Bands taking their names from other band's song titles
Thoughts??
I always hate when i see a band that took their name from another band's song title. right off the bat, its hard to respect that. how do other people feel about it?

Hmmmm
Honestly, Who really fucking cares! So they arent creative enough to come up with something original. BIG deal! Everybody loved Godsmack and they stole their name from Alice in Chains. I could honestly care less where they get their name from as long as their music is good.
We got all highed Up and somebody put the car in the Pool!

Matt, I certainly didnt like Godsmack! I guess im not part of 'everybody'.
Im not gonna say there is something WRONG with using a bands song title or something for a name of a band...just that it shows a lack of effort. maybe its just the way im seeing it. i couldnt imagine naming a band "Black No.1 ".
Love the song....love Type O ... but no way.
And btw, this topic isnt meant to insult anyone. just a musical topic. beats the hell out of the sports or political threads!

band names
I don't see what it really matters. If you're band is seriously trying to go somewhere then ok maybe i'll understand. As for playing locally...what is the big deal how and what someones band name is?

Stones did it. Seems to have worked for them.
Actually, coming up with a good name, or even more so, that everyone
likes is such hassle, I figure find one wherever you can.
I've had tons of potential names that I've thought were great but when
you sit down with everyone to figure out what you want to go by, and this
one reminds the singer of something someone said when he was in first
grade and still troubles him, the next one the bass player thinks sound
too much like some band he saw when he was 12 and didn't like, the next
one confuses the drummer, etc....
QUITE possibly the hardest thing for everyone to agree on.

Re: band names
so you're saying a band should take a famous song title's name to acheive success?xero380 wrote:I don't see what it really matters. If you're band is seriously trying to go somewhere then ok maybe i'll understand.

as for band names? who the fuck cares...
as long as it's not blatantly obvious.. nobody is going to notice unless they retain a shitload of useless fucking knowledge (like me). Fact is, original band names are fucking impossible to come up with anymore anyways, and even if you find one that's original... a promise you there are 10 bands that has names that are pretty much the same damn thing...
example:
Prayer for Cleansing
A Plea for Purging
I swear to god, we're getting to a point to where people, and bands are going to be given names of things we don't associate as "names"... like in the movie Idiocracy, where the best movie of 2505 was called "Ass", a man was named "Not Sure", a lawyer had the name of "Frito Pandejo", the President of the United States was named "Dwayne Elizondo Mountain Dew Herbert Camacho", a judge named "Hank BMW", a reporter named "Formica Davis", and two celebrity 'rehabilitators' named "Tylenol Jones", and "Beef Supreme".. I think this is eventually what we'll have to do in naming bands, and some punk/grind/hardcore bands are already doing it...
I mean, what the hell kind of name is 'Job For A Cowboy'?..
just my .02

Technically, Motorhead's name is from a Hawkwind song Lemmy wrote while he was with them. So Lemmy shouldn't have a problem with Overkill choosing one of Motorhead's songs...Overkill got their name from a Motorhead song. They just got done touring Germany with them, so I don't think Lemmy cares.
I get tired of band names that sound like the band has sand in their vagina's. Seems like it's all, "Agony Of Inhaling," and, "The Soul Implodes." Jeez, guys, we figured you have low self-esteem, but damn. Apparently, nailing sixteen-year old girls and not paying any bills is a real drain on your happiness level.
I hope to someday be in "The 'somethings.'" like The Hurricanes or The Marauders. That says who you are right away. Who knows, if I dressed like a Tim Burton film, I could be lead pouter for Sandy & the Vagina's.

+1 ... and I've touched on this before, it drives me insane when bands with multiple word names refer to themselves in acronym form, as if everyone is supposed to know who they are.songsmith wrote:I get tired of band names that sound like the band has sand in their vagina's. Semi-funny story: My 16-year-old daughter went to see a band a few weeks ago, made up of her fellow high schoolers at some outdoor function. The band was kinda emo, and were named, "Gift Of The Hour." Of course, the acronym works out to "GOTH," which I suppose is clever.
I told her to suggest to the band that they change the name to, "Gone Away Yearning."

That's what she said.
wasn't Hoover's son involved with Gift Of The Hour, at one point?BadDazeRob wrote:+1 ... and I've touched on this before, it drives me insane when bands with multiple word names refer to themselves in acronym form, as if everyone is supposed to know who they are.songsmith wrote:I get tired of band names that sound like the band has sand in their vagina's. No...i'm saying that if the band is actually trying to go somewhere then maybe I could understand by filtering and filtering names to find the right "one" but if you're just staying local or even regional then what is the big deal?

IMO, the only time this works is when a tribute band takes a name from the band they are doing. For instance, Dead Flowers was a cool name for a Stones tribute band. Any other use is a pretty lame wannabee mentality.
Its snowing, so I guess its time to drop D, tape up my fingers and start a band called "pinnacle of misery". Really, I wish this phase of music would run its course.
Someone stole your Xbox? "screeeeaaam" thump thump thump
No allowance for a month? "rrrrrrrrrgghhh" thump thump thump
Jeremy stole your Goth chick? "aaaaahhhhhrrrrrggh" thump thump thump
