I got quoted some ridiculous price a year ago,and seriously who is going to watch @ 1 am. Most people work and don't stay up.Killjingle wrote:what is exactly the price on this? I have heard rumors about the price many times, but Im wondering for whatever price u quote what exposure do u get showing it at 1:00 AM Sunday?
It might be cheaper now,or at least it should be.
And where is the viewing radius?

He told me it was $400 a couple days ago. The price should be listed in all honesty. I wish the time slot was better for the broadcasting! 1 am is really late.

This is interesting. I would have thought this was a "you scratch my back, I'll scratch yours" type of situation. Without a band to videotape, is there not no underground TV show at all?
is this a service above and beyond the normal underground TV? $400 really seems reasonable to me for a professional DVD quality live movie. To get that kind of money out of me, I'd have to see samples, and they would truly have to be pretty good quality though.

I guess you get one video. Like 1 music video. not one full live dvd. they sync one of your songs to the recorded video.

I wish Coke was still Cola and a Joint was a bad place to be.
I dont know what the charge is currently. Our band did this when UGTV was getting off the ground. It was more than $400 then.
It may be a little expensive and you may think at the 1am time slot its not worth it, but let me share our experience with UGTV.
It was worth it. Period.
I was skeptical at first. Chris and his crew bent over backwards to please us. And let me tell ya, we were a bit of a pain in the ass. But they made it right. We got 3 songs out of the deal. Kathy (kissmydagoass -RP name) is a great host and they work hard and care about their program.
Are you going to get an MTV quality video? Do you think you should for $400 or whatever it is now? No, of course not. But you are going to get a good product, work with good people and have a nice little video of your band.
It was worth the money for us.
I cant tell you how many people have said, "Hey, I saw you on that TV show - cool". The band interview is a little bonus too if they are still doing that.

Im gonna be straight up about this.
I have yet to see a rate posted by the Underground. Why is that? If 400 is a great deal then post the rate.
I like your response to this; because it gives me useful info...
400 dollars is a lot of money; and I dont mind spending it on an investment into our band's future. However; I watched all the original episodes and I thought at some point it was more of a vehicle for Chris's eventual Dragonfire reunion then I thought it was for the band that was paying the cash.
Why did I think that? Because I thought I heard more "host music" then I did "guest music." I didnt create the show, so I am not going to critique the content or material... its a very nice effort by all those involved in putting it together. I guess if I put together a show I might use some tracks from my past efforts.
The term "any exposure is good exposure" sounds great in the perfect world; but this side of PA cant even agree on being imperfect.
Maybe I have a sore ass about getting burned yrs ago on something unrelated to the show.
But if the rate is fixed; why no pricing on the 10 emails Ive received on myspace, home email, or here?

Who would ever think to use a television show as exploitation for their own personal gain?
Unthinkable.

Very colorful comments from everyone. Let me see if I can shed some light on everything so we can clear things up.
The price is $400 to film and edit one video to your CD audio track. Live audio recording is optional at an additional cost. The reason the prices aren't listed in my posts is simple. There are different options for recording and every option changes the price. I don't want to confuse anyone with pricing variables when I can just explain what we do and if you are interested, feel free to contact us and we can discuss everything.
One thing left out in Team Transylvania's reply to the thread is that for our filming date we pay your band a minimum of $100 for their performance. It's not much but at least it's a guarantee and it also basically makes your video now $300.
On top of that we take care of booking the show with YOUR BAND.
Pay for all print work with YOUR BAND NAME including PA musician, flyers and newspaper.
Run radio commercials with YOUR BAND NAME.
Run television commercials with YOUR BAND NAME.
Play YOUR VIDEO on the episode.
Add YOUR VIDEO to The Underground web site.
I've seen how most bands advertise and I'm pretty sure TV and radio are not in the budget, so we take care of that and try to make it a nice "event" for filming instead of just showing up at a show with 15 kids doing the one man mosh.
We put your video on our web site which last year averaged 500 visits per day for our on line battle of the bands. This year we will be doing something similar with the bands that we film to try to get them in front of as many new eyes as possible.
The Underground does air at 1:00am, that is correct but what you fail to see because you don't work with FOX is that we pull ratings every year. Ratings mean that just because YOU think it's on too late, there is an average of around 5000 per weekend that apparently don't think it's on too late and they are watching YOUR BAND. Where else can your band be seen by that many people in a weekend? We try to get your band out to as many NEW eyes as possible. Yes playing at your favorite bar week after week may help pay the bills but ultimately that isn't the goal for every band. Some want to travel or push CD sales in different areas. That is what we're trying to accomplish. If your band only wants to play the local club every weekend then that is great for you, I'm not knocking that. I am just pointing out that different bands want different things and with our show we try to help with some of those goals.
The post from MeYatch. Are you doing a club a favor by playing there? Listen, we charge money for a service mainly because, to have a TV show isn't free. We pay a lot of money every month to put on a TV show for bands to have a place for their music because face it, there just aren't too many outlets for us. We have gone into debt year after year over this television show and yet we are still trying.
Killjingle sorry you look at things the way you do because of whatever bad feelings you have about my band, but if you go back and review the episodes again you will notice that in every episode we played at least two band videos as well as interviews. Yes a song from my band was used as our intro, etc but again if you would take notice at no point anywhere does it have any lyrics as well as mention my band name in even the credits. The TV show started before my band was even back together and since I wrote the song, I had full rights to use the music as a TV intro, etc. I made sure not to give my band a credit for the into for the very reason of keeping my band and the TV show separate. My band has appeared on TV twice in three years, so that's how much I was pushing my band.
So what if I did actually? If you were the one that paid for the show, did the booking, filming, editing, advertising, etc etc I'm sure you would at least throw your band in every once and a while. Who would blame you? You work very hard at it, so why not from time to time.
The bottom line is this. We are a TV show that provides a service to bands and every year we get a larger and larger following. We're very proud of what we're doing and excited that we can continue another year. If we've helped bands get even a few more fans or book a few more clubs, then what we are doing is working. We're not trying to guarantee you a record deal or anything we know we can't supply, we are merely telling you hey, we can help you advertise your name and give you a pretty good video for your press kit, etc if you want one. No one is forcing you to sign up, but the option is there.
Sure we've faltered along the way, who hasn't? This is new to us and we're trying everything we can to make sure that it runs and that every band is happy.
Lori (girlfriend/co-owner) and I have tried hard to make the underground a success. Along with Kathy, Stacy, Travis, Mylissa, Rachel, Eric Hill, Kiwi, we hope this year will be the best yet.

