HOMEGROWN ROCKER 9/14/14

Post by Jim Price »

Hello Everyone,

Here is the recap of the September 14 edition of Rocky 104.9 and Rocky 99's weekly local music program, "The Homegrown Rocker," which airs every Sunday night from 9 to 11 PM on WRKY-FM (www.rocky1049.com) and WRKW-FM (www.rocky99.com). The show can also be streamed via either Rocky website, www.rocky1049.com or www.rocky99.com.

Although no guests were scheduled for this week’s program, it didn’t mean this week’s show wasn’t busy! We emptied the mailboxes to check out some new local and regional releases that arrived recently; debuting new songs from Jason McIntyre & Junior Tutwiler, Easy Tiger, Striped Maple Hollow, Tim Woods, Neon Swing X-perience, Post Traumatik and The Lux Republic! We also stepped “Across State Lines” to interview Zach Gabbert, bassist for Cincinnati-based rockers Buffalo Killers, who are coming to McGarvey’s in Altoona on Sept. 19! We updated “Local Music News,” and remembered area guitarist Darryl Carter (who passed earlier this month) by featuring a live performance with Darryl as part of Anthony Stauffer & Holy Smoke from 2005 for this week’s “Local Music Flashback!” And we reviewed not one, but two CD’s in this week’s “Professor’s CD Corner,” reviewing Womb I and Womb II by The Anti Corn League during the show’s first and second hours respectively. After this busy week, the show host needs a two week break!

Here is this week's playlist:

HOUR ONE:

MATT OTIS & THE SOUND – “Take Me Home”
RON GALLUCCI – “Feels Good”
JASON McINTYRE & JUNIOR TUTWILER – “Storms & Gasoline”
TONY JANFLONE, JR. – “Crocodile Tears” (live)
EASY TIGER – “Alter-Native”
BUFFALO KILLERS – “Let It Ride” (Across State Lines)
STRIPED MAPLE HOLLOW – “My Place in the Sun”
ANTI CORN LEAGUE – “The Dark Knot”

HOUR TWO:

LEGENDARY HUCKLEBUCKS – “Honky Tonk Angel”
TIM WOODS – “Castle Rock Boogie”
NEON SWING X-PERIENCE – “Speakeasy”
ANTHONY STAUFFER & THE HOLY SMOKE – “No Mojo” (live) (2005, Local Music Flashback)
POST TRAUMATIK – “Misery”
NAILDRIVER – “Phoenix”
THE LUX REPUBLIC – “Porcelain”
ANTI CORN LEAGUE – “Dr. Zaius the Great Ape”
LUKE PFISTER – “Bad Girls”
CHRIS RATTIE – “So Long”

Next week…nothing. The “Homegrown Rocker” gets pre-empted by the Pittsburgh Steelers, as the Black and Gold play a Sunday night game against the Carolina Panthers. The show returns the following Sunday night, September 28, when our guests will be Cambria County indie rockers The Anti Corn League! We’ll meet the band members and learn their story, and hear more music from their dual albums Womb I and Womb II! We’ll also update “Local Music News,” dig a song by a past area band from the archive for a “Local Music Flashback,” and review Michi’s Castles in the Air CD in “The Professor’s CD Corner!”

Upcoming guests and specials include:

OCT. 5 – BORROWED TIME
OCT. 12 – XS FOR EYES
OCT. 19 – STAGE HANDS
NOV. 2 – (NO SHOW DUE TO STEELERS FOOTBALL)
NOV. 9 – ADAM ERNST
NOV. 16 – JASON McINTYRE & JUNIOR TUTWILER

In Local Music News…

Altoona’s The Big Time will celebrate the release of their new CD, Imaginary Hearts, with a special show at the Archway Center in Altoona on Saturday night. The show, presented by AnEmergencyScene, starts at 5 p.m. and will feature The Big Time, Pittsburgh’s Paper States, Maryland’s Common Wealth and State College’s Relic Hearts, along with area performers Stevie Moses and Emily Hall. The Big Time recorded their new disc over the summer in Atlanta.

Two all-ages music venues are opening their doors. One is reopening its doors after some time away; The Noteworthy in downtown Bedford is back up and running, and will feature an all-ages bill on Saturday the 20th featuring Tommy Fix, Brimstone, Paradigm, and Lythem. And a new Altoona area all-ages venue, The Empire, features its first all-ages bill on Monday evening, September 15 with the bands Suffokate, The Imposter, Colossus, Dark Sermon, Blood of the Martyrs. That show starts at 6:30 p.m.

The area music scene mourned the loss of another friend and valued member this past week with the passing of Allan Robison on Friday, Sept. 5th at age 71 after a lengthy illness. Allan was director of the Blair County Community Action Agency for many years, and was the organizer (and often emcee) of the Agency's summer concerts at downtown Altoona's Heritage Plaza. He often ran sound for many of those concerts. Allan was also a drummer and singer with numerous bands over the years, including J.D. and the Impressions, Fire and Rain, Prime Time, Big Mac and the Fries and more. We at the “Homegrown Rocker” extend our heartfelt condolences to Allan's family and friends.

And renowned Pittsburgh guitar great Tony Janflone, Jr. has had to cancel a number of his appearances as he recovers from an injury suffered during a recent incident at a Pittsburgh area venue. The incident occurred on August 24 when a patron allegedly grabbed Tony from behind in a chokehold following the conclusion of his performance, causing a windpipe injury. We at the “Homegrown Rocker” wish Tony a speedy recovery.
