care of that. my first time back on stage was last saturday.

I sliced the index finger of my left hand open nearly to the bone on the day of a show. I superglued it shut and did my best. About halfway through the night it tore back open and got blood all over my bass.
Stand back, I like to rock out.

wrist

Post by xero380 »

I broke my wrist playing soccer and had a cast up to my elbow with my thumb spiked. So only having 4 fingers free I managed to find a way to still play drums and still played shows with my cast on. Believe it or not I think it also might have even helped myself out as far as it healing faster. Just sucked because of no wrist movement or anything but I could still do my drum rolls and rudiments just not up to scale as they can be with wrist movement. Not that anyone cared to hear this but I thought it kinda fit with the topic...hehe :D

I shot a 16 penny nail from on of those roofing guns right into my thumb. It went into the top knuckle joint. It didn't hit a single bone. My first thought after looking at a 16 penny nail sticking out of my thumb was about am i going to be able to playever again. My second thought was a bit more funny i thought my friend Tom would love to see this (he always enjoyed seeing me get hurt) who has a camera. I still remeber looking at one guy and asking "what do i do??" He said pull it out and i was thinking "with a hammer?" I did manage to pull it out with my other hand after the third try. I'm sure i'll have some nice arthritis in that thumb as i get older.
I didn't do it! It was the other guy! I Swear to God!!

Deep-fried bass player fingers here. Tuesday, an unsafe fryer at Shoney's emptied onto the pointer and middle fingers of my right hand. I had a show Sat. I was just starting to get good at fingerstyle, so I got hooked up with GOOD painkillers.
Another time, I managed to dislocate my shoulder while playing. I had some anger management issues at the time. Hurt like hell none the less.

Got my junk repeatedly slammed in a door during a root canal. Couldn't play any Led Zep songs for years. :D

Took a spill last October off the top of a ladder. Hairline fractures in 4 places
on my left arm right around the elbow (Which is what hit the ground first and
I then landed on). Was swollen to about grapefruit size within seconds. This
was on a Saturday.

We played the following Friday and Saturday. REALLY, while it didn't hurt too
bad during the shows, the next, and subsequent, days were none-too-pleasant.

Still gets sore, tired relatively quickly, doesn't quite bend to straighten quite as
much as it used to... but by gumbit, never missed a show. Idiot.

Many years ago, I was working with a machine that took electromagnetic images of documents and made printing plates. The plates were on a big roll of plastic film with a sideways guillotine cutting blade. The film got stuck and I put my right hand too far into the machine to loosen the film and cut the entire tip off the middle finger on my right hand. I found the tip of my finger and as we were running down the stairs to get to the hospital, the first thing I said was, "How am I going to play my bass?" That was all I was worried about. The doctor sewed the tip of my finger back on with 12 stitches and I had a very painful band practice 2 days later. I insisted on practicing and playing 2 gigs a few days later. I had to sit in a chair and try to play every song with a pick. Every time I hit a string, the pain shot up through me. It was awful but THE SHOW MUST GO ON. The weird thing is that for many years that part of my finger would get itchy when the weather was going to get bad.

When my disc between my L4/L5 ruptured during the Toys For Tots show, I litterally thought I was gonna die on stage. I've had burns, cuts and broken bones that were bad, but never felt pain like that ever. But the show went on and 24 hrs later I was having emergency back surgery. I've got nerve damage that may take another year yet to regenerate and I have to be very careful loading equipment to avoid re-injuring it. Also I have to avoid Sanchez's shenanigans on stage of slamming and tackling while we play and no more headbanging or moshing.
If my back get's any worse I told the guys I'll just get a Rascal Scooter and mount my pedal board and cabs to it!

You can get a Hoveround and do the Hoveround Dance like the old people do on the TV commercial.

Back on a Friday night in the mid-90's, I slipped on a patch of ice on the front step of the Q94 house and sat down hard at the base of the steps, chipping two of my lower ribs near the base of my back. At the time, I was on the air and had to catch a top of hour ID. In pain, I got back up, went back into the house and managed to race back up the steps to the studio to catch the ID. Later, with the pain subsiding after the initial fall, I drove over to the G-Man and hobbled my way inside to see a band (I could stand and walk okay, I just couldn't sit down). The next morning, I could barely get out of bed, and ended up having to stay overnight at Altoona Hospital.

And although not an injury, I once had to do my show for the better part of a week with laryngitis. I otherwise didn't feel sick; I just didn't have any voice to talk with. I sounded so bad on the air, a few listeners called our office to make sure I was going to live!

At age 18, I cut the tip off my left index finger at the first knuckle, well, it was actually pinched off by a steel beam I dropped and instictlively tried to catch.
I had one of the first real reattachment surgeries at JC Blair Hospital, and the doc (who did an excellent job, there isn't even a scar except where the beam mashed it, not where they reattached) told me I would obviously never play guitar again. Well, obviously I do play guitar, but the meat hangs off the bone at an odd angle now, and it has affected my playing. I've never considered myself much good at guitar anyway, and most of the instruments I've learned to play since don't require the use of that finger for fretting (harmonica, dobro, etc.) so I've managed to improve at a much faster rate on those.
I was also involved in a pretty bad traffic accident at a show, did the whole intensive care thing, but luckily, that was only a brain injury. :P ---->JMS

There have been weeks where we'd use our practice PA for a smaller club show, then do a gig the next night where "house sound" was provided and in both cases, if the monitor mix wasn't up to par, I'd eff something up. One night, I actually felt something "snap loose" in my throat.

Recovery throughout the week in these instances sometimes took several days with minimal ability to speak (to the pleasure of my coworkers).

In-ear monitors ... please, Santa ... I'll be good, I promise.

Fractured left wrist in 5th grade, casted from thumb to shoulder. I still played anyway.

Separated right shoulder in September 2005, which basically got me booted from a band because I had to miss 2 gigs.

I remember in my old band Xpendable we were playing a show at Peter C's and we were in the middle of Becoming by Pantera and I was doing my usual crazy stage shit. Well I must have headbanged too hard and smashed my head right into a monitor speaker. Split my forehead wide open. Blood was gushin and flying all over the floor. We finished the song and Mary who was working at Peter C's at the time cleaned me up and we finished out the night.

Yeah, that ruled.

Brian, you'll be okay. Just dont force yourself to play, let yourself heal up. You got two weeks...
Laugh if you want to, really is kinda funny, 'cause the world is a car and you're the crash test dummy.