i think 400 which is really three hundred sounds like a deal and a half to me. it's really a small investment in yourself. insted of splitting up the take and the end of gig if this intrests you why not put it back into your business(your band)
i think i read earlier, they use six cameras, which tells me it's probobly a pretty cool vid. everything cost money. and it doesn't sound like anybod is getting rich here, sounds like ugtv would be happy just to break even at the end of the year.
i think this is a great service for bands, you got to spend it, to make it!
but i understand how business works, and i also believe in investing in myself.
kudos to ugtv for having the vision to do this for everybody who wants too. i think it's great!

Awesome
This is a huge deal for alot of local acts. I think what Chris and UGTV are doing is wonderful for area musicians. Who cares about PRICE when u are getting Television air time. I know that the people at UGTV do a SHITLOAD of work to get this show on the air and to get the live video to the bands. MAJOR KUDOS goes out to Chris Kathy and the rest of UGTV for all their hard work and effort to help ALL OF US out. I'm looking forward to working with them in my band SeVeR. THANK YOU AGAIN ALL OF YOU!
We got all highed Up and somebody put the car in the Pool!
I've been reading this and have been debating whether or not I should give a comment/question.
Why make bands pay at all. If the show is getting good ratings or good enough ratings don't you think companies would be knocking on the door to advertise during the show? This advertising money/cost per 60 second ad (if set right) could pay for all expenses...labor, materials, equipment, etc. Without the bands there is no show...right? So basically the bands are the main reason there is a draw to the show. What you have is a general/local MTV, FUSE, etc. With a good enough product you'll get a good enough response/viewers. Back in the day MTV did music interviews/videos...the bands didn't pay for that. The label paid for a video, submittied it to the station, and if the band was the "in thing", they were placed on a show to help draw ratings for MTV and generate awareness towards an up and coming band. Maybe seek out advertisers to pay for your expenses...including the band expense. I think most bands would do the show for nothing (including the $100 show pay) for the exposure. But it seems to me that the majority of the bands on the program are typically bands that are trying to get their name out and haven't even played a show or bands that already have a name out, get paid decent for their shows, and are looking for another resume builder. In my experience, venues, agents, labels really don't care about this type of stuff...all they want to see is a TOUR HISTORY. They want to see bands who can travel out of their area, survive on the road, and can draw 25+ people in every other market outside of their hometown.
Just some thoughts and insight on things I've come across over the years.

Chris: Killjingle is bringing up a time about 5 years ago when The Embalmed were regularly playing Johnstown and doing very well there, despite the COMPLETE lack of any kind of metal /original scene to speak of. It was almost unheard of for a band like ours to get booked because of the skeptisicm and downright dislike many bar owners had for our type of music. Once we had our foot in the door and were able to bring good sized crowds, we always brought in other local and out of town acts to play
in Jtown because it was a really happening place to play at the time. We had Dragon Fire play some really cool shows with us there, and we were really surprised when you guys seemed incredibly disinterested in having us play with you in Altoona and on your metal fest in Ohio. The only gig you ever offered was a gig to open for you was in Windber and at a bar we already had a regular gig at. We had tried to open a door for you guys, and felt that you never cared to reciprocate. It's honestly water under the bridge now, as you have seen us at Dragon Fire shows as well as Underground TV shows as well. We felt it was an obligation to other metal bands and friends to help them with our sucsesses to help share the scene; we didn't feel that you guys felt the same way about us. We also felt there was a geniune friendship formed between us all, and we were never once asked to play with you guys. But that was five years ago, and we're certainly not bitter and root for your sucsess as well as all our metal brethern. No blood, no foul. Maybe we can get together sometime and pick up where we left off. hell up!!!
in Jtown because it was a really happening place to play at the time. Yes, you’re correct; the $400 fee is for video production. The cost covers filming, editing and production of one song synched to your CD. If you don’t have a CD, we have the capability of recording live audio for an additional fee.
For example, if you have a show at your local bar and want us to come out and film its $400. We don’t promote the event or put your video on The Underground. It’s no different than going to a recording studio, they record a CD for you, it’s not their job to promote and advertise it. They make you a CD, we make you a video.
Right now we’re filming content for our 4th season, so putting your band on the Underground TV is an added benefit, sort of like a limited time, special offer. We add in radio and TV commercials, flyers and print work at our own cost, giving bands more value for their investment.
Yes, it would be ideal if we could generate enough advertising dollars to cover everyone’s expenses. Keep in mind, we’re not a mainstream family friendly show, and we’re based in a very conservative community. Local businesses are hesitant to put their name on something non-traditional. We’re definitely making progress but it’s been an uphill battle.
I want to thank everyone who has supported us over the past 4 years. We’ve worked with a lot of great bands and have made a lot of new friends who make all of this worthwhile.
