Bassists: What's your main axe?

Post by grimmbass »

Hey bruthas and sistas on the low end....what's your main bass and why? Mine is a beautiful mid-90's red Spector Euro, complete with EMGs and a Hipshot drop tuner. She is my baby and I dig her thunderous power, crisp highs, and amazing ability to cut through a mix.

Here we are getting it on at good ol' Peter C's:

-(estimated) 2000 Carvin LB75.
-Alder body
-Five-piece neck (maple/koa/maple/koa/maple)
-J99 pickups
-Currently strung with DR Black Beauties. I love Dean Markley Blue Steels, but it was just getting too expensive switching them out every five or six gigs how I like to.

I love this bass to death and would probably literally cry if anything ever happened to it.

After jamming on Kent's new Streamer the other night, I've decided to do it: I'm planning on getting a Warwick.

...Now does anyone have a Dolphin Pro they'd like to get rid of for less than $2k? :D

Oh yeh......showin' some bass love. These are sort of crappy pictures and I'm not in the pictures because that wouldn't be good anyways but:

My main bass lately is a 2002 American Fender Jazz Deluxe V. I still prefer a 34" scale bass and the B string on this one doesn't suffer too much for not being a 35" scale. I started playing on a '78 Fender Jazz and my current style of music sort of fits a Fender sound. The Hipshot string retainers increase the tension of the B and the E slightly.

The 'occasional' bass which I use for a modern cutting tone is this late 90's Spector NS5 CRFM. It's still a 34" scale unlike the newer Euro Spectors. I'm still getting used to it's modern tone and action. It's very different from the Fenders I've become used to.

My main bass is a 1983 (1st year issue) Steinberger with 2 EMG pickups.

I also own a 1975 4001 stereo Rickenbacker and a 1971 3/4 neck Epiphone.

LOL...I guess I was channeling Rudy Sarzo in that pic. :)

Seriously though, I have been considering either a Schecter or Ibanez for my next bass, because of their thinner necks. Any suggestions from you bass players out there on what would be a good quality bass, yet having a thinner neck, would be greatly appreciated!

Not sure, I had some wood in the foreground that I had to tend to. LOL!

No doubt, I was hoping that trend did not catch on with the dudes on here.
I was gonna take a pose with my Jackson, but I declined, because I didn't think you guys would appreciate that.

Hey Kimi!

Most of the Schecter stuff is great. I owned one and sold it (My mistake  ). You are correct that they have the thinner necks and many have the EMG electronics. They'd be perfect for you.

On the left is my Yamaha BBG4S 2. Plays incredibly well and has a very wide tonal range. I think Yamahas are about the most underrated basses on the market.
On the right is my '98 American P. It's been upgraded with a Seymour Duncan Quarter Pounder and a very heavy Fender solid brass bridge. I also added the black mirror pickguard.

Okay, so I don't actually play the bass any more but I did up to a couple of years ago...and I figured it wouldn't be cheating too much to post a few pics

Just your basic SquierII P-Bass...nothing too special about it, but its got a good sound and some crazy action going on

Built this last year. Got a "60's"Vox neck off e-bay and made the rest. Due to arthritis I wanted to try a short scale and I was getting nervous gigging out with my 73 Rick so I put it on pension.[/img]

Bass licking is one of those things that everyone knows about, but nobody talks about (kind of like cock fighting). A few years ago, down on my luck and desperate for cash, I appeared in an "adult" film called "Men Who Lick Their Own Basses, Volume 3". The following snapshot is the only photo I could dare post in a "family friendly" forum:

Image

I'm truly glad that I was able to get my life together and to put the shameful days of bass licking behind me. I know, ladies, it's really hot to see a guy lick his own bass, but this is a path of shame and self-destruction. If you have a friend or a loved one who is a bass licker, seek professional help.

This is my main bass. It was stolen and I got it back, so it will never go anywhere.
