it's always interesting what a band will do on the cusp of big popularity; you can see the momentum they're building and they can see the crack of light to slip into the mainstream- but will they go? some of my favorite cd's came when bands could have laid down or dumbed up their sound but didn't. pantera were in the same place as metallica when justice for all got them on the brink of major exposure after vulgar display; instead they put out far beyond driven. skid row puts out the badass slave to the grind instead of a wimpy glam record...
pantera goes brutal with far beyond driven instead of trying to write walk again and again...
danzig puts out how the gods kill, a weird and dark cd rather than the AC-DC driven rock stuff he's known and popular for...
faith no more goes over the deep end with the disturbing and amazing angel dust...
those are some of my faves of all time and could have easily never happened if they would have went the more commercial route...

Re: 25 Metal bands
SLAYER has NEVER made a shitty album. You would be hard pressed to find a Slayer fan that would argue. Just change that to most bands have made a shitty album. And I would agree.metalchurch wrote:Every band has a shitty album, EVERYONE.

25 Metal Bands
I hold Slayer in high regard, they are one of my all time fav's, right up there w/ Sabbath, Priest, and Maiden.
I didn't really care for that cover album they put out called 'Undisputed Attitude' probably because I don't like or listen to punk music.
The last album 'God Hates Us All' it just sounded muddy and sludgy to me. Their style and riffs just do not sound right tuned down. Christ Illusion is a killer album, some songs are in Eb, and some are in C#. You can tell right away which ones are in Eb, it is just classic Slayer!
There are very few bands that I like every album of theirs including Deicide, the original Sepultura, Six Feet Under, Goo Goo Dolls, Blind Melon, etc...
It's all in the eye of the beholder.

if I ever got signed keep your eyes open for me on the cover of Bass Player magazine taking a big old bite out of a subway sandwich and washing it down with ice cold Coca Cola.
I'd be a complete advertising whore, and there would be no question wether I sold out or not.

Stand back, I like to rock out.
