5150 II Question

Post by Bert|Evil »

I’ve been playing solid state for the last couple of years, probably because I haven’t played out at all. While I do get a great sound, it’s not good enough for natural stage volume. I play metal and rock.

I’ve been looking at some used Peavey 5150 II heads on Ebay. They’ve got a good reputation for heavy metal, and I’ve been around long enough to know that Peavey makes some quality stuff.

The biggest question that I have for all of you is regarding the effects loop. Do you feel that the effects loop is accurate? I know that some amp makers aren’t so good for effects loops (Marshall mainly), so that’s why I’m asking. I have a Digitech GSP Legend 21 that has a 7 band EQ that I currently use in my effects loop, and I’m hoping that it will be a good match.

So, I’m looking for a LOUD amp with plenty of grind and a good clean channel. Any thoughts?

I never messed with the FX loop; but I hated the clean channel. On the other hand; the dirty channel kicks major ass

i thought the effect loop and distortion was noisy and "far away" sounding on my the 5150 i owned. a Mesa single rectifier might work for you and has a much more transparent loop; it also won't cost you and arm and a leg like a dual... it's 50 watts but you can really drive the tubes at a reasonable volume for some nasty grind...

Chad and Jason did you like the clean tone on your Single rectifier ? And don't you think that when using the effects loop it takes away from the overall sound. Just wondering because I don't really care for the clean channel or the FX loop.

I can live with the clean on my single; I dont necessarily love it. Its not a great clean tone but it works well for a Nirvana style clean and dirty bluesy tone. I dont use clean tone at all in The Embalmed; but I did use it in Killjingle. I wanted to buy a Fender for clean and A/B but I realized that the band was going to be shortlived so I really had no reason to buy one. If I was doing something different musically I am not sure what kinda head I would buy...

it takes away a little from the sound, but i thought the loop in my 5150 sucked ten times as bad. what the hell is clean tone anyway???
