What about the opposite effect? There are lots of songs that were written using the name of an existing band. I had a well known band called Lickety Split and found out a regional band wrote a song called Lickety Split. Maybe somebody in that band liked our band or they just liked the phrase (who knows). Sometimes, a band writes a song after their own name such as Black Sabbath did on their first album.

When I was 15 years old (note the age), we thought it was cool to name our band "Talisman" after a song by The Guess Who, which was never a hit single. We liked The Guess Who very much and played many of their songs; but, never played the song Talisman on gigs. We liked the meaning of the song, which was an object believed to give magical powers to somebody who carries or wears it, e.g. a stone or jewel. After three years, we changed the name to a very non-sensical, 70's type name, Stun * Daze. The crazy thing is that people remembered the strange name Stun * Daze much more than Talisman because it was different.

Brings back too many childhood memories.

Of course, if people said "You sound like shit." We could say "What the Fuck did you expect?".

It's pronounced, "Doo-SHAY." It's French-ish.

Now give it up for Robby Doo-SHAAAAYYY!!!"------>JMS

I've gone to both extremes. Plush comes from the STP (acronym...sidebar...forget it...moving on) song of the same name, but there's no real connection. We do play a few STP songs, including Plush occasionally, but mostly we were just looking for a one-syllable word that no one in the band had any real objection to. We also liked what the word defined, which we thought fit our sound. I think its worked out well for us. The bottom line IMO is that the music should do the talking, and people should remember the show more than the name.

Case in point, my previous band - The Gun Runnin' Amish. We spent quite a bit of time arriving at a creative name. It had a great (true) backstory, which made it even more memorable. Unfortunately, we weren't all that great. Every time we mentioned our name, people would say "yeah, I've heard of you guys", but most would also say they'd never actually seen us play. We had more name recognition than talent. Personally I'd prefer it the other way around.

yeah, Tommy Getz from Tyrone. Good pipes. Not sure if he's still singing or not.

MOONDOGGY wrote:Once upon a time when the group was starting out, one of the members had a fat lip from a bar fight, or an abusive wife, or whatever. Apparently it was pretty bad, and someone had said, "Man, it looks like God smacked you upside the head." I am paraphrasing, but again that's just what I heard from an interview with the band. As much as I hate to defend Godsmack, I'd rather the truth be known.
This's more useless knowledge from my memory's vaults. If I remember right, I believe it had something to do with one guy got that lip problem. One of the others made a lot of fun of him beyond what the rest did. A few days later, after the lip problem faded, the dude making fun of it got the same issue. They then made the claim that "god smacked you!". I may be wrong here. I actually like Godsmack myself... Heh

But yeah. I'd say it depends on the band. A few made the mention that if the band is a cover band and chose a song of the band they cover, it's cool. If, by example though, you're calling yourselves Kashmir, you'd better well be covering the Zep

Aside from that though, I've got no problem with it. The name of a band is simply an identifier. It doesn't have to be the most well-thought thing. Hell, you can tell by some bands that there is no thought in it. But having a cool name, no matter if i t's an obscure song title or just a cool name, is always decent. As long as the people who came, saw and enjoyed the show remember the name to tell their friends and see more shows, you really can't have much to complain about

See, this is different. Stone Temple Pilots is actually a famous band that people have heard of. The acronym, "STP" is accepted and recognized. I'm talking about every band out of the woodwork (whether or not they have all their members ... or gigs) with three or more words in their name condensing it to "GXQ" or "KZW" and expecting people to know who they are.

I may be repeating someone here, but a name does not a band make. The band makes the name. You could have a really clever name like"Men@pause", but nobody will remember that name unless they like you.

1st things first: Hey all!..Sorry I haven't been on in awhile...been too work busy to check in and update..So hey to all my friends I haven't spoke to in awhile!...

I can kinda chime in on this thread, tho I never was involved with picking any name of any of band I was ever in.

Our name does come from a song title. And I agree it does work well if the name comes from a song that your a tribute band of, as said earlier. Our name was picked by a member and a member's brother who use to work nights at a large lumber company. They did specialty lumber from worldwide. They had to listen to the constant roar of the equipment all night, When quiting time came in the morning it was the machines shutting down that let them know it was quiting time. They would say "The Sound Of Silence!!"...And one said it was gonna be his bands new name.
As far as the S.O.S things goes...he never wanted to be known as that because of other things it ment. But it came about when most bars didnt have the space or enough letters for the board...And allot of friends are too tired to say the whole name...LOL

IMO I think one word names are best. easy to say, remember, and get on a sign! Kinda like naming a dog!

Interesting note...You should always give dogs and cats a two syllable name. Can't remember why. Easier association or something.

You should also stand on your back porch and scream the name of said dog - it needs to sound good when 'hollered' - maybe that holds true for bands names too??

The first band I was ever in was "No Warning Shot", we took it from a Six Feet Under song and to make it worse we tried to sound just like them lol. Oh those were the days
