i need some opinions. what are the best bands that would appeal to a wide age range of people who like all different types of music?

The Rolling Stones have been a time honored tradition for years. Mathcbox 20, Eve 6 and U2 come to mind. Aerosmith seems to always be popluar. Hope this helps! LOL

Man, that's a hard one to answer. Anytime that we've ever picked a song to play, we took a bunch of things into consideration with them to know whether it's going to be a waste of time to learn or a song that'll stay in your setlist forever.

Ask non-musicians what they think of tunes you're considering. No offense to musicians, but most musicians I know don't dance. If you're looking for it to be dancable, ask chicks that love to dance.

Radio is a good way to find out what people are requesting. Talk with some DJ's and check billboard charts.

Pending on the style of music, if someone can instantly start bopping their head to a song and can sing a long with the hook, you might have a winner.

If the majority have not heard of a song, don't bother. Unfortunately, people want you to play what they already know. There might be a killer song that has everything there, but if no one recognizes it, you'll watch a dance floor clear fast.

One of the biggest things I've seen with setlists is to learn song placement. A song can go over huge in the third set, but put it in first or second and consider it a flop. Pay attention to the reactions from people in the crowd to see. For some reason unknown to man, if a person isn't drunk enough, they won't dance. If someone figures that mystery out, please let me know. heh

Here's a non-musicians opinion. Must definetly agree song placement is a HUGE factor in how many ppl you get on the dance floor. I've seen a lot of bands that pretty much have a specific set of songs that they play the first set and every time, no one is on the floor until the second set. It's not that they aren't good song because they usually are but that's when the girls say "I can't dance yet, I'm not drunk enough." My ass is on the dance floor as soon as I hear a song that makes me WANT to dance. Just because it's a good song and it's danceable doesn't mean ppl will dance. Everyone has a mind set when they go to see bands of what sound they are looking forward to hearing. Pop, Rap, Punk, Heavy...some ppl won't dance if they don't hear what they want so it's a definete must to mix it up alot. There is nothing that I love more than when a band starts the night off with something heavy, Disturbed, Rage, etc. then jump into something along the lines of Blink 182 and some punk then into pop dance music. The toughest part of bands in this area is that if you do play all of one genre, good crowds are hard to come by. Some of the local bands that I have gone to see that play all heavy, Pivot, Lost Ledny, Deviance....do draw a good crowd. As long as there is music playing ppl will come, you just have to know how to keep them there and keep them happy. Hope this helps.

Try not to worry about what BANDS you cover as opposed to what SONGS. Bands come and go, but the song stays.
People love familiarity, too. It makes them feel like they're in the know, like they're included because they know that song. Play stuff you like, though, because it gets old real quick if you don't.----->JMS
