Lion's Den

Post by RLeahey14 »

I've been hearing rumors that the Lion's Den in Juniata is going to be closed down because of a new highway being built through there.

Does anyone know if there is any truth to this, and if so, when is it going to be closed and are they going to hold shows up until the highway is built?

From what i understand, Patty (the owner) is leasing the building to someone else until the state puts the highway through. They still hold shows there, its currently called "The Lost & Found". the website is

Somebody told me that the person running the venue has put in a house sound & lighting system.

I haven't heard anything lately about it. For years, the word has been that the eventual Chestnut Avenue corridor would be expanded through Juniata and out to the Pinecroft interchange of I-99. If that happens, it might take the Lion's Den and Aldo's, but that's probably still years away if ever.

Alright, cool, yeah I was hoping it would still be around for a while... didn't know about the name change but hopefully I'll be able to play a few more shows there.

I saw Fedup/Lies Inc./The Grimm there, and while there were plenty of speakers for full FOH support, only the vocals and kick drum were going through the PA. I don't know if it was a an issue with noise ordiances (it wouldn't fall under the dreaded PLCB jursidiction because no alcohol is served there) or if there was another reason for the sparse reinforcement. I would have really liked to have heard the bass, guitar, and full drum kit roaring through the house system though.

I though EVERYTHING was supposed to go through the PA, isnt that why they are charging $150 to play there?!?!!? (which is dumb anyway!!!)

Id like to hear it all too, but its a 100% improvement over how it was there. Ron has done a real nice job with the place.

Now you know why I couldn't pay you guys much when I had you in with my band last year.

Well, actually, Patty took half of what we all pulled in. And I refuse to charge more than $5 a head for an Altoona punk gig. That is just retarded.

Im talking about the new situation there.
Before the new management, the woman who owned it DID take HALF of what the door made. Its tough to make much $$ there with alot of bands. Instead of taking from the door, i believe the new owner requires $150 up front. there was a post about it on RP a month ago or so.
Personally, i dont think a mic'd kick and vocals are worth $150. I havent been there since the change, so i have no clue what it looks like inside now. If it is going to STAY a place to play for awhile, something should be done to the outside.

Again, I really don't know why the PA was run that way when I was there, so I really can't be critical of that situation. There looked to be at least a couple thousand watts worth of power amps sitting in the racks. Of course, the mix was as good as the guitarist(s) and bass player could run their amps from the stage area. Steve let Dax and Otto run their combo amps through one of his HM cabs, so they were at least pushing enough air to fill the room.

I agree that $150 is way too much for just vocals and kick drum, but I assume that the price also includes rent of the building. From a business standpoint, I think that $150 is better than half the door. I'd rather pay $150 up front and make $500 at the door than not pay anything and split half of the $500. Of course, that's all contingent on if you can make $500 at the door. Is that possible? I don't know. The all-age scene isn't my scene, so I don't pretend to know a lot about it. Though, I do know that if you expect to make a lot of money at it, whether you're a musician or a promoter, then you're probably in the wrong scene. With that said, I've been in situations where I've spent more than $150 in production for door gigs and then made enough money that night to put a few gallons of gas in my car and buy an MTO on the way home.

They'll do it either way. $150 or 50/50 door take.
So if you're playing a show to your girlfriend and the other bands. I'd take the 50/50 option. He does have overhead that needs to be taken care of.
Lights/rent/insurance etc. Not gonna pay that by selling candy bars and charging 25 dollars to run sound. When we rented a pa (vocals only) for the place when patty had it it cost about a hundred to rent the pa plus we payed her half of the door take. Do the math, or better yet go play for drunks who are prolly only there for the drunk skanky pussy not YOUR music and leave the place alone. I'm sure it's doing fine without you. Did you ever go to shows when you were a kid? I mean DIY shows, not fucking slipknot at the BJC. They were the greatest thing to me growing up. That's what made me want to be in a band. BTW, if any of you guys will run total sound for 5 or 6 bands and let me use your garage to have a punk rock show for like 50 bucks pm me, we'll hook it up. Til then keep bitching, it always solves everything. P.S. don't give me the shit about how when you were a kid you did shows for 50 bucks , because I walked uphill to school and back in three feet of snow when a full tank of gas and a pack of lucky's were both a nickel too.

No one's fucking bitching. Atleast not me. Im not gonna tell anyone how to run their venue. I dont care. Nothing i said wasnt true.
Have you guys raking in the cash from @ lion's den??? NO.
Its a tough thing to do there unless you can actually get people to show up and stay. Only once have i see the parking lot full there, and none of the bands i knew were playing. very strange.
Some bands dont have the $150 to spend on playing somewhere. i know the sort of comments that ill get from that, but oh well. It kind of alienates bands to make them pay, but i can say i wasnt aware of the 50/50 option. the post i saw from a while back i just said $150 up front to play. it's all good in the proverbial 'hood.

ill be playing there in nov, and so it will be cool to see all the equipment thats set up @ 'the Lost & Found'. Hopefully they use the full PA. It'll be more than Gf's and the other bands for sure, cause you have to come, Brian! :)
I expect a very nice turnout.

Not many bands around here do it for the money. I like that alot of those bands. For the love of original music. YUMMY. 8)

Brian, maybe you need to go see my doctor. He always fixes me right up when I have a case of the Mondays. He prescribes this really cool medicine called Beanacile or something like that. The best part is that he doesn't care if you have insurance of not. He also has all of this cool, cutting edge medical technology, including this tubular thing with water in it. He says that it's a good way to ingest Beanacile. I don't have an MD, so I have to take his word on it.

TT,
When you see the parking lots full, it's because national acts are playing there. They get some pretty "big" underground acts there. Kids travel from Ohio and Pittsburgh to see shows there. When local bands play, local fans are what you draw. Not many local adults cuz you aint 'loud ta take yer bud light in air en drink. Plus nunna dem basterds'll play any Leonard Skinnerd. Flyer the shit out of the campuses and you should draw ok though. I'll be there for the Thanksgiving show.

I'll just go see Old Grandad. He usually has a cure for what ails me.
