Noise Gate questions

Post by FATTY »

I am using a Rocktron Hush through the front of my rect-o-verb as of right now (tried the effects loop but it takes away from my sound). But the rocktron has a hiss to it that I don't care for. I was wondering what everyone else has in their chain ?

MXR- Smart Gate ?

Rocktron- Hush ?

Boss- noise supressor ?

Need yo help

Would you run the boss through the front or the effects loop?

I run mine between the guitar and the amp/preamp input, works great for me that way.

I run mine immediately after the preamp/eq (1st in FX loop). That way it gates the noisiest part of the amp: the preamp. Also, at the instrument input, the signal is at a much lower level than after the preamp. The lower level signal is more prone to tone change (aka pedal tone sucking) by the gate and also sets a smaller window for the gate's threshold control...HOWEVER:

It really depends a lot on your rig and a lot on whether you have active or passive pickups on your guitar.

I'd try it both ways and see which one is easier to set a threshold to maximize your sustain.

You guys use noise gates? Weird. I've never owned one.

They come in handy sometimes. I only use it on a few patches. One that you might not expect is for an acoustic guitar simulator. When not playing, there is a lot of bristling background noise that needs shut off.

Works like a charm.

Scotty Bush sent me a riff showcasing some new tone that he just acquired; he had the suppresor engaged and I really dont mind what it did for his tone.

I think I will add one to the almighty pedalboard.

Hmm, I guess I hadn't really thought about it before. I've never used one simply because I like when my guitar is on the edge of spiraling out of control. I have always used feedback and such in my playing.

A noise gate is a must, IMO, if you run any serious amount of gain. I hate noisy guitar and bass rigs.

I've been using the same Rocktron Hush II for over 15 years now. It's patched into the effects loop of my preamp after the effects. For me it works best here because I can dial out some of the "tinnyness" of the effects, just seems to give the tone a more polished sound. Zero hiss too.

in your case; Im not sure if Id want a gate. Maybe in between songs? I love the droning feedback for the style of music you guys create. For my situation where I have to be concerned with rolling the volume off for dynamic content during a few songs I might try one.... plus my rig is a little noisy I think from my tremolo or 'verb pedal...

Yeah, you need to see us live. There really aren't too many "between song" parts.

I have always switched to my clean channel if there's a long pause and a noise issue. I have also always been lucky to have low levels of noise throughout my whole rig. I actually have my first noise issue lately and that's with the new Boss RE-20 Space Echo pedal. It adds a little bit of noise in the background, but it's not too bad. I still know it's there though. 8)
