guitar cab's

Post by nighthawk »

have any of you checked out the Basson guitar cabs yet. i recently got one and i am amazed how good it sounds. they spent a lot of time in the little details making it sound just a little better. i with out a doubt like it more than the marshall 1960 ive been using. its amazing how much of a difference guitar cabs make in the sound. i have 5 different guitar cabs and each one is voiced so differently i can go from a more classic sound to a really heavy sound just by changing cabs. i have the basson, marshall, and crate 4x12's and i have a fender bandmaster 2x12 and a fairly modified fender twin that the amp section was removed and now it is just used as a cab. out of everything the basson sounds so much better.

what do yall like to use?

Marshall 1960 of course!
LOL

I know what you mean by the cabs all being different. Seems like they were voiced for a particular style of music. Even by putting your speakers in another cab can change the sound.
Basson is a brand I'm not familiar with. Do they specialize in cabs only?

I haven't tried any Basson bass cabs, though some people that I talk to say that they are kind of muddy and don't have the note definition that some other modern cabinets have. Others have said that they do the "rock n' roll" thing really well. I always like to let my own ears decide, so I've been curious about actually trying one out to see if I like it. I'm more of an Eden/Aguilar/SWR (there I go name dropping!) type of guy, so I don't know if they'd be my thing. I know that they are quite heavy though.

Right now, I'm using two Aguilar S4x10 cabinets and I also have an Eden CX210. I dig the Ags, but I think that I'm eventually going with Eden enclosures as my main gigging cabs. Though I've never been a big Ampeg guy, I played through an SVT 8x10 reissue this past summer and really dug it. I've always been an advocate of using horns/coaxial speakers/high-frequency drivers to get the high-end definition out of bass cabs, but this cab definitely didn't need one. It had plenty of highs and they weren't harsh or nasally at all. So I've been keeping my eyes peeled for a used SVT 8x10. I have no idea how I would get it off of my porch or down my busted up sidewalk, but it would be cool as hell. :D

Paul, make your house handicap accessible, and get a Radio Flyer.

This is a cool topic, I'm wondering what other people are using also.
That would be really cool to have that many cabinets at your disposal.
So pretty much you can get almost any sound you want to then.

I also know of another trick that some people do to their cabs also.
They take the rear cover off and put caulk in the seams to seal it. It's supposed to give a much tighter sound. It makes sense to me. Has anyone tried this? I haven't gotten around to it yet.

Have 3 "60's" Vox Berkley II's. They have closed backs and I have one loaded with Celestion bass speakers for bass.

Here's a couple of them.

Those are freakin' sweet looking. You can't go wrong with Vox for that classic sound.

Mesa 4x12 Recto cabs loaded with Vintage 30s. Man I love these cabs. Really good full range, especially strong in the mids. The guy I bought these off of bought a couple Diezel cabs. Wow! Very tight and focused but at around $1000-$1200 a cab wayyyyyy out of my range. I have a pair of older Mesa 2x12 "split" cabs that are loaded with an EV 200 & a Vintage 30. These cabs are very tight but lack the mid range punch of the Recto cabs. I used to have a Marshall 1960 but it lacked the clarity & punch of the Mesa. Also the Marshall seemed to go "flat" once you reached a certain volume as where the Mesa would keep on crankin'. Don't know about caulking the back panel. I suppose on some cabinets it could make a difference. Those Diezel cabs are frickin' thick and built like a tank. There's where most of the tightness is coming from. Ha, ask Paul about my custom built "Messy Boogie" cab. I may have to build a run of those things ha, ha!

After doing a lot of research, I decided on this Mojotone 2-12 Bassman cabinet. Each speaker has its own closed back chamber and is rear-baffle mounted to squeeze out more bass. Its a steal at $215 for the basic version and for $25 more, you can select any style tolex and grill cloth. After much experimentation, I decided to load it with a pair of Celestion G12 Century speakers so it is as loud as a Marshall 4x12 loaded with V30s and only weighs 40lbs. (I can pick it up with my pinky). I don't recommend the Century G12 for a traditional tube amp, but with its "vanilla" voicing, it is the best speaker I could find for modeling systems.

What convinced me to try Mojotone was that Lexicon chose Mojotone to manufacture their guitar cabinets for their studio guitar amp. They have all kinds of cabs (and lots of other stuff):

Mostly combos here. I do have an Ampeg 2x12 with V30s for "bright and tight" and a Mesa 1x12 3/4 back for "fat and wide". Not unlike yo mama.

Man oh man, are those Vox's pretty.

I usually use either both of these or whichever I feel like that day.
