Computer based recording clinic...

Post by Team Transylvania »

Recently, i have spoken to a few people about computer based audio recording. A couple knew how to do it, and a couple didnt. Recording audio on a computer is an amazingly fun thing to do. I know several people on here do it. Alot of people really want to learn HOW to get started with recording on a PC. I started thinking about how cool it would be to get a few of the Computer based recording guys (myself included  ) and having a 1 day or 2 day intro to computer based recording clinic. I think a ton of people would benefit from something like that. The avg person would learn how to record his or her music very easily. Not to mention, the people who know allready know how to can discuss techniques. I think every band or musician should learn to record themselves. not only does it prepare you for if you still want to go into a studio, it will help you capture those ideas FAST!! I have just as much fun recording as i do playing and writing music. Forget spending $100's of dollars on a hardware digital recorder. You can use the freely available software and use your computer as the recorder. Simple to make a cd of your idea too.
Anyway, the clinic would cover stuff like: Different types of setups, specific components in a computer based setup, How to set your inputs and outputs, Avoiding latency, Plugins, Audio recording and editing, Midi recording and editing, Mixing, Burning the cd or making mp3s and Troubleshooting.

It'll even help the guy trying to find band members. He will be able to post his riffs or song ideas online for people to hear.

haha, I guess it would almost have to be a 2 day thing. If theres any interest, I think it should be done. If anyone would be interested in learning, post here or pm. If any of the Computer recording guys have any ideas or want to be a part of this, Post or PM.

Great idea, TT! Sign me up to help and/or learn. Let's talk about reamping! Reamping is the bestest thing ever.

We could do Rockpage Homebrew project, where a bunch of us contribute a home-recorded tune each. That'd be a great learning project for novice or intermediate home studio people, and a chance to help each other along. Who's up for that challenge?

Something tells me drums will be a huge topic for the clinic! It's a huge step from having a home project studio to being able to properly record a full kit. So "what to do about drums" is a dilemma for most everybody.

This sounds like a great idea to me. I've been wanting to finish some of my songs and put them in digi form, so I think this will be very beneficial to me.

When and where is this taking place?

I am a computer science professor at UPJ (yeah we have a branch campus in Oakland).

I manage a lab with about 12 computers in it that I can install anything I like. There are additional laptops and 1 macbook pro.
There is a projector, screen, white board.

Now... I actually own a license to:
Sony Vegas 6
Cubase 4
Sonar 6
Finale 2006
Band In a Box 12
Garritan orchestra libras
Garritan jazz

Also have an Alesis HD24 24-track recorder
korg sound modules
midiman 4x4

However, I can't install a bunch of illegitmate sw. But one way to do it would be to install trial versions for the get together.

I love Cubase, and really wanna get Cubase 4. You use the Academic version, right? Theres a deal going on right now, that if you buy something that comes with crappy cubase LE, you can upgrade to Cubase Studio 4 for only $200!!!
I think im gonna but a 100$ interface and take advantage of that deal, and then sell the interface and just get Cubase Studio 4 for $200.

I'll definitely be there. You'll have to let me know what day and time so that I can schedule around work and play.
This sounds like alot of fun to me, cause I don't know squat about digi recording at all.

I like it, dude.
What Software and hardware are you using?

To all who asked about the date of the Clinic:
I want it to be in a month or so. I want this thing to be planned out well, so i wanted to take my time. So far, Matt from Heartless Mockery Records has offered his services to help with it. Im pretty excited about that, i know ill learn alot from him!! Anyway, ive been typing up ideas, and things to cover. Id like to have one more person to help teach/direct this thing. Floodcitybrass, are you interested?

I have to figure out where we can hold this, and how much its gonna cost me.
Then a date will be set. Thanks to everyone who has shown interest in this thing!

Like I said, I can probabably get a lab setting with about 12 machines with a projector. I can teach some sony vegas stuff. I have lots of raw multitrack recordings that we can use for lessons.
PM me and will chat.
