I'd put this in the CD Release section, but it's not really a CD (unless you have a place or event we can play, then I'll burn you one), so I put it in Gen Discussion. Moderators, please move it if you deem necessary.

A few weeks ago Mama Corn popped into Audible Images studio and whipped up a demo recording, for the purpose of letting prospective clubs and event planners know how we sound. It came out pretty good, so I'd thought I'd share it with you all. There are little gonks and timing issues if you listen hard enough, but I like it anyway, and too much polish wouldn't be realistic for our music.

Especially check out Shenandoah Mountain Tops, written by Jeremy Nelson's dad, Ben, who did the song 30 years ago as a member of the Grass Strings. There's also one on there called Zoom Zoom Zoom that I sang as a kid in church, and it's highly possible that my dad wrote it (my dad didn't like people knowing he wrote songs, and it can't be proven one way or another at this point.).

John, you guys sound really good, my fav. is probably 'Rain and Snow' it's somewhat slower than the rest.
You know your music reminds me of the stuff on the Dukes of Hazzard, especially when the big chase scene begins and the banjo's are pickin' away.
And yes that's a compliment, and a good thing!!

It's very relaxing indeed. I always enjoyed listening to bluegrass from time to time, just kick back and unwind.

Rain and Snow's probably our favorite right now... it's different than our usual balls-out tempo's, more groove-oriented. It's dead easy to play, too. Play a G chord, set the tension with an F chord, then resolve with another G. Repeat. That's bluegrass: Spare arrangements, easy chords... then pour your heart out on top of it. It's the white man's rural blues.

Thanks for the kind words, all. I was hoping you guys would like it. I hate to say the most obvious thing, but... we're much better live. A few of our fans have pointed out that these recordings don't tell the whole story, and sound somewhat sterile compared to the live show. I can't disagree, but we do feel limited by the recording process. We usually just stick a condenser mic in the middle of the circle at rehearsals, or a line out from the board at live shows, so really getting into the nuts and bolts of studio work isn't how we're used to operating. Live, we're 5 guys cracking wise and grinning and playing 90mph, having a blast.
Mama Corn shows are where it's at.
Again, we're looking for shows... some nice warm indoor club dates would be awesome for the winter, to keep us sharp for next bluegrass season. If anyone knows of a club or indoor event we could play, please contact me ASAP. Our schedule is pretty thin right now, because we concentrated on recording and let the booking fall aside. Summer 2008 is actually getting filled nicely, but the next few months are mostly open. We'd like to get outside the Altoona area this winter as well. Let me know your ideas!

Everything sounds fantastic! Great work brothers. I was having a problem listening to tunes on myspace, for a couple days. But everything is working now and I had my first chance to listen to it today. Again I really like your songs. I cant wait to hear more.

The quality is great. Im not really into bluegrass, but a friend of mine is. while i was @ his house yesterday, i brought up the Mama Corn myspace page. I knew he liked that kind of music, so i thought id try to get him into some of the local stuff. he loved you guys. He wanted me to ask where he could get a cd. he plays bluegrass himself. i guess him and a couple of guys jam every week in everett.
anyway, I just thought id tell you that cool shit, John. Keep on doing what youre doing!

The quality is pretty much Bill Filer's doing. It's a great studio, so laid back, and easy. The overall mix is funny... we took the disc home to live with it, and were considering major remixing, especially the bass guitar, which was almost nonexistent on our mix... but once uploaded to Myspace, it's right where I would want it's level to be. One of those odd happy coincidences, I guess.
Thanks to all for the kind words. Obviously, I posted seeking validation, which I try not to do here so you all don't think I'm too pathetic, and your compliments are awesome, but the coolest thing of all is that you guys seem to be playing it for someone else, and that's the ultimate compliment to me. We've put a great deal of effort into our music, and that's the payoff. I sincerely thank you all. ------>JMS
